What do these terms even mean?! As a musician, I can honestly say I've never heard them applied to music by musicians. They are vacuous marketing/demographics terms & have nothing to do w/anything. So, Eric, if you like Gigolo Aunts, then like away, my brothah! Emo-core on w/yer bad selph! PS. Sorry, but I find these inane attempts @ classifying music offensive, so I get a little worked up:-)! ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 09:11:30 -0700 From: Stacy Lynn Subject: Re: Starting Another Heated Exchange, I'm Sure Hmm. seems to me if it was no big deal to you what something was called, it wouldn't be a big deal, end of story. I just found it odd that they were being called emo-core, a genre so different from powerpop, I was thinking perhaps it was a different band. Which is why I asked if it was the same gigolo aunts, the ones from boston. I could name albums if you'd like. It was simply my attempt to get clairification. And, ok, so you don't like "labels" fine. The Gigolo Aunts I know sound more like Fountains of Wayne, Dillon Fence, The Posies, Skycycle, etc, and not like Planes Mistaken for Stars, Jets to Brazil, Handsome Boy Modleing School, or Antiartica. Does that help? stacy *who apparently lacks skills at intelligent posting in Marcus' opinion* ps I've heard plenty of musicians classify stuff, so just because something doesn't happen in your little world, doesn't mean it doesn't happen, period. I know what Gigolo Aunts sound like. That wasn't my point. I just don't know what these industry-insider terms mean. I also know musicians do classify music, using actual musical history-based terms like "jazz," "rock," "classical," "blues," etc. That's a little different than "emo-core," or "powerpop," which say absolutely nothing about music, its background, etc. It's rather like saying something is "street," "gen-x," etc. THEY MEAN NOTHING! But my main point that was missed was that I WAS CRITICIZING THE USE OF VACUOUS MARKETING TERMS, NOT STACY HERSELF. *noticing Eric, the other person addressed in my post wasn't quite as quick to get defensive* ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 13:44:33 -0500 From: Dan Cohen Subject: Re: Starting Another Heated Exchange, I'm Sure Handsome Boy Modeling School are emo-core? If you say so. See what I mean? I would classify them in a genre all their own (as usually happens when you put DJ Shadow, Money Mark, Miho Hatori, and Father Guido Sarducci on one disc). To go off on a tangent, it doesn't matter anymore. Consider the cliche of "alternative". Alternative to what? It's on the radio, it's on MTV (to an extent), so it can hardly be considered edgy and underground, correct? There is no such thing as rock music anymore. Kyle's mom is dead. When you type in the subject heading that you are going to start shit, odds are you ARE going to start shit. Common sense would direct your new addressee to be the ONE person whose comment ruffled your feathers. Why am I posting to this comment to the list? Because 2 weeks shy of the Files 3rd birthday I am offically announcing my resigning of the list. Due to the lack of posts AND for that matter, any decent discussions (BF5 or otherwise), it seems futile to continue. Many good things have come from this list. Many. But as always, there are some bad things also. It is so hard to interpret meaning in an email sometimes and that can lead to misunderstanding, which as seen on the MA can lead to disaster. There are not enough people still subscribed to the list to cause a major disruption like on the MA, but there are enough to keep a conversation going and that isn't happening. So make your last posts, say good bye and keep the peace. I will let you know when the last day will be to post. One of the good things to come from this list is that Eric lost his viginity on the list! And Tina reclaimed her's!!! heh heh..... ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of The Rockford Files V2 #297 *********************************
