Perhaps Mr. Ferry's > is the definitive version as that's obviously how I remember the > track. Gotta disagree.... this is about a deeply wounded guy making a confession that's hard to make.... and Ferry does all sorts of vocalised stylings all over it, when it's a plea, a cry, a whimper from the heart ... a whispered confession in a strained voice, an admission of a failure and insecurity. Lou Reed just murders it. Maybe it has a lot to do with what the song touches personally in the listener... but I was dreaming of the past And my heart was beating fast I began to lose control I began to lose control I was feeling insecure You might not love me any more I was shivering inside I was shivering inside I was tryin' to catch your eyes Thought that you was tryin' to hide I was swallowing my pain I was swallowing my pain I didn't mean to hurt you.... I'm sorry that I made you cry.... Oh well, I didn't want to hurt you.... ====================================== Choices! mailto:majordomo@smoe.org Subscribe/unsubscribe Seven-seas Seven-seas-moderated Both available in digest form. ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Oct 2002 16:29:28 -0500 (CDT) From: amyr@jump.net (Amy Moseley Rupp) Subject: seven-seas-moderated Jealous Guy Orchestration Barry's entry finally propagated itself to the US and I'm downloading it now with great bandwidth considering how far it has to come .... (too bad we can't download *people*, sigh) .... I had to d/l the John Lennon version (couldn't be arsed to go get it from the CD collection in the other room ) ;-) and gave it a listen. The orchestration wouldn't be all that expensive to reproduce -- I sing in concerts where we have to hire the instrumentalists and know exactly what they get paid. Besides the standard bass-guitar-drums set up (definitely acoustic guitar, dunno about electric, but the bass is electric, don't hear a string bass) there's a piano soloist, and maybe ten violinists -- can hear whether viola but don't think cello. No winds. The strings are used to best effect IMHO when they are backing, such as in the intro, and I'm not fond of the Robert Plant "Sea Of Love"-style sighing in the latter part of the song. Trouble is... I'm given to believe that the Uncut CDs are meant to be sort of fun, one-off interpretations -- not studio-quality work, but interesting, nonetheless. It'd be easier and cheaper to do a thrash metal version of the song than to truly try to claim it as one's own. I don't think Mac is in the mindset of fun "I'll try anything once and use different vocal styles" that he was in, say, on _Heaven Up Here_ and _Ocean Rain_. Dare I say that he's become more predictable? which isn't necessarily bad in itself. - --Amy, going to see my brother in _Carmina Burana_ tonight and feeling like that damned lacrimose duck ====================================== Choices! mailto:majordomo@smoe.org Subscribe/unsubscribe Seven-seas Seven-seas-moderated Both available in digest form. ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Oct 2002 00:58:01 +0100 From: "Barry Whiting" Subject: seven-seas-moderated Don't tell Florida... ...Q magazine is taking votes for the best album's of all time : http://promo.q4music.com/q4music/top10albums/ I hate lists....but some Bunnymen publicity would be good wouldn't it? - -- Barry - -- Barry Whiting barry@urquell.freeserve.co.uk ====================================== Choices! mailto:majordomo@smoe.org Subscribe/unsubscribe Seven-seas Seven-seas-moderated Both available in digest form. ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Oct 2002 22:14:24 +0000 From: "Peter Burnand" Subject: seven-seas-moderated mac on room 101? Just seen John Peel on Room 101. Some amusing choices; 'driving through Essex', 'shopping', 'beards', 'defenders shielding the ball to get a goal kick' and 'death'. He wasn't allowed 'shopping' unless he donned an Everton shirt which, suprisingly, he did. What a dude. Mac on Room 101 would be interesting. Wonder if Paul Weller would be a choice. - --- What's the difference between Margaret Thatcher and Edwina Currey, One f****d the minors the other f****d the majors. _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ====================================== Choices! mailto:majordomo@smoe.org Subscribe/unsubscribe Seven-seas Seven-seas-moderated Both available in digest form. ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Oct 2002 20:08:45 -0700 From: Kathleen Sprague Subject: seven-seas-moderated Re: seven-seas-digest OT the Doves I just had to thank those of you who gave me their two cents about the Doves. I saw them perform the other night and loved their show. Very cool video and lights to accompany their amazing music. I was exhausted yesterday, but hearing "caught by the river" and "there goes the fear" live made it all worth while. Their music and lights lifted my spirit, and for a brief moment in time, we flew as one. It was AWESOME.... If they're coming to your town, one word of advice....GO!!!!!
