(I hate the expression "jam"--makes me think of The Grateful Dead and like-minded unwashed beard-growin' spliff-smokin' bad-taste purveyors.) But it's the sound of the word, the mantra coupled with the Burundi drums, that gives it that hypnotic, ghostly, mysterious vibe--"like going to your own funeral" is how I put it once--where words transcend representative "meaning" and the expression of vocal sound becomes an emotive vehicle. Like a scream, or example. Or an incredulous reader hollering "AAARrrrrggghhh!!!"
