It was good to see Queens of the Stone Age on TOTP.... ....but how in the heck did Shania Twain crawl back onto *any* chart? Thought I have to say, MOST of the acts seemed to be sexpot-oriented..... Donnii Minogue? Gotta be related to Kylie. - --Amy (forced to watch TV at 12.30 am by ill child) ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 10:58:41 +0000 From: "Peter Tebbutt" Subject: seven-seas-moderated Re: seven-seas OT: QOTSA on TOTP Not very cool in these parts to own up to this but... Shania gets loads of airplay on BBC's 'Radio 2' both on the 'popular' breakfast and drive time shows and any number of 'country' oriented shows - as indeed do many of those MOR countryish singer songwriter gals. And as the demograph of this particular station is far wider than that of the yoof stations its no big surprise to see her doing well, and fair play I say. In fact (and this is an even more dodgy admission) I went clubbing to one of oxford's top nightspots last weekend and they were playing shania in there, cracking night. I think we all could get out more! ;-) We did the "Shania is a fake" thing over here a long time ago.... so long I don't remember. Her husband is a bigshot somewhere in the music biz and she got the break -- nothing wrong with that; but I don't think she writes her own stuff. Does that matter? Hell, no, not if you're looking for entertainment. It's just I find CountryLite amusing coming from Canada, when I live in a place that churns out the stuff for cheap every night at the clubs and bars. Get Really Lost one night and wind up here, and I'll take you to the Broken Spoke and the Black Cat and and and and.... Course I'll admit *my* dodgy pleasure: it was my first time to see Westlife, and I think the blond one is (ahem) rather cute ;-) never liked a single boy band before, and I'm going to resist the temptation to download any music, cos the appeal was largely visual. If I can predict the lyric based on the rhyme (eg they sing strong and I know the next line is gonna end in belong) it kinda ruins it for me. But they were awful souful. - --Amy ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 14:52:28 -0000 From: matt.harkness@bt.com Subject: seven-seas-moderated OT A cautionary tale My employers have paid an American telecommunications consultancy to come over here and do a study of the barriers employees come up against in their day to day work. As a consequence, this last Monday I had a guy from Chicago following me around. Turns out he's a bit of a music fan, especially (he says) British music a la Radiohead, Coldplay, Badly Drawn Boy etc etc. I recommend a few other bands to him, stuff he hasn't heard OF, let alone heard, and I ask him to do the same. He says to me that, given the type of stuff I have said I like, I ought to try a guy called Pete Yorn. I duly downloaded an album of his (musicforthemorningafter), thinking that, if this guy likes Radiohead, Coldplay etc and reckons that this Yorn bloke is in a similar vein, then he might be quite good. WRONG! What a pile of crap. Yorn? Yawn, more like. If you ain't heard him, think Shania Twain but with a bloke's voice...... It was reported in the news here a while back that for the first time in decades the American Billboard Top 100 consisted of not one British artist. I'm not surprised if this is the crap you guys are listening to over there! ;-) ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 07:12:22 -0800 (PST) From: Andrew Ironside Subject: seven-seas-moderated Re: seven-seas OT: QOTSA on TOTP Shania Twain is mall oriented country, the kind of music where you just turn your brain off and suck up the mindless consumerage. Can you believe she was on the cover of last week's TV guide sporting a cut up Ramones shirt? I kid you not. After a hard night of line dancing, nothing like coming home to the three chord wonders of Joey, Dee Dee, Marky and Johnny, puhlease! I just feel sorry for Canadian artists with talent like Neko Case who have exist in this tainted pop landscpe. Yahoo! Mail Plus Powerful. Affordable.
