Has anybody been to any concerts of any value over the past month? Any recommendations? We are hitting the road to catch out 2nd GUSTER show this Sunday. Josh Rouse is currently with them. Anybody heard of this guy? I have yet to buy anything, but I have listened to 3 songs on the net and would recommend him to the list. Last time we saw Guster, there was only like 200 people there, and I think there is someone on the list who was there also. The Pumpkins invade STL in a couple weeks. Ought to be crazy at the show, so I will be staying away. Here's a wierd thing. The Counting Crows are coming to my town, Springfield, IL. I am not a huge fan, but it is a coup for the convention center to get an act like that. Even Willie Nelson is making his Springfield return (He was a HUGE fixture in the past at our State Fairs). Bands currently tickling me: Angie Aparo Sheila Divine and that new release from Cypress Hill: Rock Star From the center of the country, over and out. _Erik_ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Mar 2000 10:54:03 -0500 From: Dan Cohen Subject: Re: anybody want to comment? I haven't been to any good concerts of note lately; this next month is going to see me catching BFF five times in the NY/PA area, Guster three times, two of which are opening slots on the BFF tour, and Flaming Lips/Looper in NYC should things pan out, which I hope they do. It's going to be exciting, although as a result of going to BFF/Guster in Albany on the 18th, I'll miss Handsome Boy Modeling School/Mix Master Mike/Rahzel in NYC, much to my chagrin. Guster is beginning to get crazy big here in the NE, to the point of selling out their Syracuse show in January and "Fa Fa" being #1 on the modern rock radio station's current hit list. If you follow the fan2fan at all, it's starting to get ugly, although "Fafaheads" doesn't have quite the same ring to it. I completely agree on the Sheila Divine; I saw them last month when my friend's brother's band opened up and I was just in awe. What a swell band. The new Elliott Smith and Eels discs are equally tremendous. Courtney, tell me it wasn't your cruel idea of an April Fools' joke, you cack. - -Dan Eriklyons1@aol.com wrote: > > Has anybody been to any concerts of any value over the past month? I may as well chime in and say something. new Eels and Elliott Smith- I agree completely with Dan. Both are amazing. I got them at the same time a few weeks ago, and listened to Elliott Smith a few times, loved it, and then stuck in the Eels, and was completely blown away. I listened to it for several days on end, and even now, its still sitting right by my cd player. Amazing, amazing music. The man E is a genius and can do no wrong. What I have been listening to... Well, to be honest, the past week or 2 I haven't listened to much of anything except the radio. I listen to the radio when I wake up in the morning, and when I drive (because the speakers in my car are shit and I'd rather turn down the stereo if the radio is on), and at night I've gotten in the habit of listening to the radio because I know a certain someone who is a DJ and I like hearing his voice. =-) Hmmm... but before I got too busy with school and was able to listen to music in free time... my CD rotation looked something like: Elliott Smith's new one, all 3 of the Eels, all 3 Guster, TUBORM, and The Folk Implosion's newest. concerts: Well, last month I drove up to phx with Rey to see Cockeyed Ghost and the Scones. AWESOME show, I loved it. The Scones played for what, 2 hours? They played their entire catalog and a couple awesome covers including Beatles and XTC. Rey, Nate, and I also made it up to phx for the GUster/Owsley concert last month. Amazing show!!! Will Owsley is the nicest guy ever. Very very nice. Nate and Rey (and me of course) were already huge Owsley fans, but I was the only one of the 3 who loved Guster too. Well, by the end of the show, they both loved Guster. =-) I was really hoping they'd sing the "fa's" in the Fa Fa Fa song the same way BFF sings them in Army and DCYP, but they didn't do it like that. would have been cool! oh well. Other than that, just lots of shows with local bands... oh wait... I did see The Sid Hillman Quartet. They are from LA. COURTNEY, you would LOVE them. I do, anyway. Go check them out, www.shq.com, go to their show, and introduce yourself to the guitarist that looks like Chandler and tell him your a friend of mine. They are super nice guys, and in fact, it looks like I'll be going out to LA to visit them this summer!! They played SXSW. So yeah, them and lots of local