Actually, we're not Lester and the Southern Belles, we're The Incredible Smoothies. And I got Kiwi Smoothie here on the drum set--Kiwi Smoothie!" That's how Darren introduced "Somebody's Accident" during his first public show with the new band. I'm pretty sure he was kidding though--he made "smoothie" references throughout his set, after first introducing the band as "Lester and the Southern Belles." What can I say about this though...hearing Darren solo with his acoustic guitar was great, but I have always been more of a fan of full band arrangements--similar to how I like Elliott Smith with Quasi better than just Elliott alone. The band really added to the whole effect, and Darren's songs took on new life with the addition of another guitar, a bass, keyboards, and drums. There were LOTS of keyboards actually, much of it along the lines of the analog synth stuff on Messner. For the most part, Darren plugged in, playing a Fender Telecaster (I think), though he also used the acoustic on some songs. "You Come And I Go" featured Darren playing harmonica (with the holder, a la Tom Petty), about which he commented, "I haven't worn this since high school." It all sounded amazing though, and it really got me excited to hear how this all sounds when recorded in the studio. The set included one new song that Darren didn't play at the Knitting Factory or CB's Gallery back in August, titled "Boycott Crazy," or "Boycott Graceland." I'm not sure which, and I didn't bother to ask! Brownies was a cool venue too, basically a glorified bar with a pretty kickin' sound system. It's so awesome to be able to see part of Ben Folds Five in such a small room. I also met up with my buddy Lisa there and some other friends, so that was super cool. Plenty of other folks from BFF camp were also in attendance, making it feel more like a friendly party than a show. Yes, Darren rocked, and so does his band. Definitely check him out if you get the chance! Did anyone watch the webcast? Did it work out all right?
