From my own experience I can assure you that: Region-free players are usually found among the cheapest brands. In the US look for instance at Apex, or Sampo. I have a European version of the Apex 660 (around $ 150,-) which plays whatever I throw at it. Sometimes a little tweaking of the firmware is required but that is easy, and not a big risk considering the low price of the players. Your home-brewed DVD will not contain a region code unless you add one, so it will play on all players. Most DVD player do PAL - NTSC conversion or vice versa on the fly. Again, look at the cheapo's. All DVD players play VCD and most play SVCD. Again, the best chance is to be had with the made-in-China players. If converted (or "ripped") to VCD, which is MPEG1, Live in Liverpool would fit on a CDR (around 700 MB) If converted to SVCD, which is MPEG 2 at a higher resolution, Live in Liverpool would need 2 or 3 CDR. VCD quality equals a slightly worn VHS tape. SVCD is between VHS and DVD. The sound quality of both VCD and SVCD is the same, and incomparably better than VHS. Software to "rip" DVD's to VCD or SVCD can be found readily on the Web. Another option would be to convert the DVD to DivX, which, using the same space/compression factor as for VCD, would give you even better results. Divx, however, can only be played on a computer. I haven't perfected this technique yet, so I tend to watch it on my computer, but would like to be able to watch on the television. I would assume that such software would have to have an option to encode in a specific format for those of us with region-specific players. And I don't (yet) know the difference between a DVD and a VCD and whether my current player will play VCDs. Hmmmm.... I can tell I'm going to have to look into PAL-NTSC conversion and a region-independent DVD player. My kids will stare at the telly all day long if allowed but don't like me on the 'puter which is another reason to want it on the television. - --Amy ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Nov 2002 09:47:14 -0000 From: "Barry Whiting" Subject: seven-seas-moderated Re: seven-seas Re: your mail - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew Ironside" > Just thought of something, what does Zimbo mean > anyway? Better to invest in a videocard with TV-out and connect your PC to your TV. Better still to just buy the PAL dvd and play it on a cheapo DVD player.