bands, including my favorite, Hector on Stilts who will be a special guest on my radio show on monday night. Thats all for now, I'll write me if and when I feel like it. stacy What was best of all was the longing look you gave me... that longing look... More than enough to keep me fed all year. -XTC "Harvest Festival" *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Stacy Flatt 520.621.1111 stacyf@u.arizona.edu Assistant Director Eat to the Beat Concerts @ the U of Arizona http://www.u.arizona.edu/~stacyf Powerpop DJ extrodinaire! "Best Music Website of 1999" - Magnet "One of the Four Best Music Websites for the New Millennium" - Paper Amid all the hype, excitement and fear surround digital music distribution, Insound (www.insound.com), the leading website for an underground lifestyle, is taking the analog distribution revolution to the streets. Inspired by a dramatic rise in vinyl LP and 7" sales through its site, Insound will travel to a dozen East Coast college campuses this spring, armed with a van of vinyl, hard to find CDs and fanzines. The two-week vinyl van tour, which runs April 25 - May 6, begins in New Hampshire and will travel as far South as Athens, Georgia, culminating in Princeton, New Jersey on May 6 at The Last Show -- a music festival featuring performances by Shellac, Don Caballero and Seam. At each campus, indie rock fans will be treated to free merchandise courtesy of Matador Records, Sub Pop, Polyvinyl, Emperor Norton and more. Insound will also be working with the local college radio stations to set up promotions and giveaways. People will be able to purchase limited edition 7"s, LPs and CDs from their favorite indie labels, as well as zines and underground videos. In addition, Insound will bring a catalog of releases from their most popular 100 artists, including Will Oldham, Built to Spill, Pedro the Lion and Modest Mouse. "While everybody else is worrying about a secure digital format and watermarking, we remain focused on giving our site visitors what they want," says Insound principal, Matt Wishnow. "One of the best services we can provide our users is to offer like-minded music fans music they are interested in but which may be hard to find due to the lack of proper distribution." While it may seem at odds with the Internet, one of Insound's most successful features has been their vinyl catalog. "Vinyl distribution has been neglected for years, despite the fact that interest is on the rise," Wishnow notes. "So, we decided to do something about it. Not only do we sell it through our website, we're literally bringing it to the fans. Personally, if I saw a van full of vinyl pull up in my neighborhood I'd be elated. It's like the ice cream man married my favorite record store clerk." Since its launch on March 1, 1999, Insound has become the leading website for an underground lifestyle. Vinyl sales on the site have grown by nearly 100% in relation to CD sales over the last year. Insound offers the deepest selection of underground music and film, as well as the largest archive of zine content anywhere, regular chat events, video on demand, MP3s and regular news and interviews. At least in L.A. I mean, where were a bunch of shows a *meant* to go to like Quasi and Lou Barlow, but i just couldn't muster the energy to get out and do it. But then i took a plan to Austin for the SXSW festival and all that went out the window. a week of free beer, free bbq, great bands and fabulous after parties. what made it even more fun was that there was a considerable amount of people there from soundbreak, so i got to hang out with them most of the week. I've practically lost track of how many bands i saw. wednesday - check in day for the music fest, hit dinner and margaritas with some friends i ran into from back here. then we hit the Kindercore showcase at Emo's with I Am the World Trade Center, Dressy Bessy, Etienne Cherry and Japancakes. we pretty much set up camp out there and also caught a bit from American Analog Set and the Dylan Group next door at Emo's main room. thursday - we went to one of many free beer and bbq extravaganzas at Emo's to see Man Or Astroman? in the afternoon. we hit the trade show and picked up a bunch of useless crap and about 30 more BBQ invites. then we went out to get cajun food with my friend's parents and i ate alligator. and yes, it tasted like chicken. after dinner we were going to try and hit Wanda Jackson and the Caddilac Angels, but realized it was far too late fot that so we just headed over to La Zona Rosa for Cypress Hill and the Jayhawks. I ran into