There is something about the way Mark's voice blends with the bass and the wailing baritone sax which always leaves me a little weak in the knees. I only saw Morphine twice live -- once by themselves and once at guitar-free HORDE tour in 1997 (Hey, look!!! I found a Ben Folds connection after all) - -- but each time I was amazed by how powerful this trio could be. Anne, thank you for posting this information. I think you are correct about the lack of coverage. I had heard nothing about it until I read your post. What's really weird is that on Monday while I was driving back to DC from Cincinnati, I had an uncontrollable urge to listen to Morphine. So for 6 hours of the 9 hour drive, I was jamming to Cure for Pain and Like Swimming - -- two of my favorite albums. Anyway, this is truly a sad week in the music world, and I will be in mourning for the foreseeable future. Brian Someday, there'll be a Cure for Pain. That's the day, I'll throw my drugs away. -- Mark Sandman (1952-1999) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Jul 1999 12:22:39 PDT From: Markus Kamp Subject: Wow! From the Mountain's bulletin board (http://www.kmtt.com/nonframes/mboardlow/index.shtml): >>URGENT/SY GEAR STOLEN! july 4 1999 LA/Orange County Hello all, this is Lee from Sonic Youth here, we have had a fucked up situation come down on us over this last night--a brand new Ryder truck parked at a Ramada Inn in Orange County with ALL OF OUR GEAR IN IT was STOLEN! All of our guitars, tools, amplifiers, drums, synth -- EVERYTHING. We are fucked, both for the show tonight at the "This Ain't No Picnic" here in Orange Co., and for shows upcoming this week in Austin and Santa Fe. Our guitars are all mostly older and either very modified and/or fucked up/beat up. They are unmistakably ours, as are some of the amps, including my own 60s Fender Concert with the red/blue/yellow "Jasper Johns-style" target on it. We are asking ANYONE with ANY INFORMATION about this to get in touch with us as soon as possible by calling our man Aaron Blitzstein in New York City at 212.343.2314, or via email to "Mascaras66@aol.com". Call collect if you want to. Please no pranks, all, this is really serious--all the gear we've used to write our last few LPs worth of stuff, instruments used for songs old and new which if truly lost will mean those songs will be lost forever. Help us out if you can, there will be a reward for any info, I'm sure. All our road cases, etc, are fully marked up with our name on them, the gtrs are so unusual that they won't really be too hard to mistake. ANY info at all will be appreciated. If the thieves themselves read this, I'm sure we'd rather buy the stuff back from you than lose it forever (you fukkerz). here are some descriptions of gear: drums: green satin flame 60s Gretch kit (w "paisley" glow in dark kik head Fender ToneMaster head and 4x12 cabinet Fender blackface Concert (4x10) w "Target design" spraypainted on front PeeVey RoadMaster Head Marshal 4x12 cab Mesa Boogie 400+ bass head/4x10 cab/18" cab Fender Bassman head (two!)/ 2x12 fender cab Fender presicion Bass Gibson Les Paul Jr w snoopy sticker Fender Jazzmasters and Jaguars--lots of 'em, mostly modified to hell (orig electronix pulled, diff p/u's etc) and usually way beat up. Yes I love this movie, I saw the sneak preview a couple months ago and it was sooooo funny. Go see it if the premise of a buncha high school guys making a pack to have sex before the end of the school year type humour appeals to yo. It reminds me of Can't HArdly Wait except WAAY beter. Now the point of the email. I am in Chapel Hil right now enjoying the Hostpitally of Sandi and Ginger and a friend of ours named Jason. THe city is beautiful, and I will consider moving here when I am done ith college. The people are nice, very nice. I've done the BFF tour seeing the houses, the streets, the old hardback cafe... plus just having fun. Monday I head up to NYC. Before CH I was in Baltimore and DC for the 4th and had a great time. I'll send more email updates as I have time and feel like sending them. =-) Stacy ------------------------------ End of The Rockford Files V2 #204 *********************************
