Opened with Verbow in the midwest!!!! Kim Fox was super, super, super nice. And she had a really cute violin player, and she's not so bad herself. Her guitar player also looked amazingly like E from the eels. Weird. Anyway the album is good, it's on dreamworks, and you can usually find it used pretty easily. I compare it to Liz Phair doing a piano pop album. I do like Verbow too, as I am a sucker for anything with a cello. But it's pretty straight forward rock, almost a touch of grunge, plus cello. I like it. It's produced by Bob Mould, and you can hear some Sugar in their music as well. I thought Robbie Fulks was good live, but I don't think I would buy his stuff. It was more like, "Hmmm...this guys entertaining enough to not make me want to boo him off stage." He was funny, and played off the token frat-boy element in the crowd quite well. Okay. Peace out. Leigh, Robbie Fulks is actually a more traditional country artist than almost anyone else on the scene today. The reason there are elements of alternative, rock, hot jazz, and everything else in his music is that all those American styles are so closely related they should all be from Mississippi...well, they are, actually! Check out his song about Nashville from South Mouth (I'm guessing it's called "F*ck This Town", though I never labeled my tape>:-{) and you'll hear him whinge about the same things we all hate about "country" music...the cheese factor, the pseudo-masculinity, and just the fakeositudeidness (<---made that up on the spot!). But if you go back and check out some classic country/western swing artists (Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys, even David Allen Coe), you'll see that they were all sharing elements of style w/rock, jazz, swing, and R&B. Rant: This is the trouble w/categorizing music...none of the categories fit! They're arbitrary attempts to make life easier for radio stations, record stores, Billboard, and the rest of the industry, but not for the listener. What you end up w/is a completely FECKED system that lumps Robbie Fulks in w/Garth Brooks (keeping noncountry listeners from ever giving him a chance), Ben Folds Five w/Ace of Base, Spearhead w/Puff (the Magic) Daddy, and Medeski Martin & Wood w/Kenny G! Jes' remember, kiddies, keep an open mind, actively seek out music you like regardless of the industry-imposed category, and when in doubt ask Onkle Markus:-)!!! _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web.
