OK, so this isn't BFF related, but seein' as the boys have been relatively silent of late & everyone on this list is a music fan and prob'ly has some interest in the ongoing Napster debate, I thought perhaps there might be an interest in the following excerpt. Perhaps not, but I'm posting it anyway. Welcome to the world of music! >>The The's singular mastermind, Matt Johnson, has decided to make publicly >>known his dissatisfaction with his record label(Interscope) in particular >>for their botched handling of his latest release, NakedSelf, and with the >>record business in general by announcing that he will post and allow fans >>to download tracks off NakedSelf directly from the band's website for >>free. "This is not a decision I've taken lightly, becauseas some of you may know, I've been widely quoted in recent months regarding my opposition to Napster. As musicians and songwriters, as in other professions, we have dedicated our lives to our art and craft and now face a situation of people stealing our work and passing it around the world for free. No one who has ever donea hard days work for a days pay would expect others to work for free, why should musicians? It's also a sad fact of life that the general public are still fairly ignorant as to how unfair most record company contracts really are. The artist pays for everything yet owns nothing."<< Now, while I'm not a fan of The The per se and have no way of listening to the tracks on my computer at work, I'm downloading the tracks regardless to show my support for the cause. I suggest all true fans of music who wish to show their support of musicians rather than labels do the same. Watching VH-1's behind the music and a 20/20 story following the life of a young singer, I saw how rough the business can be. I applaud Marcus in his protest. I am a big fan of the the and also applaud their efforts to be heard. Working for free is concept I can't identify with. I wouldn't expect musicians to either. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Aug 2000 19:42:55 -0400 From: Spencer Corden Subject: Re: labels and $$-hungry labels I only get paid in Alpo and Leonard Cohen 8-tracks!
