Why? In order to stimulate conversation about things related to the Bunnymen, rather than chatter about my typing the word "driver" rather than "diver". I'll be the first to stand up and say I'm thrilled at the recognition. I knew that something big was coming down the pike Sunday night when I received Pete's cryptic message, and was up dark & early to see what would be waiting in my inbox... I was hot on the trail of the story before 5:30am, and posted the Q graphic on the front page of Bunnymen.com at like 6:00.... I don't do stuff like that for events I which I think don't matter... McCulloch often dropped into the studio while Coldplay were making their last album, which the band partially recorded in the Bunnymans native Liverpool, and Martin has name checked the seminal 80s outfit many times since. Speaking to Xfm Online at the Q Awards (where his band picked up the 'Inspiration Award') McCulloch explained how he was especially proud of his young protigis, The thing that pleases me is that a band like Coldplay cite us so often as an influence, even though Chris [Martin] has only recently got into us. He enthused, And hes had no problem telling people about it. I just think hes a lovely guy, the whole band are great blokes. Now McCulloch has nearly completed his new as-yet-untitled solo record. The album is due to be released sometime in March next year and was co-produced by Cenzo Townsend (who worked on Echo & The Bunnymen's album Evergreen in 1997). As well as featuring other undisclosed guest musicians (one of who is rumoured to be Liam Gallagher) the record will also feature some musical input from the Coldplay singer. McCulloch revealed; He came over when I was doing my solo album, and played on two of the songs on a day when he could really have stayed in bed, and that pleases me more than the actual trophy. Theyre the best band in the world. I saw them last night and I nearly cried three times. The last time that happened was Neil Diamond few years ago - ---------------------------- The 2002 Q Inspiration Award was bestowed on Echo And The Bunnymen. The Award recognises acts that have inspired new generations of musicians, songs and music lovers in general. "Cheers," drawled Ian McCulloch. "Not before time, obviously." He gave special thanks to Coldplay for "getting us back on the map." From the Liverpool Echo: "Living up to his reputation as one of the coolest rock stars around, [Bunnymen] lead singer Ian McCulloch stayed true to his own unique sense of style. "I have it on good authority that he only got out of bed about a half hour before he was due to leave for the awards, and that he hadn't exactly pushed the boat fashion-wise. "Later he admitted: 'I'm wearing some old cords and a jacket... and probably yesterday's socks!" Echo and the Bunnymen are worthy winners as an act that has done much to promote the Mersey music scene, as well as providing inspiration for many of today's new bands. Previous winners of the Award include BB King, John Lydon, Brian Eno and David Bowie, Patti Smith, New Order and Joe Strummer. After the presentation, Q spoke to McCulloch: "Yeah, we just won this award. It's great to have, especially for a band that's, I think, generally only ever gotten three stars in Q. But that's down to individual journalists, I know that. "But, it's kind of vindication of what we always knew, Plus vindication for other people, you know. We always knew we were, I think, the best band in the world. "I mean now, who knows? I don't think it's a competition anymore. Because there are so many good bands who play it straight. Bands like Coldplay, Radiohead, even bands like The Hives, who I love, they're playing it straight, with a smile on their face... it's a different kind of... they're taking the piss out of something... Which is great, and they make great music. [The Coral are] another band who play it straight, but in a weird way. They're fantastic. I think they should've won "Best New Band" by a long way. They're mega. And it's not just 'cuz they're from Merseyside. I'm glad they are, 'cuz it makes me proud that, once again, a band's turned up like us who are just totally out on a limb. I think they're brilliant. "When we were growing up, in the 80's, there were a lot of, I think, charlatans. And we were fighting a battle to try and just do it the way we do it, and not kowtow to record companies or the mass market, you know." - ---------------------------- Sadly, we must report the loss of a member of the Bunnymen family. Dave Buchanan, 33, who was working on Will's upcoming Glide album, and had contributed to past Bunnymen & Electrafixion projects, died Saturday in an auto accident. Dave worked as a sound engineer and was for many years based at Parr Street studios. He had recently taken the decision to work on a free-lance basis, and a glowing future was predicted for him. A couple weeks ago, Will excitedly told me of Buchanan's involvement in the Glide album: "I have now drafted in the ingenious recording Engineer 'Dave Buchanan' (uncanny resemblance to Moby) who has worked on various Bunnymen and Electrafixtion projects, and we are now in the process of transferring all the sounds from my trusty 'Mac' to Dave's trusty 'Mac' as audio, to mix the finished work on Pro Tools. It has been working extremely well and the tunes sound great." Ian McCulloch said: "He was a great guy and we were all shocked. He'd been doing Will's solo album but we all knew him and thought really well of him. "He will be missed by everyone involved in the business." Pete Byrne added: "He was really talented and had a very bright future ahead of him. He was the kind of guy who always had a smile on his face." Annie Lewis, studio manager at Parr Street, said: "His passion was music. He worked with us from being very young and was totally committed to music. He learned his trade with us and was on his way to a really good career. "He was one of the nicest, kindest people you could wish to meet. None of us can quite believe what has happened." Dave's listing on allmusic speaks volumes about the scope of his work and his love of and dedication to music. His passing will certainly leave a hole in the industry, and in the hearts of those who knew him, and knew his work: Age Of Faith Still: Songs Of Restoration (1999) Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar, Mandolin Amorphis Elegy (1996) Assistant Engineer, Mixing Assistant Belly Gepetto [EP] (1992) Assistant Engineer Belly Feed the Tree (1993) Assistant Engineer Belly Baby Silvertooth (1993) Assistant Engineer Belly Gepetto [Remix Disc 2] (1993) Assistant Engineer Blackstar Barbed Wire Soul [US] (1998) Tambourine, Engineer, Cowbell The Boo Radleys Kingsize (1998) Assistant Engineer The Boo Radleys Free Huey [#1] (1998) Assistant Engineer, Mixing Assistant The Boo Radleys Free Huey [#2] (1998) Assistant Engineer, Mixing Assistant Ed Bruce This Old Hat (2002) Engineer Brutal Truth Need to Control (1994) Assistant Engineer Carcass Heartwork (1994) Assistant Engineer Die Krupps Final Remixes (1994) Engineer Electrafixion Burned (1995) Assistant Engineer Electrafixion Never [US] (1995) Engineer Electrafixion Lowdown (1995) Engineer Electrafixion Never Engineer Fudge Tunnel Complicated Futility of Ignorance (1994) Engineer Gorky's Zygotic Mynci Barafundle (1997) Assistant Engineer Holy Barbarians Cream (1996) Mixing Assistant Hurricane #1 Chain Reaction (1998) Assistant Engineer Inspiral Carpets Devil Hopping (1994) Assistant Molly Half Head Sulk (1994) Engineer New Model Army Love of Hopeless Causes (1993) Engineer Pale Saints Slow Buildings (1994) Assistant Engineer Reddog Standing in the Shadows (1989) Drums Scorpio Rising Pig Symphony (1992) Engineer, Assistant Engineer Space Spiders (1997) Assistant Engineer, Assistant Super Furry Animals Radiator (1997) Engineer Super Furry Animals International Language of...
