Even though I've been absent from the RF pages, I have been reading them, I promise! I didn't want to post from my stupid AOL address because Erik would yell at me. :-( So now I'm back in Cleveland, after a very boring summer, and have found myself in the midst of quite a lot of exciting things. I love school. This summer I have found a particular love for the band "Old 97's". "Too Far to Care" and "Fight Songs" are both highly excellent rockabilly (kind of) style albums full up to the brim with phenomenal lyricism and charm. Definitely check it out. (Sorry for all the plugs, but it's been a musically enlightening time!) Also, my friend Jann Klose has finally put out his next CD, "The Strangest Thing". It's f-ing awesome. It's kind of jazzy and laid-back, but completely musical and very well done. Killer vox. Killer. (Buy it! It's only $11! ) It's the kind of thing Jeff Buckley / Rufus Wainwright lovers would really dig. Plus, Jann is quite possibly one of the coolest people ever. He deserves a win. (Go team!) Other than that, I'm having my first public reading on Sept 17th, which I'm already nervous about. Shouts-out to Anne, Marcus, Tina, Erik, Matthew, Eric, and all you other crazy cats. You know who you are. I'll be back. - -c ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 10:48:16 -0400 From: "Griffith, Brian" Subject: Talk about Major Suckage Leigh, I would love to go to the Baltimore show -- especially if G. Love is opening. I was all hyped for it too ............. until I remembered I am going to be on vacation that weekend -- with my family (shreik). Talk about major suckage. Hopefully, they will add some other nearby dates which we can catch. Until then, have fun my man, and tell us all about it. Brian ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 13:26:22 -0400 From: "Leigh 13" Subject: Where are they now? About a month ago, I remember Anne writing about how she was getting some of Robbie Fulks' albums. I don't think she ever got back to us on how she liked them though! I'm bringing this up because lately I've been listening to Let's Kill Saturday Night, and it's such a great album! I think it's about as close to country as I can take, but it stays enough on the rock/alternative side of the tracks to work for me. To anyone who dismisses Fulks as country right off the bat, I challenge you to listen to 'Caroline' and tell me you don't dig it. Continuing along with other former BFF tour-mates, I picked up an import of the new Travis CD, The Man Who. I absolutely adored their debut, Good Feeling, and I was a little shocked to see that they seem to have turned a different direction with the new album. It's no longer straight-up knock-yer-socks-off pop rock, but instead moves along the lines of something more like Radiohead. With matching white packaging, it looks real swell right next to OK Computer, and it sounds damn good too. I picked up a used copy of the Verbow album a while back, but I still haven't gotten around to listening to it. Should I bother? Now, I know we have plenty of Fleming & John and Jude fans in the house, but does anyone listen to any other bands that have toured with Ben Folds Five? How about Komeda? Venus Flytrap Girls? Anyone else? - - Leigh 13 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 14:01:57 -0500 (EST) From: Katy Demcak Subject: Verbow Kint Re: verbow My friend picked up a used copy of the Verbow album like you did after we saw them and travis open for Ben Folds Five in October of 1997. Neither he nor I really got into the album at all, although we liked the track Fan Club for the great line: "I put your sticker on my Trapper Keeper." But I have to say, the rest of the album didn't do much for me. In other news, I am now officially and gainfully employed. I start as editorial assistant of Aquent Magazine in a week and a half. woo hoo! xoxo, Katy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 17:12:53 -0700 (MST) From: Stacy L Flatt Subject: Re: Where are they now? Travis- LOVE THEM!!! But I havent heard their new one yet. Robbie Faulks- Saw them with Ben Folds Five, HATED THEM. So I thought ok, let me give them another try, perhaps I was just too excited and impatient to see BFF so I couldn't appriciate them. So I got the CD from KAMP, listened to it, plkayed it on my show, and still hated it. And its not cuz I don't dig the alt.country or americana rock stuff, cuz like Carrie, I LOVE the Old 97s and saw them live and loved it, I LOVE Grant Lee Buffalo, I LOVE Wilco. Hell, you might kill me for saying this, but some of the songs that play at the place where I work (steakhouse, ergo country music) aren't half bad. But Robbie Falks? Bleh. Komeda- LOVE them, its quirky, its fun, its swedish lounge pop. At least I think they are swedish? F&J- LOVE them Jude- LOVE him. who else has toured with them? stacy *************************************************(************** Stacy Flatt 520.621.1111 (office 10-11am and 12-1pm Pacific Assistant Director Eat to the Beat Concerts University of Arizona **************************************************************** ------------------------------ End of The Rockford Files V2 #242 *********************************
