The book is about the Liverpool *vibe* more than truly chronicling any one happening or person, so it's a bit difficult to pick out a quote, because the subject at hand jumps around, and the feel can be sparse but complete. Some of the whe words regarding Pete's death especially touched me: As Pete's partner in the rhythm section, Les the bassist felt a special desolation: 'It was like we were into another language together . . . We named my little lad Louis, after Pete's middle name.' (Despite the inter-group rivalry, Julian Cope was always close to Pete, whom he describes as 'peaceful in his head'. For Julian, 'Pete De Freitas dying was an enormous thing. He was a fantastic inspiration because he was just so out there. He was much more out there than me. I was just fucked up on drugs.') Les: 'I still think of him. I still think of him almost every day. The longer you live, the more people die around you, and you can't describe it to anyone. Heaven is a place in people's heads. I'm always thinkng of Pete, so that's my heaven for him. When Pete died I had this image of him at the funeral, that he was bouncing from every star, like a satellite, from Australia and back.' The chapter's called 'The Sky All Hung With Jewels.' - --Amy ====================================== Choices! mailto:majordomo@smoe.org Subscribe/unsubscribe Seven-seas Seven-seas-moderated Both available in digest form. ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Oct 2002 01:35:40 -0500 (CDT) From: amyr@jump.net (Amy Moseley Rupp) Subject: seven-seas-moderated what did I listen to just before I discovered the Bunnymea? After a long-time Austinite wrote me off list about the History of R&R class at our Big State University here, and I recovered from the shock of realising I've been shooting off my mouth in the presence of someone from our rather small corner of the world, I looked about a bit for my class notes, cos some of my college stuff is down from the roof cos of the shuffle. I didn't find *them*, but I did find my first semester Calculus folder, and was horrified by what I'd written on the back of it, in sorority girl silver paint pen: Rush Triumph Judas Priest Iron Maiden Quiet Riot Ozzy Rainbow Black Sabbath ZZ Top Motley Crue Billy Squier Def Leppard The Police The Who Saga .38 Special Cheap Trick Kiss Fastway Saxon Scorpions Lynyrd Skynyrd The Beatles Dio Queensryche AC/DC Talking Heads Led Zeppelin Axe Aerosmith Blue Oyster Cult Styx Boston Eagles Jefferson Starship Sammy Hagar Elvis Costello Bow Wow Wow Adam and the Ants Fleetwood Mac Phil Collins Toto Van Halen Journey Foreigner On that list are a few still-deserving bands but oh my God am I glad I met the guy who'd switch that list to Echo Siouxsie New Order Smiths Bauhaus Japan Cure Cocteau Twins This Mortal Coil Joy Division and so on, just the very next semester. - --Amy, hanging head in shame (Def Leppard? I loved that class. One of my favorite memories is when we were listening to 'Stairway to Heaven,' with the lights out, and the professor jumping up and yelling "It's 2 minutes in, and it's STILL JUST ACOUSTIC GUITAR AND VOCALS!!!!" I also got to help teach the course, especially during the 80's and 90's segments. However, unlike Amy, I had already been exposed to the grandeur that is the Bunnymen, and wrote my term paper on, if I can remember the exact title, 'Liverpool, Eric's Place and the Bunnymen.' Started with a chapter on the Beatles and Merseybeat, and then a couple more on the late 70's and early 80's. Among my sources were the book 'Never Stop' and interviews with Julian Cope, Mac, and Will and Les. And I'll be damned if I can find it... was looking for it over the weekend. I was listening to Dick Clark being interviewed the other day and he said when his wife heard Chubby Checker for the first time she said something like "he reminds me of a little Fats Domino - a chubby checker" and hence the name. I thought that was sortta cute.
