DC Re: DC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 14:09:54 -0400 From: "Griffith, Brian" Subject: DC ConBENtion Last night at the 9:30 Club was truly amazing. First of all, it was great to meet everyone who came into town (I apologize if I forget anyone I am a little hungover -- Dan; Leigh; Ginger -- thanks for the passes, you're the best; Ray; Lisa; Willie; and, of course, all of the Susans, Susies, Suzannes, Susannas, etc.). Thanks to Ginger, we got backstage passes, but, unfortunately, the band didn't come out. However, while the last of us were waiting for a cab, Ben came out to talk to a small crowd of twenty or so. Fortunately, Ray had a camera, and Leigh, Dan, Lisa, Ray, and I got a picture with Ben. Ben was very accomadating to those of us still meandering around at that late hour; he's a great guy. Anyway, the show, my eighth, started with an incredible set by Jude. I had heard very little of Jude before last night, by their second song I was a fan. Jude opened with You Mama You which blew me away. They also played Rick James (of course), The Asshole Song, Brad and Susie, Out of LA, I'm Sorry Now and few others that I don't know. Ben even came out and jammed with the band -- forgive me 'cos I don't remember which song it was, but I'm sure someone can help me out here. Overall, a very impressive set. When the boys trotted onto the stage, everyone could feel the electricity. The club was packed, and the crowd was in a frenzy. I knew it was going to be a big night, but I didn't know how big. It was by far the most energized and electric performance I have ever seen -- not just by Ben Folds Five, but by anybody!!!! They truly came to play. Maybe because Ben was sick the last two times in DC? Perhaps because the show was sold out and crowd was huge? Maybe they were just in that kind of mood? Who knows? But it was amazing!!!!! I don't want to get too carried away; I'm sure everyone else wants to tell their stories as well. So, here is the set list. 1. Don't Change Your Plans 2. Battle of Who Could Care Less 3. Army 4. Missing the War (Beautiful) 5. Magic (ditto) 6. Steven's Last Night 7. Redneck Past 8. Mess (Excellent) 9. Hospital Song (which shifted smoothly into......) 10. Philosophy 11. Video (How cool is that???) 12. Fair 13. Narcolepsy (I got goosebumps -- very powerful) 14. Best Imitation of Myself (Truly an old-school evening, I was shocked they played so many songs off the first album. After the song, a girl in the balcony screamed "I want to eat cake!" Meanwhile, our group shouted for Summer B. Ben quieted the crowd to hear what the girl in the balcony said. Nobody was quite sure what to make of her comment. So, Ben asked if someone could get her cake or cookies or something. Then he turned to our little group, and everyone was holding Dan and leigh's Summer B signs. Robert grabbed one and gave to Ben who read the directions. It was pretty damn funny. Best of all, they played the song.) 15. Where's Summer B? (Thanks to the efforts of Dan and Leigh) 16. I Want to Eat Cake Jam (Dedicated to the girl in the balcony) 17. Regrets 18. One Angry Dwarf (The band started to say goodnight and then "We can be happy underground" -- very cool) 19. Underground ENCORE 20. Jane 21. Song for the Dumped -- This is where all hell broke loose. After the normal craziness which accompanies this tune -- including all the solos and the piano cord scratching and sound effects, Ben climbed up the balcony on the side of the stage while Darren hammered away on the gong and Robert kept pounding the beat on his bass. Ben went in the backroom, and he came back with a plate of snacks and a bag of chips. He preceded to throw everything into the crowd. He went back and returned with boxes of cereal. He threw those to the crowd as well -- and Dan caught a box of Special K. For the finale, Ben returned with a bowl of fruit. He dumped the fruit of the crowd and then threw the bowl -- but still no cake!!!! Darren kept smashing the gong until he knocked it off the back of the riser. Then, Robert thanked the crowd and they walked off stage. It was a complete riot, absolutely, insanely, mind-numbingly cool!! What a show!!!!!!! If only they had played Last Polka. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 17:20:33 EDT From: Eriklyons1@aol.com Subject: !!!!!BREAKING NEWS!!!!!! Ben Folds Five's current tour has been POSTPONED. According to sources, Ben has been told by the doctor to perform no more shows this summer. Reason: EXHAUSTION. Well, no shyte. He is like a rag doll at gametime. So, they say to hold on to your tix, as the shows will be rescheduled, probably in October. This must suck big time for those getting pumped for the shows. So, and I hope I speak 4 all RFer's, our hearts go out to ya's. I know I would be upset. Welp, just wanted to give ya'll the skinny. Maybe, just maybe, it is a cover, and a good one. Maybe Ben is a daddy and wants to spend some time with the newborns! I know I would want to. But I'm already a daddy, so I am biased. But now I am taking up all that bandwidth again. Sorry. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 22:32:48 -0400 From: "Leigh 13" Subject: Worcester Show POSTPONED My apologies if this is old news, I'm on the digest mode. from http://www.blackstone-presents.com/: <> - - Leigh 13 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 22:46:54 -0500 From: "Matt Jacobs" Subject: Recording equiptment... Just bloody amazing. I've never in my time as a BFF fan seen a show like this one and I doubt I ever will because nothing, nothing I say, can top what happened on June 20. I won't give you the run-down on it because it's been done, but I'll add the following: Leigh and I were handing out flyers before the show. I was wearing a long-sleeved plaid shirt and he had some blue thing on. Yes, we were horrendously drunk. Yes, we were annoying and filming it. If you were either of those two girls who we were talking to about Creed on the subway, email me. That was good. :) I recorded the show. I'm not going to highly recommend my tape, since it features a lot of us (OK, me, on the last half) singing far too loud and horribly off-key, but it might be the best copy out there, scary as that is. The quality of the songs themselves is very good but there's a lot of background noise. On the interminable bus ride back to Syracuse, I listened to it, and it sounds better if you monkey with the GEQ, so I'm going to do that on my system when I record it onto other tapes. It's also missing the encores (sorry, ran out of tape and naturally forgot my spare back at the hotel, but thanks, Brian, for bringing my other one), but in my opinion SFTD wasn't as well-done as Amherst (after all, one cannot capture onto tape the sounds of a bag of chips flying through the club), so it's all good. And Army got cut off part way through. There, that's enough downplaying my tape. Now who wants a copy? :) Seriously, I don't mind trading for something if you're still interested. As far as the poster thing went, it happened. Goddamn, that was exciting. It wasn't like the set had been disappointing before then (Video and Best Imitation were nice surprises) but Summer B did it all. And Ben read my shouts-out to you all. So overall I was very happy. And as has been said before, Leigh, Suzy, Ginger, Amanda, Susan, Susan (Susannah? Suzanne? Snuzz?), Brian, Rey, and Lisa made it a great time for me. An absolutely divine time, if you will :) And I left my CD player in Suzy's car. And Leigh owes me a copy of the movie.
