What a gal! (Not for leavin', but jes' 'cause she's a helluva gal!) We had a great time & I'm happy to have finally spent some time w/a Fjordian. (Note: While I have met Courtney before, it was @ a concert, so we spent about 4 hours together in a loud, smoky club...hardly gettin-ta-know-each-other circumstances.) I'm sure Anne will ranneble(tm) about the details, but we pillaged both Portland and Seattle; drank; saw an incredible show by David Garza; drank; saw 2 inspired shows by Joseph Arthur and his safety-pinned package; saw a mediocre show of pretention by Three Fish; drank; saw a Chinook/Sockeye/Steelhead run (rather, saw a whole bunch of them swim); drank; drove around aimlessly; drank; stayed in 2 really cool hotels (one of which, the Edmond Meany in Seattle's university district, you all must visit sometime); drank; decided I have Ethan Embry's haircut (hope he doesn't want it back anytime soon); drank; ate some delish Tanzanian, Greek, and Pacific NW cuisine; drank; stunk @ pool; and drank. Mtv will soon be airing the entire weekend for your viewing pleasure. We now return you to our regularly scheduled Files. Well, there are a multitude of reasons, but I think you'd be interested in this one. We are moving into our new apartment, and I had to work. So while I was at work, he unpacked all his stuff. I get home from work and on my bed there is an article about Ben Folds Five. I thought that was pretty cool, but as if it wasn't cool enough, it was back from 95 when Self Titled first came out. I was amazing first of all that he saved it that long. 2nd of all, if he saved it that long, it must have been pretty special to him (he is a big bff fan too) and yet even though it was something he thought was special, he still gave it to me. Very cool stuff. Its a great article from Request. Its a page and has a picture of the boys in odd clothes... I think Darren might be dressed up as a girl. It talks about their new album, their influences, the fact that they don't have a guitar. I love it. You will hear more about my best friend Nate, I am sure of it. He is my best friend and favorite person in all the world, and we just moved into an apartment together... which my friend Dave says is just the right premise for a sitcom. We shall see. So on Saturday morning, I leave for my vacation to the land out east. I'll be in Baltimore, Maryland; Washington DC; Chapel Hill, NC; New Jersey just outside of Philly; and New York City. I'll be gone until the 25th, and I plan on making the aquantence of quite a few fjordians as well as seeing some for the 2nd time. So, anyone wanna tell me some cool stuff to see, cool concerts to go to, or if they are going to be in the area and want to hang out for a bit? Oh! I had a Ben-Dream. Hopefully Anne will get to give her analysis of it... Anyone else care to take a shot? So I was on my trip and Ben Folds Five was going to play in either Baltimore or DC. I forget. Of course I was going to go, and I was going to meet my friend Kevin there. The concert isn't til late, but I still get there at 5 so I can secure the perfect spot. So I see some tshirts for sale, and I buy the few I don't already own. I bond with some other fans there. But I don't see Kevin anywhere. He was there when we bought the tix but then disappeard. Well, the opening band comes out... and get this. It is Menundo. I can tell you what that means... too much Ricky Martin! haha! So they do like half a song and then BFF comes out. They are setting up their own stuff, so it was kinda odd, but Ben sees me and my sister (suddenly she was there) and recognizes us and starts talking to me. So we are talking, and I tell him how I was supposed to meet Kevin there, but he has disappeard. Then I tell Ben that Kevin likes them well enough, but isn't too fond of the new album, and likes it best when they stick to the 3 instruments. He is a huge fan of self titled. So then Ben and I launch into this whole discussion about the band, its directoin, influences, etc etc, we just ran the gammut. And Ben was quite impressed with me. Then Ben has to go cuz the stage is done being set up and its time to start the show. I see Kevin in the crowd, I go and get him and bring him up to where I was, and we watch the Ben Folds Five show from the perfect spot. And that was my dream. ok c'est tout for now. stacy The best things in life don't make any sense -Odds "The Best Things" Stacy Lynn stacyf@u.arizona.edu http://www.u.arizona.edu/~stacyf icq: 7641939 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Jul 1999 11:36:58 -0700 From: Stacy Lynn Subject: review of Messner on the web Hey all you guys... here is a review I stumbled apon. Its a review of the latest Ben Folds Five masterpiece and there is also a review of the Owsley