I know about Joe, Marc's borhter. Very cool stuff indeed! Too bad I live in Arizona! Hah! But like I said, I'm going to make the best of it out here. In fact, tonight, one of my all time gfave local bands (and they are so great they might be one of my all time faves period!) Hector On Stilts is playing tonight. Hopefully I'll head out there tonight after work. As for you hating powerpop, thats fine and dandy, I don't hate you. =-) However, Joe, Marc's Brother, Guster, and Jump, Little Children are all heralded in the powerpop community. Thedo have some very definate powerpop features, and both Guster and Jump, Little Children have worked with some very prominent figures of powerpop. Though the bands definate do a little genre stretching. anyway, gotta go now, bye bye, stacy I feel like a quote out of context. -Ben Folds Five "Best Imitation of Myself" **************************************************************** Stacy Flatt stacyf@u.arizona.edu 520.621.1111 Assistant Director Eat to the Beat Concerts @ U of Arizona KAMP Student Radio Powerpop DJ Extraordinaire 8-10pm MST listen in real audio! http://kamp.arizona.edu/audio/live.ram **************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Dec 1999 12:08:07 EST From: Eriklyons1@aol.com Subject: Put your lighters away.... ..this isn't a Poison concert. So no flaming... But I have been giving some thought to this entire power pop thing-a-ma-jig. guster is power-pop? You wouldn't know by seeing them in concert. Let's approach this from a the bottom up. A dichotomy of power pop, if you will. When I think of pop music, and I realize there are different levels of pop, but universally maybe I am looking at pop as the Go Go's, M. Jackson, New Kids on the Block, The "fuck me in the" backstreet boys, and so on. So power pop might be an infusion of something to electrify the pop music and deparate it slightly from groove that pop seems to carry around with it. Messner by Folds would fit in there for me. As a matter of fact, and I know you can slap me around for saying this, Ben Folds may be a founder of power pop, if you want to continue to use the phrase power pop. But the reason for my argument is because I just do not see Guster as power pop. Modern Rock, yes. That is a group I stick a lot of artists in. I prefer it over the alternative rock catch phrase that was around in the 80's. Guster isn't even modern pop. J, L C maybe, but not Guster. Actually, J, L C can fit into power pop also if you want. But here's the problem. The non-fraggle, non-drummer man of Guster looks like he should be in a power pop band. So go figure. This whole genre thing drives me nuts when I try to describe different artists to my fucking-lame-ass friends who still camp out by the Best Buy waiting for the "artist" to release another pop album. Not that he isn't talented, but cm'on. I mean, shit, I don't even know the correct pronumciation of genre....get some help here Anne???? So bottom line? I don't care about categorizing artists. Donesn't bother me. What bothers me is the difficulty of placing artists somewhere, in some group. I guess whatever sells records!!!! By the by, ever sit around thinking of names for bands?? Well, I need some help...since Sinforosa is already taken, (dammit Marcus!), I am in a band lost without a name. Feel free to shout out. We are a power-folk-with-a-dash-of-pop band. It's Aaron! Better yet, as I reminisce now, was you and Brett sitting with us in that cheesy all-night diner and dissecting the chord structures of every song on TUBORM (which was then unreleased and only starting to propagate via mp3). Freaks. Not to mention the rather interesting assortment of living room furniture at Sarah's, including the vertically-challenged Mr. Hanulak getting the long couch and the immortal attack of the killer bunny rabbit on yrs. truly. Well. My trip to see Matthew Sweet, a concert I was really looking forward to, last night was cruelly cut short by stupid age policies; even though last week's Guster show there was all-ages and the Sweet concert wasn't advertised 21+, they carded at the door and I drove the 80 miles for naught. Milestones Music Room, I fart in your general direction. And Sara, I think it's "conguero". And Erik, I agree. Over-analyzing music defeats the purpose of having fun and liking it. Squabbling over whether so-and-so is power pop or not is well and good, but if you like the artist at hand, why argue over what type of music they are? - -Dan Pyser02@aol.com wrote: > > In a message dated 12/14/99 3:27:28 AM Eastern Standard Time, > owner-rockford-files-digest@smoe.org writes: > > << I remember Le > Frak only from making lots of rude jokes about it with Jason Feifer > whilst Leigh and his friends were off getting bad fast food for us all > (and getting lost along the way, teehee).
