Wow, the Files are being closed. I honestly don't know what to say about that. I mean, I can see our soon-to-not-be-anymore FL's point on why he's closing it down, but I always thought the list wasn't just put up for Bentent. That's what the Armchair was for. This was just a common link between cool people that liked BFF. I know I've gotten more than just knowledge about the Boys here. I mean, I fell in love with Belle & Sebastien, Sinforosa, and Fleming & John because I heard about them on this list. I got all kinds of trivia knowledge. And I got to talk to really cool people. But, hey, it's not my list to manage, and if the FL wants to shut the game down, then it's his call. But I know I, for one, will miss the inane chatter of the board, even when it had nothing to do with Ben and his Folding Five. Anyone who wants to keep in touch, you know where I'll be. Laters, and probably for the last time, Hail Eris. ERIC ___________________________________________________________________________ "If a tree falls... If a tree falls... Oh yeah, it was the Gigolo Aunts from Boston, and you could have classified their set as powerpop, but it seemed like more emo-core to me. I tend not to think of bands by their genre as much as I do songs. Anyone can change the style of music they play. Hell, Pat Boone put out a heavy metal album. ;) ERIC ___________________________________________________________________________ "If a tree falls... If a tree falls... I certainly can't claim to be an active rockford-files participant, but I subscribed after hearing about it from King Smoe (Jeff Wasilko) last year. rockford-files sounded like a nice alternative to the Magical Armchair, and it has been. I'm still sorry to see both the Magical Armchair and this list go, even with all the juvenalia on the MA. I've been a long-time subscriber to another smoe.org list, ecto@smoe.org (in fact, long before it came to be hosted by smoe.org), because it's been the classic example of a list where pretty much anything can come up for discussion, yet things have remained consistently civil. No one's quite sure how ecto does this, but it seems to be a combination of a fairly large core of genuinely nice people on the list and a natural agreement on the ethic of tolerance. It's sort of odd to me to see people here being unhappy about discussion of artists other than Ben Folds Five, since I'm used to an environment in ecto where it's completely normal to discuss almost anything but their patron artist (Happy Rhodes) or their standard genre (female singer-songwriters). So maybe before we throw in the towel people should just step back and see that things aren't really so bad here, and if we agree not to get uptight about some occasional topic drift. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Nov 1999 15:32:58 -0700 From: Stacy Lynn Subject: Re: Silly me... And thank you, Eric, for responding to the question. This was the kind of answer I was looking for. I wasn't looking for any fights, just trying to figure out if it was my beloved Gigolo Aunts touring with CC (as they have in the past with the likes of FOW), or if another band was running around with the same name. Hey, it happened with the band Self, it could happen with the GA, esp considering its a literary referece. To what, I don't quite remember. Oh well. I highly reccomend their latest album. Its called Minor Chords and Major Themes. Its "very very good" ;-) Its definately very powerpop (yes, I feel confortable using terms like that, not because I feel its the end all be all of the definition of their music, but its a good reference point) and highly reccomended for any fan of Fountains of Wayne, Greenberry Woods, Odds, Candy Butchers, and the ilk. They had a couple eariler albums, which although good, were not as "powerpop-ish" as their latest. By the way, I am very sad to see the RF go, and I also believe that it doesn't have to end this way. LAck of posts is due to down time, or perhaps some people found a new outlet to express themselves. So be it. But I for one still enjoy the posts I get from the RF. Well, most. And just so that you don't go thinking I'm a horrible person to classify music or whatever, its just a reference point, thats all. And as for Powerpop, yesterday I had lunch with 2 professional musicains from LA who refer to the music they play as "powerpop" and like other "powerpop" bands. I could give you the websites of numerous bands that call their music "powerpop." But thats not all they say about it, they also list influences, bands they might sound like, etc. But say "powerpop" and I've got a rough idea of what you mean. Like I said, its a reference point. And I hope in the future, if anyone has a problem with me, or something I've said, they take it off the list. The list really doesn't need to have crap like that posted to it. Anyway, thats my nickle. I really don't think it has to end this way, but if it does, people can always email me, IM me, or icq me. I'll be around. stacy What was best of all was the longing look you gave me... that longing look...
