So any and all of you all that saw Ben Folds Five in DC, I hate you all, in the most loving sort of way. j/k I'm just trying to deal with my jealousy the best I can. =-) But, let me just say that I'll be going to some good concerts... Fountains of Wayne, Imperial Teen, and Owsley in Baltimore on the 8th, as well as on the 10th in Boston (hopefully, that one is yet to be determined, but I'm crossing my fingers!).....and lets just say that I've been to some good concerts. Here are the reviews. The first was Cockeyed Ghost on the 18th and 19th of june, and the other was the push stars and better than ezra tonight, the 22nd. Cockeyed Ghost - For those of you unfamiliar with this band, they are a fantastic band out of LA. Their newest album is called "The Scapegoat Factory" and they are on the big deal label. Talk about a great powerpop album... anyway, I had been in touch with Adam for some time now, emailing back and forth, chatting with him, so when he told me he'd be playing Tucson and Phoenix, I was quite the happy girl. He played Tucson on the 18th, and it was wonderful. A 21+ show and I was able to now get in. :) God bless 21st birthdays. :) So I hung out with Adam before the show, and then they played their set. It was a great set, a They Might Be Giants cover (James K Polk) was played early on, and most the set was from thrie new album with a couple old songs tossed in for variety. They closed with "Good Vibrations" which was pretty cool. It seemed all too short for me. After the show, the friend I had brought along was converted and bought the album. We hung out a bit after the show, and all was cool. The next day, I drove up to phx for their 2nd show. I took a different friend with me this time. A great band called Propeller was the 1st band and I was much impressed. Then Cockeyed Ghost played, a simliar set to the one in Tucson. I loved it, as did my friend who bought a cd. Adam is just a fantasic person, very talented and very fun to boot. Plus, he works harder than anyone I know to help his band, a very admireable quality. So that was a cool weekend. I strongly urge everyone to see them when they are nearby, and defnately pick up The Scapegoat Factory. Full of harmonies, great hooks, piano driven songs as well as guitar ones... good stuff, go buy it. Then today I saw The Push Stars and Better Than Ezra. They came to Tucson!!! Amazing!!! The push stars were 1st, anyone know anything about this band? Well, they were just so fantastic, I was really blown away, and I couldn't believe I hadn't heard of them before. Great vocals, strong melodies, catchy guitar riffs, plus they were just exelent on stage. Great with the crowd and fun to watch. I was hooked and went to buy their cd at the little table. I asked them how they were doing on soundscan and there was a ladie sitting there who asked me if I worked for a label, and how I knew about soundscan. I told her my speil about how I want to work in the industry and have experience working with bands, lables, promotions, and college radio. She told me about a possible internship with a major label that was opening up, and gave me her card. Rock over london, rock on chicago. I was happy. Better Than Ezra then took the stage. Frigging amazing, man. Really good stuff. I was of course familiar with their old singles, and their new CD that they are promoting, while I do not own it, I reviewed it for KAMP and loved it, so I knew most of the songs they played. They played all the old faves plus plenty off the new album, and ladies, that Kevin (lead) is not only amazing to look at, but he has a fantastic voice that the albums just don't do it justice. At one point, he went into the crowd and sampled people yelling their names and made up a song about it, it was soo funny. Really cool. The lights were amazing, the stage set up, the whole thing, very showman like, very good. Not only a good band to listen to, but fantasically entertaining to watch. After the show I nabbed a setlist (3 for 3!) and it goes like this: ONe More Murder Good Like it like that Allison foley king of new orleans at the stars live again post moderns rosealia under you this time of year in the blood - ---- happy day mama desperately wanting The encore was fantastic, incredible... It really made me feel. Good good shyte. After the show, I went out back like the freak that I am. I got talked to the Push Stars for some length actually. They are such nice nice guys, you should really see them if you get a chance. They ran back and got me a poster for free just cuz I took the time to tell them how much I loved their set. :) They signed all kinds of stuff for me too, and they will be back in town with Julian Lennon. I am all over that. I talked to them about how I want to own a label or work in promotions or do A&R, and told them about what experience I have now, and they were just so cool, telling me stories about this and that, and wishing me luck. Very nice people. Then I met Better Than Ezra minus Kevin. I was bummed about not seeing him, but I talked to the other 2 guys who were really really nice. I had heard not so nice things about them, but if what I saw was anything close to typical, I dnt see how anyone wouldn't like them as people. So I talked to them for a while too, and they were all cool. They signed my setlist. I grabbed Tom (the bassist)'s setlist, btw. It has 4s and 5s written by the songs so that the stage guy knew to hand him his 4 string or 5 string. I guess that was it. It was the Push Kings last date with BTE, so definately definately try and catch TPK when they come to your area. As far as BTE, it was an amazing performance, and I know they'll still be touriung for a while (OK is the next stop) so if their music darns your socks, go see them and you not be disappointed, even if you only know the radio singles. You will leave the concert a fan. This is Stacy, reporting from the oft forgotten land of Tucson, Arizona. Now back to your regularily schedualed programming.
