Watched Heathers this weekend and was once again reminded how 80s teen movies blow 90s teen movies out of the water. "Bulimia is so '87, Heather!" Oh, Drive Me Crazy, you do not even come close, even though I didn't see you. Anne, I am working in downtown Boston (Copley Square) at a web magazine. It is fun, as far as jobs go. A mini-RF gathering in Boston sounds like a must. Anyway, in my old email account I found this review of the show the boys did in Boston this fall that for some reason I was never able to send to the RF (it kept on bouncing). And so, since there are no shows and no new music to discuss, I thought it would be sort of funny to post it now anyway. A blast from the past, as it were. Here goes: I went to see the boys on Saturday in Boston. They were playing at MixFest in the middle of City Hall Plaza. The plusses: it was free. The minuses: Uh.... it was in the middle of the city. Lots of people there for free entertainment who had never heard BFF. Lots of people just there for Duran Duran (who closed the show, right after the boys played. And I must admit, I love the fact that I've now heard Duran Duran perform Girls on Film live.) I got there about an hour early and clawed my way up to something resembling the front. I was about 7 "rows" back from the stage, the farthest I've ever been at a BFF concert which made me sad, but the good thing was that right at that 7th row was a little stair, so I actually could see over everyone's heads. And I had a nice view of all three of them, which was also a novelty instead of having to pick which of our fair friends to study. Oh, and for lunch that day, I had Chick-Fil-A. What a great way to get in the mood! OK, so they didn't really play surprises: I can remember hearing Don't Change Your Plans, Steven's Last Night, Magic, Philosophy, Narcolepsy, Army, BOWWCL, OAD&200SF, Underground, One Angry Dwarf and Underground (played back to back, no "I was never cool in school" intro) were fabulous -- they were ON. So much energy, it just really clicked. A great way to end the show, although there was no encore so no real fun crazy moments, although Ben did do a nice Elvis imitation. And Magic was lovely, since it had turned dark outside, so there was just a spotlight on Ben and only the sound of the piano introduction. And it was cool to hear Philosophy outside, too, and Ben looked around at Boston's (rather pitiful) skyline while he "sang and danced about a highrise." He was wearing a flannel, and Darren looked great in a suit, and Robert was in a little trendy suit, too! Supercute! So in conclusion: certainly not the best BFF concert I've ever been to, but hey -- free Ben Folds Five is never anything to turn down. Better than the Tufts show in May, actually. Sorry, a rather vapid and stupid review, but I am on my coffee break at work and can't say more. Actually, this email address is about to disappear forever, so write this one down, kiddies: kdemcak@aquent.com. And to Erik: it just breaks my heart to see the Red Sox doing so well in the playoffs when the Cubbies, well.... we won't even go there.
