Well, since Ben has gone out and done solo stuff, I can see why he'd be picked. But Ben Folds Five as a whole depends as much upon the talents of Darren and Robert as it does on Ben. Personally, I think they singled out Ben because he's adorable and his name's on the marquis everytime. He's the most recognizable member of the band to the poseurs who don't really know. ;) As for why they threw him in the instrumentalist catergory, quite simply, he proved that it's cool to play piano again in a way that hasn't been seen since Jerry Lee Lewis. As amazing as his songwriting skills are, I still remember with a sense of awe and wonder the first time I saw his bounce his stool off the keys and catch it. Anyway, that's my piece. ERIC ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 10:04:49 -0400 From: Anne Sawyer Subject: News from Space Mountain... Hey all! Sorry that I've been less than communicative! Things are a bit crazy around here, what with all of us wearing mouse ears and whatnot... I have made the decision to not go to any of the upcoming Boston BFF shows... mainly because they are showcases, and I'm not sure my BeFeF fix needs would be met. Plus I have a small thing to do on one of the days that they are coming... there's this whole wedding thing for my brother where I'm the maid of honor or something... *grin* But I just maaaaaaaaay catch them elsewhere... we'll have to see. On my music scene... I have been taking double helpings of Cake on a daily basis. They are rocking my @ss off these days! Loving it. Plus, I started round two of Messner. I'm enjoying different songs this time around (still love Jane, but am really enjoying Lullabye and Narcolepsy...). DCYPFM is getting a lot of play on adult contemporary radio around here, which is nice. Eric: I think you'd rock our world in your black outfit... but I'm not too much of a fashion plate. Ask Markus -- he's the one with the kick-ass drumming gear! Erik: First off... good to hear from you! Secondly... Hmmmmmmmmmm... Ben Folds nominated as an instrumentalist? Well, that doesn't sit too poorly with me. He is probably the premier pianist on the circuit today... so why not recognize his talents? As to being nominated as an individual rather than as a group. Well. I think I can understand that as well. First of all, no matter which way you slice it, the band carries his name. So that already pushes him to the forefront. Let's face it... whenever a single person's name is the moniker for a group... that person gets most of the attention. Sure, there are exceptions... but they are few and far between (the most notable is probably the J. Geils Band, but Van Halen could also fit in that category to a certain extent). So although WE all know the virtuoso talents of Darren and Robert... the band really is Ben's. Secondly, he writes the vast majority of their songs, and is the only lead singer as well (even though we all know that Darren's and Rob's voices are lead-worthy). So while I guess I would WISH that Ben Folds Five would be nominated... I guess I can't complain that at least one of them was nominated. :) Of course, since I don't read Playboy (not even for the articles) -- I am a bit hampered. I'm not sure if there is some other thing that I need to take into account or anything... :) Well... gotta get to work! That damn rat is cracking the whip these days... CHEERS! - -Anne You think she's an open book. But you don't know which page to turn to... Do you? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 10:12:22 CDT From: "Erik Lyons" Subject: maybe I was loose Let me try to be more clear: Playboy sang the praises of the GROUP, yet never did and feature, much less a little squib note about Ben Folds as an individual. So I am trying to figure out how they get from point A to point D, seemingly skipping over B and C. I certainly agree so far as to the qualifing nature of Ben as one of the premire instrumentalists. I just don't see the reasoning for nominating him when FOP wasn't a showcase of his piano talents. Like I said, the line is a little blurred because he *is* a talented instrumentalist, but the timing is a tad of the mark for me. I am sure I am not any more clear, but maybe you can see what I mean. I want some Mickey Mouse ears..... ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 14:07:50 PDT From: "Markus Kamp" Subject: This Liberal Heart Bleeds Music Eric: God, man, you crack me up. Good to see you've not lost your sense of humor. Erik: All I can say is, in other music polls (never having seen one of these "Play-boy"s you speak of...ahem!) "instrumentalists" are frequently singled out from the other 12 members of their respective ensembles. One is reminded of Geddy Lee's frequent nominations for "best bassist/Canadian chicken-embryo impersonator", Keith Moon's near-perennial "best drummer/hotel redecorator" nominations (continuing long after he attempted to disqualify himself by inducing his own physician-prescribed death), and Wee Willie McGonnighle's stranglehold on the category of "best piper/shortest kilt". So feel not pity for our friends Darren & Robert (or Frally & the SNZ horn section, for that matter), but rather rejoice, REJOICE I say! in the recognition of our fav-o-rite pianie playist by this delicious nudie rag. After all, if anyone knows music it's a glossy 'zine dedicated to the masturbatory delights of y-chromosomers everywhere...though I'm reserving my celebrations till the publishing of the Barely Legal Busty Teen Babes Readers' Poll, '99! More people need to post. My hotmail is getting downwright slow. Although, I think everyone is in hiding right now...no one I know is too much into the communication thing. I think Anne made a good call on not going to these BFF shows in the Boston area. Where's the Boston love? Not counting the x-mas rave, they really havent played a proper headlining show since nov 97 (Roxy..am I right on the year?) That's sad! Im not going to the "College Rave" myself because it seems so bloody calculated and cheesy...but Im kind of pumped for the Mix Fest, if only for Dido, BFF, its free, and the total hellhole that is City Hall Plaza. I have third row tickets for the Guster/JLC show! And Im only going for JLC! I saw Gomez last night. They were wonderful, damm sexy, and Ian Ball is beautiful...exquisite, even. Such a fun show. Oh! I know why I shouldve posted! I saw American Beauty the 12th...and I went to a q&a afterwards with practically the whole cast and the director! I was doing time with Kevin Spacey! Wes Bentley was answering questions! It was very cool. I will discuss it later. FYI...Thora Birch was slated to play the little sister role in Election... Moses wants me to write a paper on him. ~Elisabeth ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 13:53:10 +1000 From: bliss@telstra.easymail.com.au Subject: Possible Move & other news *possibly a long post* Since the call has gone out to post out, I have a couple of things - out of the lurking corner for a little while!! Firstly, I saw the lads on the recent Aussie tour, in Ben's new home town of Adelaide, and they were *excellent*. I was in such a bad mood that day, was originally a little peeved at the high cost of the tickets, and was in the frame of mind that if the concert was not good then I was maybe not gonna be a BFF fan anymore. I was also dubious of how the TUBORM tracks would go over live. Luckily for me, the concert blew me away right from the beginning. The lads looked to be having a good time, were in total synch with each other, and were in fine musical voice. There was not a lot of banter happening (except the calls from the audience "I Love You Darren", "I love you Robert", "Show us your kids Ben"), but comment came from the audience about Robert's shirt, and then a call from the audience to make a song about Robert's shirt - which eventuated and became in the end a song about Robert's underoos!!! I had a smile on my face the entire night, even while being squished against the barrier. ALL of it was worth it. I had also had a vague impression that the band may have been close to calling it quits, but they really looked close during the set, and those thoughts were dispelled from my mind. Secondly, just prior to the concert tour, I read an interview with Ben in the Sunday Mail or Advertiser (I forget which - i was also gonna keep it, but in the big spring clean last weekend it inadvertantly got ditched) Ben mentioned that Robert and Darren were going to gauge things while they were here, and if all went well then they would also consider moving here. Ben wants to live here permanently as he wants Louis and Gracie to have lil ocker aussie accents. Has anyone else heard anything to this effect, and what do you all think. I am unsure whether to think it was usual Ben 'hijinks' or if he was serious. Jodes ------------------------------ End of The Rockford Files V2 #261 *********************************
