Right -- just as I have Rush on vinyl, cassette, CD, and remaster... but it's my choice ;-) One example, and I am sorry if I've mentioned this before, is on the song "A Passage To Bangkok," which is a geographical ode to ganja. Mentions all the best places it's grown, etc. There's a bit of noise before the guitar solo.... well, until the remasters, it just sounded like cymbal work... but when I heard the remasters, I literally did LOLROTFL because there is the unmistakable sound of a young Geddy Lee sucking in a monster hit off an imaginary spliff. So then I was dubious -- had they overdubbed it? so I went back to cassette and listened carefully -- and it was there but almost indistiguishable from the cymbals, and certainly not noticeable. I *dunno* if the Bunnymen have anything on the First Four like that ;-) but.... sometimes the addition of one note, one sound... one intake of breath... can add to a song, and you can fall in love with it all over again. - --Amy ====================================== Choices! mailto:majordomo@smoe.org Subscribe/unsubscribe Seven-seas Seven-seas-moderated Both available in digest form. ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Sep 2002 18:39:52 -0700 From: "Ivan Smith" Subject: Re: seven-seas-moderated first four album remasters? I've seen written in numerous interviews that the Bunnymen weren't happy with the way both Crocodiles & Heaven Up Here were mixed. I'd bet you couldn't have gotten Ian, Will, Les and Pete to agree on one mix of any given album as "perfect." A *remaster* is completely subjective -- that is, you're not changing a thing that was originally recorded, you are only adjusting relative volumes, equalisation, etc. I *suppose* a track could be deleted, but I bet it's rarely done -- and certainly *adding* anything would be cheating. If you prefer the current mastering of HUH, and think it perfect, then you have nothing to lose by having it re-mastered.... unless the remastered copy removes the original from sale -- so make a few backup copies ;-) I'm intrigued by the idea of having people *remix* some of the songs... now *that* would be interesting, because there very often things are added to the original, and combining early-to-mid 80s music with sounds from today would be interesting. Most of the time I'm a purist like you: I detest the re*mixed* version... but *occasionally* I'll like it. Same goes for covers. Speaking of tracks: does anyone know how many tracks the different albums used? Now that would be a good trivia question! - --Amy (ranking the first four): _Ocean Rain_ _Heaven Up Here_ (boy am I gonna catch it for that) _Crocodiles_ _Porcupine_ ====================================== Choices! mailto:majordomo@smoe.org Subscribe/unsubscribe Seven-seas Seven-seas-moderated Both available in digest form. ====================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V1 #85 *******************************
