In part that=92s down to Ian McCulloch=92s sterling work, = drinking in Coldplay=92s studio and lending Chris Martin his big coat. = The clear Bunnymen inflections on some of this year=92s best albums - = including A Rush Of Blood To The Head and The Coral - are another, more = important factor.=20 =20 Hollywood=92s got in on the act too. One of Ocean Rain=92s = highlights, The Killing Moon, provides the theme for one of the best = films of the year, Donnie Darko. It sets the atmosphere perfectly - = conjuring up Autumnal angst and a general sense of unease. =20 That=92s the mood throughout Ocean Rain - and it=92s what = makes it the definitive Bunnymen album. The arrangements are beautifully = thought-out. Tracks like Silver and Crystal Days make fine use of = spartan string sections - a far cry from the kitchen sink orchestration = of the Brit Pop era. Guitarist Will Sergeant makes every sparing note = count, and McCulloch has never been in better vocal - or lyrical - form. =20 But if Ocean Rain belongs to anyone, it=92s drummer Pete De = Freitas. At a time when stadium rock was starting to take a grip and = skyscraper-sized snares were the norm, De Freitas restricts himself to = subtle, jazzy brush-work. It lifts the album away from any danger of = bombast, and means Ocean Rain=92s reputation as a classic will continue = to grow long after the monstrosities of the 80s have been forgotten. =20 [demime 0.97c removed an attachment of type image/gif] ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Dec 2002 14:22:04 -0500 From: "tony schinella" Subject: seven-seas-moderated Re: seven-seas Ocean Rain - Album of the Day BBC 6 Music Agreed. Y'all already read my ode to "Ocean Rain" but every time I hear that song *I* feel like making love.
