Yes, I spelled that wrong. Deal with it. Ok, I have to make a best of 99 list. I'm having such a hell of a time with it too! There was way too much stuff released this year, that I can't bare to narrow it down. This is in no way my final list, and its in absolutely no order, but here is what I've come up with so far. The Promise Ring - Very Emergency Foo Fighters: There's Nothing Left to Lose Myracle Brah: Plate Spinner Counting Crows - This Desert Life Guster - Lost and Gone Forever Robyn Hitchcock - Jewels for Sophia Wilco - Summer Teeth Beth Orton - Central Reservation Piebald - (I forget the name of the album) American Football - (I forget this name too) XTC - Apple Venus Vol. 1 Matthew Sweet - In Reverse Built to Spill - Keep it Like a Secret Merrymakers - Bubblegun Taxiride - Imaginate Owsley - Owsley Fountains of Wayne - Utopia Parkway Old 97's - Fight Songs Hefner - The Fidelity Wars The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulliten Ed James - Meet Ed James! Jason Falkner - Can You Still Feel Looper - Up A Tree Fleming and John - The Way We Are Mayflies USA - Summertown Ben Lee - Breathing Tornados Sloan - Between the Bridges Ben Folds Five - The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner The Gladhands - Wow and Flutter Belle and Sebastian - Tigermilk (ok, so it was a reissue...) Linus of Hollywood - Your Favorite Record Gus - Word of Mouth Parade Anton Barbeau - A Splendid Tray The Hang Ups - Second Story Jimmy Eat World - Clarity grrrr, thats 35 albums. Thats a lot. And there are still a lot that I am forgetting about, albums I've reviewed for the radio station but don't own, ones I've borrowed from friends but don't own, not to mention all the ones that people are raving about but I haven't heard... Its so frustrating making a best of 99 list, but for some reason, I really enjoy it. Just like the whole mix tape thing. and btw, Thanks Courtney for looking up that website www.artofthemix.com I knew there was someone else on this list that would appriciate it the way I do!!! stacy I don't want to stay in love. -Hefner "Hymn for the Cigarettes" *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Stacy Flatt 520.621.1111 stacyf@u.arizona.edu Assistant Director Eat to the Beat Concerts @ the U of Arizona http://www.u.arizona.edu/~stacyf Powerpop DJ Extraordinaire! I could have a bit of a go at Ben Lee too, but he is a lesser evil in comparison. I just look at Jason Singh and have major John Stamos flashbacks, and the whole "we are not a boy band" crap is exactly that - you might wear leather lads and you might play guitars, but you can change the wrapping and have the product the same...... besides that anomaly that is one hell of a quality list - and I don't post this with the intention of starting a big argument, but really, that inclusion totally surprised me! i think i might recommence lurking right about now jodes ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Nov 1999 21:37:05 -0700 From: Stacy Lynn Subject: oh yeah! One more thing! In my best of list, I'm not including any compilations (whether they be best of a particular artist, tributes or anything), soundtracks, or EPs. And all were released in 99, but thats tricky because the Merrymakers was released in 98 overseas, and so was Ben Lee, etc. Also, I am including reissues. Thats why Tigermilk can be on there. So I'm breaking some rules that some best of listmakers make. I couldn't include The Merrymakers, Owsley, Ben Lee, or Belle and Sebastian to name a few if I followed the really strict rules. stacy *turning list making and mix tape making into an art form* What was best of all was the longing look you gave me... that longing look... Im not the only person who doesnt really dig Ben Lee too much. I do like grandpaw would, but I believe his albums after that just have gone downhill. Into pretentious dreck land. Ooh, and speaking of Grand Royal, I swear I saw Sean Lennon and Yuka Honda the other day, in Boston, taking the T. In fact, I do swear. That's celebrity sighting #3, after Macaulay Culkin (he said flying fuck to me! Hes worth more money than God!) and the American Beauty trifecta...(Wes! Bentley! yeah!) but before Dicky Barrett. I hope everyone had a fun thanksgiving, although I personally hate the holiday myself. Why must family decide to be fucked up around then? ~Elisabeth "It is sad. Whilst Stacy fills us all in on the US powerpop bands that deserve to hit the big time, I will fill you in on some other quality Oz music that if you ever get a chance to listen to, keep an open mind: Art of Fighting 2 Litre Dolby Augie March (yes them again - they are not truly that genre, but I really love them!!) Gersey Powderfinger (well, they are not post rock or lo-fi at all, but I love em, and since they finally have received a small part of the recognition they deserve with some hard earned arias, I really want to spread the powdy word) For a bit of a riff fest and a well produced album, go for Shihad's The General Electric - recorded in Canada and I will have the extreme pleasure of interviewing them in a few weeks time - GO eye candy!! Ben Lee - I did not mind some of his earlier stuff, but I cannot get past the attitude and ego, and I think that Breathing Tornadoes is over produced, but that could be an Ed (??) Buller thing, cos he also produced Alex Lloyd's debut (check that one out if you can) and that also gets earmarked as being slightly overproduced - he should have ditched some of the synth and stuck with piano and acoustic stuff. More info - if any of you go to the BFF concerts on their current tour (imagine that!!) and you go to the merchandise stall - if there is a lass with an Aussie accent manning it, her name is Rayke ( pronounced Rie-Kee) and she was the bass player in the band Pollyanna, who supported BFF on their latest tour over here. She has ditched her long time boyfriend Matt (who is the singer in Pollyanna) and is now apparently dating one of the BFF tour managers. wooo what a gossip fest jodes ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Nov 1999 23:40:12 -0700 From: Stacy Lynn Subject: Re: powerpop At 05:15 PM 11/29/1999 +1100, bliss@telstra.easymail.com.au wrote: >particular genre, then it would have to be that termed "lo-fi post-rock" - >delicate melodies, songs with virtually no structure, ethereal vocals - many >instruments used in somewhat unusual ways.... that is the direction that I sounds very interesting, something I'd probably enjoy as well. >Augie March (yes them again - they are not truly that genre, but I really love them!!)