some people i know from Warner Bros., one of whom was with the guy from Fastball and he totally tried to steal my concert schedule. but i got it back. hello, smackdown? after about half of the jayhawks set we took off to catch the Apples IN Stereo at Waterloo Brewing Co. and i caught Elliott Smith looking around shiftily to make sure no one recognized him spectating at the show. frida - absolute madness. first more free bber and BBQ at the listen.com party where we caught Polara and wanted to stay for Beulah, but I had obligations across town at the soundbreak party. so we took off uptown to the restaurant was and i finally run into all my psychotic coworkers. and there was an open bar, so i immediately started knocking back vanilla Stoli and tonics. WE had flown Christian in just for the day to DJ the party and it was really great. and Lewis Largent was there and i met him. remember him from MTV? lots of tattoos. anywa, he's a friend of Mark's and now he's working at Island trying to pull them out of their hole. nicely buzzed by that time, a bunch of us take a cab over to La Zona Rosa to catch Gomez at 7:30. Can i tell you this was the highlight of the festival for me? i've see them three times now, and it was simply amazing. apparently we're getting them in at soundbreak for an interview. Ian Ball, watch your back. after Gomez, we headed off with the soundbreak crew to dinner at a steak house. we went back to LZR after we ate to try and catch Creeper Lagoon and Elliott Smith, but we were totally denied. you'd think Mark Goodman could name drop or someting. pish tosh so instead we went to Stubb's and caught Nashville Pussy. we intended to stay for the Reverend Horton Heat, but after mark and Brad left, we decided to see if we could catch Mike Viola and the Candy Butchers down on 6th street. so we went and it was fantastic. they got a late start and were having a bunch of sound problems. so when the bar closed promptly at 2am, they all piled out into the street, hopped into the back of a pick up truck and played about 5 more songs acoustically. it was so great. there was this giant crowd in the street and i happened to run into 3 of my frineds from Jet Set Six who are friends with Mike. and THEN we hit the Audiopia after party with MORE free beer and BBQ and stayed there until about 4am. saturday - the friend i went with is the l.a. rep for Atlantic and so we had lunch with the Austin Atlantic rep and wrote it off to their expense account. then we went over to the Omni Hotel where everyone else from soundbreak was staying and met up for dinner. we ate at yet another steak house (i had fish) and simply stuffed ourselves. from there we decided to try and hit the AUstin Music hall for the "TBA" band, because the rumours on everyone's lips was that it was Yo La Tengo. and since they were defintely in town, why not head over there and see? so we went to the AMH. it wasn't Yo La Tengo. instead we saw the Bevis Frond and Delta 72. Delta 72 are fantastic. very Jon Spencer-ish. we stuck around for a little bit of Modest Mouse's set and had planned on staying for SEbadoh and Tenacious D as well, but decided fuck it, we're going to see the Jungle Brothers. and we did. and it was good. we caught a few other hip hop acts at the show, but then it started to rain, so we hauled ass out of there. so that was my week in austin. the newxt two weeks in L.A. are going to be about the same; Saturday night the 25th i'm seeing Rhett Miller at Largo again, Monday is the Charlatans, thursday is Flaming Lips/Looper, Friday i'm going to a taping of That 70's Show, and april 1st is Groove Armada and Giant. also next month Travis and Matthew Sweet are passing through here. yay. Erik, as far as your queries about Josh Rouse, he's pretty great. i've had the CD since january, but only just recently realized how good it is. and how can someone who toured with Wilco be bad? also getting spins in my disc changer: Catatonia - Equally Cursed and Blessed Arling & Cameron - Music For Imaginary Films DJ Me DJ You - Rainbows and Robots V/A - At Home With the Groovebox Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out oh, here's a very interesting tidbit i learned whilst in Austin: my boss Mark Goodman is good friends with Alan Wolmark. and apparently Ben has plans to be in L.A. in the next few weeks and we're getting him in to do a 'Music Of My Life' segment. very random. i almost choked on my Ahi when mark told me that. ummm.... yeah. ~Courtney ------------------------------ End of The Rockford Files V3 #31 ********************************