album I often sing praises of. The Owsley review... I don't like it actually, he spends too much time talking about Amy Grant and Shania Twain, but I think he likes the Owsley album... The bff review is quite odd as well... but its worth your read, even to just wonder why she hates "that beastie boys style rap" on NBP... She liked the new album, though. stacy The best things in life don't make any sense -Odds "The Best Things" Stacy Lynn stacyf@u.arizona.edu http://www.u.arizona.edu/~stacyf icq: 7641939 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Jul 1999 17:00:06 EDT From: Anne Sawyer Subject: She's dressed in yellow... ...She says "Hello, Come sit next to me, you fine fellow." You run over there without a second to lose... And what comes next? Hey, bust a move. You want it? You got it. You want the synopsis of my trip to Seattle? Well, you probably already got it from Markus. But while I am still experiencing the euphoria* I thought I would post as well. Forgive me if I end up annebling all over the place... I am running on about an hour of sleep... and you know what that can do to me. If you *can't* remember what lack of sleep does to me... check out the RF archives for posts on or about February 17, 1998. WARNING: I AM SURE THIS WILL BE A LONG, INANE** MESSAGE -- YOU MAY WANT TO SCROLL ON BY*** First things first. Markus is the best god damn host ever. (God damn, I said god damn.) Period. I will brook no argument on that one. I'd like to thank him publicly (well, as publicly as I am able... I'd thank him over the PA here at work, but since no one knows from Markus Kamp here... it would be strange to say the least.) In no particular order, here are Anne's Memories of... (Markusian drumroll please)... ^^^ConBENtion '99: The NxNW Experience^^^ - - Experienced a lot of Seattle rain. Weather was not the greatest (thanks for feeling for me, Court-nay!) but it was what I pictured the NW to be. So no real loss... - - Saw Mummery at a small venue called RainDance. Now, y'all should remember that name. Not thatr they will be famous in their own right... but because they will most likely be interviewed on the future "Behind The Music: Sinforosa****" - - Learned a few new phrases: "kicky" and "*right* on" being two of them. - - Experienced Sinforosa up close & personal. I got the stories behind the songs, sat in the middle of a rehearsal, listened to Markus and Derek jam, etc. - - Made fun the older, gnarlier Sammyhagaresque lead singer and the Danacarveyiffic drummer for Three Fish. Laughed really hard. - - Discussed the Catholic-School-Girl-Receiving-Communion syndrome. - - Got attacked by a small bird while waiting in line at the David Garza show. Really. - - Bought a book of plays by women, about women at a used book store. The last play? None other than Alice Childress's "Wine in the Wilderness"! <--- [Look Ma! Bentent!] Excellent play. - - Discovered that even pseudo-lesbians dig Sinforosa. - - Worked the National PTA show in Portland. - - Met the drummer for David Garza. (Didn't get to meet the bassist. *sigh* Apparently, it wasn't yet time for me to have his Love Child.) - - Sang BeFeF songs on the drive up from Portland... me attempting to sing Ben's parts and Markus singing backup/harmony. Why? Because I can't harmonize. Can't sing neither, but that didn't stop me. <--- [Psst! More bentent, right up there!] - - Rocked out to Joseph Arthur (twice) & David Garza. - - Played pool with Wee Winsome and her beau... *very* nice people. - - Was impressed by the Locks, the Falls, the Floating Bridges, the scenery & greenery, Alki Beach, Markus's cooking*****, East African food, Mac & Jack's Amber (& another beer whose name escapes me). - - Expanded my musical mind. I now need to purchase CDs by Terry Bozzio, Robbie Fulks, Southern Culture on the Skids (among others). - - Observed some focus groups in Seattle. - - Fell in love with Sinforosa all over again. These are some of the coolest people I've ever met (Traci, Krys, Derek and Markus). Excellent musicians, excellent people. Anything at all I can do for them, I will. And... I know I'm forgetting stuff. Plus this post is getting long and I'm still hoping not to have to split it up. So I'm-a signing off. In closing; Thank you, Markus... for a wicked good time. I pronounce ConBENtion '99: The NxNW Experience to be a resounding success. Very tired. Must sleep. Cya! - -Anne * Well, it's either euphoria or a combination of lack of sleep and jet lag... ** Inanne? *** Music and lyrics by Burt Bacharach, vocals by Dionne Warwick. **** "... and when we come back. Derek battles a dangerous gluten allergy. Later, Sinforosa experiences the dark side of success after their wildly successful 2002 East Coast Tour Divorce." ***** Mmmmmmm... Salmon. Mmmmmmm...
