See...I never go for the 'hits' as much. At least when *I* make a compilationm for someone I don't. I give the essential hits that I like a lot... and I mix them with songs that do something for me! Make a 'hits' CD, or just borrow from STLAS and/or Ballyhoo and be done with that part. If this person has listened to a lot of alternative s/he will be somewhat familiar with that stuff anyway. I would focus on what I consider to be the strongest albums: HUH, Ocean Rain, and Evergreen, MHO, and leave out Ian's solo stuff and Efix -- for a separate CD, and because at least Evergreen has Les on it. That said, here's what I'd cut and leave on and why: People Are Strange (cut it: it's a cover) Rescue (probably heard it; on Great Hits stuff) Stars Are Stars Crocodiles The Puppet (probably heard it; on Great Hits stuff) All That Jazz Do It Clean (Greatest Hits) With A Hip (DEFINITELY) Heaven Up Here Over The Wall (not as strong as other tracks but) Show Of Strength The Cutter (probably heard it; on Great Hits stuff) The Back Of Love (probably heard it; on Great Hits stuff) Never Stop (probably heard it; on Great Hits stuff) Seven Seas (probably heard it; on Great Hits stuff) Ocean Rain (MUST HAVE -- isn't on any of the Greatest Hits stuff and is #1) Crystal Days (I like it but not enough to make it into the 20) Silver (probably heard it; on Great Hits stuff) My Kingdom (MUST HAVE) The Killing Moon (probably heard it; on Great Hits stuff) Lips Like Sugar (probably heard it; on Great Hits stuff) Bedbugs & Ballyhoo (only if the alternative mix on the BOTDH 12") All My Life (agreed -- strongest track on album; an alternative Lost And Found) Bring On The Dancing Horses (12" version -- yeah, it's longer, but it's the best) Nothing Lasts Forever (Yes, this deserved to be huge) I Want To Be There Just A Touch Away (second best on that album) Forgiven Too Young To Kneel Rust Fish Hook Girl (yes) What Are You Going To Do History Chimes (no) Fools Like Us Get In The Car Make Me Shine (yes, deserved to be a poppy hit) If I had to pick an Ian track: Candleland or Start Again; a Fixion track HAS to be Holy Grail. I'd have to do All My Colours/Zimbo -- it's just too good a song to leave off. Your other best approach is to just copy HUH, Ocean Rain, and Evergreen. That way you preserve the work in its entirety as it was originally done. The track sequencing on the first two is masterful, not that in these days of surfing CDs that counts as much. ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Nov 2002 01:26:43 -0600 (CST) From: amyr@jump.net (Amy Moseley Rupp) Subject: seven-seas-moderated Bunnymen "I'm Your Fan" Now that they have won the Inspiration award, can a big-name tribute album be too far behind? Coldplay have already contributed with "Lips Like Sugar" -- what would you see done and why? Which artists do you think have *really* been influenced by the Bunnymen? Which songs have been the most influential? "The Cutter" and "Never Stop" have been highly influential in terms of using classical instruments in innovative ways. And I don't hear a cello in a pop song without thinking of the entire _Ocean Rain_ album -- though of course the Beatles and "Eleanor Rigby" etc. So if Q did a CD tribute to the Bunnymen a la Uncut, and you were editor, who would you ask to do what? ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-moderated-digest V1 #29 *****************************************
