Could we all just pause a moment to honor the passing of a great musician & a true believer in supporting the local music scene? Mark Sandman, 1952 - 1999 I'm not sure how heavily this is getting covered in other areas of the country... so if you'd like the details, here they are. Mark Sandman, lead singer and songwriter of Morphine, died onstage of a massive heartattack over the weekend. Morphine was playing a three-day festival outside of Rome. They were two songs into their set when Mark collapsed and an ambulance was called. He died en route to the hospital. Friends and family were shocked by his death as he had no known heart problems (his only vice was smoking). The Boston/Cambridge music scene is in mourning -- no matter how successful Mark became, he never forgot his roots. By all accounts, he could be counted on to get up and jam anywhere, anytime. All you needed to do was ask and he'd be happy to sit in. Oh, and in case you need to know the Bentent quotient for this post: Ben Folds Five: a trio w/out a guitar & w/ high musicianship. Morphine: a trio w/out a guitar & w/ high musicianship. So there. It's funny... when I was just out in Seattle, Markus's housemate & bandmate Krys asked me if I had ever seen Morphine at a small club. I hadn't, but I had seen them twice at larger shows -- once at a free FNX show at the Hatch Shell in '96 and then again on the HORDE tour in '97. In fact, Mark Sandman was standing about five people away from me during the BFF's set at said HORDE. <----- (more bentent) Plus, don't I recall a thread on the MA where Mark Sandman was rumored to be Le Sledge's papa? <----- (new, improved bentent) So there. Anyway. Just thought I would do my duty as a music lover near Boston and report on his untimely passing. Mark Sandman was 46 years young. Moving on. Court-nay: I believe that this makes your decision easier. Not in a good way, of course, but it makes it easier nonetheless. And FYI... I was only in Portland for about 30 hours... I spent much more of my time in Seattle (which was cool, because I had been to Portland before, but I had never been to Seattle). Elisabeth: Thanks for the heads-up on the Ben Lee/Beth Orton show at the Hatch. I believe I will be able to check that out. Markus: Thanks for saying that I am "a helluva gal"! Your check is in the mail... And I am happy that you survived the earthquake... :) Spencer: I agree... let's all get together for a big blowout! how about the end of summer? Didn't you say something about a beach house??? I'll bring the Vermont brews, Markus can bring the Northwest brews... and you can bring the martini makin's. Anyone else joining us? *grin* Take care, all. Yours, always. - -Anne _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. It was immensley better than Austin Powers 2, for example. My god, I was laughing! And it was the type of laughing where you sound stupid because youre laughing so hard. It was a really funny movie with a very likeable cast, and it was fairly similar to stuff Ive experienced in high school. Except there were no boys like Finch there, alas. (sorry, crush!) I am definetly the target demographic for this film, but I really liked it. It had heart! i cannot function nor sleep in 100 degee weather. send me to the northwest! Anne, you should check out the comedy studio in harvard square. Its small and intimate and very funny (sorry, weird description) and conan obrian is going to be there this weekend! ~Elisabeth "I cant get no sleep-makin' love to my girl in the heat-tearin' off tights with my teeth" _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web.
