The Gunpowder gang were pissed off at the government and the monarchy (James I) for their intolerance towards Catholics and decided to blow up parliament - as you do. Several barrels of gunpowder in the bowls of the Houses of Parliament later, and some of the gang got some qualms of conscience about some of the `innocent' people who would be killed so news of the plan leaked and Guy Fawkes got caught in the cellars red-handed. I'm obviously precis-ing the plot here. So, Bonfire Night, great idea obviously. Opportunities to burn effigies of whomever you fancy and call it tradition. Not a celebration though, but a commemoration, and contrary to what you think, it's not a holiday either. Bang! Cheers, Caroline Amy Moseley Rupp wrote:Today is, as some of you know, Guy Fawkes Day, and most of us over here, if we've heard of it, have to really reach for WHY it's celebrated. I did retrieve 'he tried to blow up Parliament' from the dusty memory banks though I still have NO CLUE why that should be cause for fireworks and all. Someone on my tropical hibiscus mailing list, having a senior moment, earnestly asked: "Does anyone remember WHY Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament?" The answer from the single Brit on the list: "Because it was Bonfire Night." Thank you Caroline!!!! for explaining the 'plot' .... I think there is a bit of US/UK speak confusion going on here.... we call (at least in Texas!) every day that is celebrated for something a 'holiday' -- even if it is not a Holy Day or even if we don't get off work ;-) so some examples are celebrating famous people's birthdays like MLK or the birthdays of Presidents, or the zillion different multicultural holidays like Juneteenth, 19 June, when the Texas slaves found out that the Emancipation Proclamation had freed them. We don't have a term like 'bank holiday' or anything to indicate that most people get off work that day or the banks actually close -- there are "state" and "federal" holidays in which the banks and the government do close but often the rest of the working world does not get those same days off work! In general there is a trend towards 'freedom' to let employees choose which Holy Days they want off work, but to cut the number of days allowed per year. This is of course separate and apart from 'vacation' which is usually granted according to number of years worked and usually scheduled as a block of days off -- though again, not always. - --Amy (TMI) ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Nov 2002 12:59:17 -0700 From: "Kristin F. It's Pete's song....and besides that, it is absolutely mystical. > The Cutter > Ocean Rain > The Killing Moon The Yo-Yo Man -- this has a quirky, sometimes majestic sort of beauty which I think is very Bunny. Ship of Fools -- I think this deserves top marks all around: music, vocal, lyrics, imagery. I love the bit about the herald angels and the holy bells -- it's both funny and quite moving. >Nothing Lasts Forever > I Want To Be There I'll Fly Tonight -- strong both musically and lyrically. I like the undercutting in the lyrics. See the Horizon -- for me, this is one of their best works, right up there in the 9th sphere along with Ocean Rain. I love the imagery. > Fools Like Us > Get In The Car History Chimes -- I think this is a very fine piece of work -- in a quiet sort of way, I will admit. Buried Alive Flowers Burn For Me -- a powerful song which works on several levels. If a couple more songs were allowed, I'd fill in a blank space with Bombers Bay and All My Life -- two sides of the same coin and, imo, the best things on that album. This is my discourse for the week. I am going to go lie down for a while now. Am I taking this too seriously? ;-) Shaz - ----- Original Message ----- From: Amy Moseley Rupp To: Sent: Tuesday, November 05, 2002 7:20 AM Subject: RE: seven-seas bunnymen compilation > My advice? > > Make a 'hits' CD, or just borrow from STLAS and/or Ballyhoo and be > done with > that part.
