Sophie's Choice all over again.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 30 Nov 1999 08:59:32 -0500 From: Eric Patton Subject: My Turkey Day This was one of the most pleasant visits back to Chicago I've had in a long time. No fights, no parents bugging me, no big brother trying to demean me, and most of all, no stress. I loved it. It was the first dinner in a long time where no one tried to kill each other. ;) Well, in keeping with the musical rant theme I've been having, I actually went to a couple shows while I was in town. Derrick May, one of the founders of techno, was in town, so I went to go see him. In a club, unfortunately, because I remembered why I hate the club scene. Hordes of gorgeous women, made completely out fo plastic. Hundreds of people in the room, and only eight people are dancing 'cause everyone else isn't drunk enough or is looking to score. And the thing that got to me the most was the bad dancers. Now, I have no problem with people just going out and getting into the groove and doing their thing, but if you're not a good dancer, at least realize it. These two girls were the worst offenders. One had co-ordination, but no moves. The other had moves but no co-ordination. So the former looked like she graduated sum cum laude from the Tori Amos Flail and Pose school of dance, and the other looked like she was doing a mix of interpretive dance, the mating ritual of some insect, and getting the Holy Ghost. She just facinated me because I'd never seen anyone move like they needed more limbs to stay in step. ;) Anyway, the atmosphere got to be too much for me, so I left and met up with a few of my other friends to go see a band called My Scarlet Life. They rocked. They had a guitar, keyboard, drums, and two vocalist. One was a redhead. Can you say drool? I've got to get over this weakness. Well, maybe later. ;) Anyway, they did a very Switchblade Symphony-esque set that was really impressive. The coolest thing about that show was a guiy just came up to me and randomly handed me a CD from his band. It's a trip-hop group with actual lyrics, which is kinda strange, but cool. The name of that band is the Mystechs, so if you hear of them being in your area, go check them out. It's worth it. Anyway, enough of my chatter. I'll post again when I see something cool. Laters! (I gained SUCH folding skills!) Also Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's "Christmastime in Tinseltown" and "Suzy Snowflake" by Soul Coughing, if only because its so FUCKING WEIRD!!! I dont get Suzy snowflake anyways, and hearing M Doughty...why the hell is that song assosciated with Christmas? Who originally sings Winter Weather? Okay, Im sure that there are other people on this list who watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer and or Angel, and I have to say: I lust after Spike and (gulp) Doyle! I need to find a boy like them. (yes! A demon and a vampire!) Or a boy with a UK accent, skinny frame, and innate sexiness. It would be nice.=) Those two actors though...they're just sexy. And it was so nice to watch Buffy tonight. By far the best show on TV. I would like to get into Joss Whedon's brain. Im on the verge of a wicked cold. And school to attend to, too! ~Elisabeth ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Dec 1999 01:33:36 -0500 From: Amanda McClintock Subject: Sophie's Choice all over again.... I had to wait to post my favs of 1999 until I got the chance to read a few of you all's! I always end up forgetting somebody really important. If I ever win an award I know I better have a thank you list made up already!!! Anyway as far as the albums that blew my mind of 1999......(drum roll please) 5- Well I have to say that TUABORM is one that I waited excitedly to get, and truly enjoy to listen to, even though the songs didn't hit me and turn my insides around like ST and WEAEA. However, the way in which I obtained my copy is a wonderful tale... I went to the store as the kids lined up to buy the new releases at 11:55 on a Monday night. There on the counter I see a contest to win the very CD I have come to buy, and a video, mobile and poster. Well I entered the drawing, still planning on purchasing the CD since I never win things I actually want. At 12 the cashiers began ringing the kids in line, and a store clerk removed the contest display and shuffled her hand around and pulled out a name, then read it allowed to another clerk who was putting the prized merchandise together.... and what did I hear leave her lips then my very own name, so I won that wonderful CD, and perhaps that's why it sounds so sweet! 4- Saint Etienne's Good Humor is one groovy CD... I just love driving to this CD. I just kick up the base, set the cruise control and glide~~~~~~ I have been a fan of these guys for a while, but this album just kicks all of their other albums ass's. 3- Next I'd have to say that Cibo Matto's Stereo Type-A blew my from my chair as I hit play! I think this album is just amazing. I think these kids are doing their damnedest to make some really great, and unique music. I even got to see these fantastic musicians live, and they blew me away there as well. 2- The runner up position is reserved for the band that stole my heart before Ben Folds Five had an album out yet! SLOAN~ What can I say, I grew up an hour from Canada, and this band made my freshman year in High school worth all the torment. Between the Bridges is fantastic. This has got to be their touch-of-Pink-Floyd album. The opening track is worth buying the whole album for. I just am amazed that us Americans haven't totally become engrossed in Sloan yet.... but I really can't complain, I can still see them in small venues :) 1- Well my number one pick goes to The Original Brothers and Sisters of Love out of Ann Arbor Michigan. Now I do have some ties to certain band members... BUT even if I wasn't the sister to the bassets I would still love these guys. I know hardly any of you know them, but you can if you want to (www.tobasol.com). For a CD that wasn't fully produced with all the bells and whistles their album, The Legende of Jeb Minor, sounds fantastic. They write really complex music and lyrics, and have enough balls to deliver them with violins, and accordions. I know I have pushed them on you all once before, but I do find myself listening to their CD all the time.... and I'm slightly embarrassed of it.... But who cares, You can't pick your family, but you can pick your music! Well there you go.... I could go on forever with a top 20, 30, 40+ but since I have been watching The List on VH1 I feel I have to validate all of my choices, and well that would take up just too much of your time! Keep the lists coming though, I am keeping them and checking out all the bands I have never heard of !!! (My bank account is shrieking in horror as I type that!) Thanks Kids!
