Ben played two shows in San Francisco (on Friday and Monday), and I went to both of them. They were both a lot of fun. Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy opened and was fabulous. This time it's just Ben on the piano, so he had the audience filling in on some of the harmony and instrumental parts -- on Army, Battle of Who Could Care Less, and Not the Same in particular. He tried to vary the setlists for the two shows, so last night he played some older stuff including an absolutely beautiful version of Alice Childress. On Friday night, Neil joined him on Mess with a guitar part and back-up vocals -- that was amazing. Last night, the lead singer of Cake came out and did harmonies on Fred Jones Part 2. He's thinking of doing a live album, so he taped Monday's show. He said he was particularly interested in getting Secret Life of Morgan Davis and One Down (3.6 to go) recorded last night. I hadn't heard either of those before Friday, but both of them crack me up. That and Girl. On Friday night, Summer Burke aka Summer B. aka the inspiration for Song for the Dumped was at the show, so Ben had the audience sing the song to her up in the balcony. He's doing the song in minor key now which is pretty funny. And then last night as part of his encore he broke out Brick telling a little story about how when it became a hit they didn't much play it live anymore except on TV shows. But then he saw a Radiohead show where Thom Yorke came out and said something along the lines of "We don't have a problem with the next song" and then sang Creep. "Well," said Ben, "I don't have a problem with this" and then sang a great version of Brick. Anyway, they were both fabulous nights.
