When Oasis first came out I instantly thought 'this band is *trying* hard to sound like the Beatles.' The orchestration was there and to a degree a Lennon-esque voice.... but no particular song was a direct enough copy to warrant copyright infringement. OTOH, George Harrison lost a case because "My Sweet Lord' is a pretty direct ripoff of 'He's So Fine'. I always wonder how people manage to write new, fresh, good material when there's already so much *stuff* out there and only so much we can listen to. But then someone else will come along and do it, giving me hope. ;-) - --Amy ====================================== Choices! mailto:majordomo@smoe.org Subscribe/unsubscribe Seven-seas Seven-seas-moderated Both available in digest form. ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Oct 2002 18:41:08 +0100 From: "Noose Boy" Subject: seven-seas-moderated RE: seven-seas OT Moby It was the Astoria. Whilst I have been waiing I've listened to Bryan Ferry and Lou Reed's versions of the song...Lou Reed's is AWFUL. Bryan Ferry's is better, but he bloats it to over 6 minutes instead of the original four. Haven't been able to bring myself to listen to the verisons by Peter Criss (KISS), Berlinda Carlisle (Go-Gos), and Collective Soul, though the latter might be the best... too much on an empty stomach! I think the KISS principle would be best at doing this song.... Keep It Simple Stupid... Lennon's sparse but expressive voice and relatively low-key orchestrations are what make this song of naked need work for me. - --Amy ====================================== Choices! mailto:majordomo@smoe.org Subscribe/unsubscribe Seven-seas Seven-seas-moderated Both available in digest form. ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Oct 2002 21:36:35 +0100 From: "Barry Whiting" Subject: seven-seas-moderated Re: seven-seas jealous guy - ----- Original Message ----- From: "stevie g" > i have to agree - it's crap! > why does he bother singing songs that don't suit him? > stevie g. I'm not sure about the "singing songs that don't suit him", Steve ? I think if 'Jealous Guy' had have been an original Ian McCulloch composition, it could have quite happily tucked itself away on WAYGTDWYL seemlessly. The version on the Uncut CD isn't great, I'd have to agree but, personally, I feel it's the backing track that's lacking. Given that this was recorded exclusively for Uncut, I guess they couldn't have afforded to wheel in the 42-piece orchestra the track so richly deserves. And, you know, with that kind of backing, Mac would have nailed it perfectly. I've just dug out the John Lennon version, and I have to confess it sounds a lot less polished that I thought it did. Perhaps Mr. Ferry's is the definitive version as that's obviously how I remember the track. Shame Mac didn't attempt the whistling, though. - -- Barry. - -- Barry Whiting barry@urquell.freeserve.co.uk ====================================== Choices! mailto:majordomo@smoe.org Subscribe/unsubscribe Seven-seas Seven-seas-moderated Both available in digest form. ====================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V1 #132 ********************************
