MMMMmmmmm Re: Mascara and lip gloss (long) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 07:08:58 -0400 From: Anne Sawyer Subject: Just a kiss... ...to prove it all night Prove it all night Hey all! What can I say? Bruce Springsteen just blew me away and I had to go into hiding for a bit. :) Well, that and there was this little announcement that Disney has decided to invest in toysmart.com (that would be the company I work for) and things just got nuts... Sorry I have been out of commission for so long! First things first: Bruce ROCKED. Rockedrockedrocked. Best concert I ever saw -- bar none. Now, that was tough for me to come to terms with, being such a huge BeFeF fan and all. But the charisma that that man carries in his smallest finger onstage... My God. And can the E Street band put on a show?... oh yes indeedy they can. Ben Folds Five: I heard DCYPFM on the radio yesterday... I actually shouted "Hey!" at my radio dial... (For you Boston area folks... I heard them on The River, 92.5 -- which is out of Lowell, actually.) And the DJ had great things to say about the song/album... except I had to yell at him because he called them THE Ben Folds Five... *harrumph*! Markus/Robbie Fulks: Yep, the name of the song you refer to is "F*ck This Town". Have you picked up Let's Kill Saturday Night yet? Welp. Have to get back to work... but one last thing... C A R R I E !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Welcome back from the Land of the Lost, babe! I missed ya! Take care all! - -Anne ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 13:51:34 -0400 From: "Leigh 13" Subject: Mascara and lip gloss (long) [warning: long post, it's a whole week's worth!] I'm happy that my little mention of Robbie Fulks and Travis got some discussion going. Markus, your post about the ills of categorizing music these days was just wonderful! However, I'm still not sure what "fakeositudeidness" is supposed to mean. As for the folks who don't like Fulks...at first, I didn't dig him either. I first saw him at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC, and at best I thought, "eh..." Then after seeing him again in Philadelphia, DC, and Virginia Beach, he began to grow on me. I think the southern crowd in VA helped a lot--the NYC fans were definitely a lot more belligerent toward him. Next up, Elisabeth is the best! And Shara, as well...I've got a bit to say about Jump, Little Children. My my my, keep reading. The last week has been pretty intense as far as good concerts go, so I just wanted to mention what's been going on. + Wednesday: Guster w/ Jump, Little Children J,LC just blew me away. I forget their names, but the two singer/guitarists are just awesome. The one guy looks like Jude and the other (who also plays accordion) reminds me quite favorably of Vinnie from Sponge. He knew how to dress like a rock star as well--from the plastic pants and crushed red velvet leopard-spotted shirt to his spiky hair, this guy was stylin'! Jump, Little Children SO rocks!! They did all sorts of great metal finger-tapping stuff, jazzy string bass grooves, and full-on rock power. These guys definitely get my vote for Most Impressive Band I Hadn't Heard Before. I picked up their CD 'Magazine' as well and it rocks my world. Guster was excellent too, but I was upset that they never went through with their attempted cover of 'Sweet Child O' Mine.' All the new songs from Lost And Gone Forever sound very very cool. + Thursday: Guster w/ Mike Errico I was unhappy to find out that J,LC wasn't playing again, but I thought of Matty J when I saw Mike Errico was playing. He was very good, just one man and his acoustic guitar...sorta reminiscent of Robyn Hitchcock or a funnier, angrier Jude. I thought Guster was way better the second night. Brian, the percussionist just continued to wow me with his skill. The guy plays a drum kit with his hands way better than most guys can with sticks. Markus, if you haven't seen Guster live, I think you'd be really impressed! They also announced that they'll be playing Hammerstein Ballroom the day after Thanksgiving. Ben Folds Five just barely sold it out, I'm wondering if Guster can fill it up as well?! + Friday: Evelyn Forever w/ Link & The Wag First time I saw Link, and he rocked. His bass player Lana is very cute--I love seeing a woman in a dress playing bass. Link's also the uncle of Jarrett Randazzo, frontman for the amazing pop band Tocar (see www.mp3.com/tocar). Evelyn Forever was fun as always, and I ran into lots of cool people that night, including my friend Laura, the MTV VJ wannabe and Karaoke bitch. + Saturday: Alanis & Tori I had really high expectations for this, and somehow my friend Eric scored us THIRD row seats...it was just "eh." I've seen Tori way better before, and the fans there were totally lame. Alanis' fans seemed to be either white trash or teeny boppers. Also, Alanis is surprisingly short in person, and she can't dance worth a damn. On stage, she looks like of like a hyper six year-old with broken arms. I laughed when she tripped over her mic cable and fell down (only because she didn't get hurt.) On the plus side, Tori played four songs from her new album, and they sound very much in the vein of her FtCH stuff. I like it. + Sunday: Rufus Wainwright This was the major closer to the weekend...Rufus playing a club with a capacity of 199 in New York City. He was trying out all sorts of new material BEFORE going into the studio, which I thought was a pretty cool idea. Most of it sounds VERY laid back, more emphasizing his voice than the piano or backing band. He closed the night with an encore of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow,' joined by his mother and sister. I was duly satisfied, this being the second time in recent weeks that I saw a band choose that cover--the first being Flaming Lips, joined by Lou Barlow and Robyn Hitchcock. All righty...that's that for now. Sorry to take up so much space...but now you see why I haven't been online!! :-) - - Leigh 13 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 14:03:34 -0400 From: shirak@umich.edu Subject: Redheaded Musicians.... MMMMmmmmm Let's not forget Kim Fox, who I fell in love with from the first time I got to see BFF live. First time I met Sandi, too! I loved her CD, but it didn't go big. Ah well. Anyway, guess what I saw on 120 Minutes last night? The video for "Don't Change Your Plans." I loved it. MTV can live for now, but only until I catch them playing Tom Green's video again. Oh yeah, a general advisory to all. I am officially declaring it okay to listen to Brick again. Enough time has passed so the stigma of overplaying should have worn off. There may still be some residual backlask upon first hearing it, but just settle back, and ride it out. You'll be glad you did. Laters! Robbie Faulks- I gave him time, a couple weeks in fact, and I just feel disgust each time I've heard them. But thats just me, my opinion, my personal taste, you are all welcome to disagree or whatever, but I did give him time. I just don't dig it. Jump Little Children- Wow, another convert! I was converted this summer when I stayed with Ginger and I heard her CD. It was so good that I bought it a few days later at a store in Chapel Hill and one night I was chatting with John Aramini online, and we started talking about it... it made me dig out the CD, and I love it more and more each time I hear it. I even converted my roomate!! Anyway. good times. Rufus-oh, brings back memories of when I was in NYC and saw Jude play this tiny little club! I was there with Rey and a buncha people from the Jude list, and it was the coolest thing. Martha Wainwright opened for Jude, and lo and behold, guess who sat next to Rey and I? Rufus's mother... who was later joined by the great Rufus!! So I talked to him like a normal person, even though inside I was dying because not only is he a musical genius, but he is also the sexiest man alive... *sigh* I'm ok. Evelyn Forever - YAY POWERPOP! My genre of preference, and I've gotten to the point that I'm fairly knowelgeable, and get this... my name is thrown around in powerpop circles! Not only do I know about the bands, but the bands/labels/etc know about me! woohoo! =-) I'll be like a Powerpop Goddess, right Ginger? You can still keep your title that way. ;-) Anyway, Evelyn Forever is a fantastic powerpop band and how lucky are you to see them. And I just spent 135 bucks to go see a whole bunch of concerts, etc at the UA! I'm going to see Itzhak Perlman, Chicago The Musical, Tap Dogs, Riverdance, and Miss Saigon! I'm so excited, I bought a concert series. Yay me! I'm so cultured. I'm going by myself because I have enough self esteem to be seen at a major cultural event by myself. Well, that and the fact that I really want to go and get good seats, and I didn't have anyone lined up to go with me.
