Now, due to varied contacts, favors, and discreet meetings in hotel rooms that charge by the hour, I tried to get the inside scoop on the song before the CD came out. Then I went to Tower and they were previewing it. Didn't I feel used! Well, that's okay. I like being used. It makes me feel useful. ;) Anyway, I heard the track, and I can quite honestly say I'm disappointed. I can't quite put my finger on it, but the song was just lacking in..... something. Even Air, which was a song obviously written for commercial reasons, came off better than Leather Jacket does. Anyway, I say use caution buying this CD, unless you're a mega-Tori fan, and there's a new track by her on there too. Yeah Tori. Anyway, laters all! Hail Eris! I quite like it, but like Eric said, there is something about it that's missing. how are you all this fine morning? I am lovely. I'm going to go see Ben Lee on PI this afternoon, AND my friend went and schmoozed the manager over at the Mint, where he's playing next week that's 21+, and she's going to let us in. yay! and I get to see Cibo Matto tomorrow! I am so loving their new album... Spoon is very groovy. hard to imagine them at Lillith, but i think they'll give it a much needed shot in the arm. I saw the trailer for Summer of Sam and I cannot wait. that 4th of july weekend is going to be BUSY, yo. New episode of That 70's Show tonight. yay! okay, i have to go make some phone calls. byeee! ~Courtney The Sultraness of Swing "Isn't it interesting how the English countryside looks nothing like Southern California." - -- ************* ICQ: 24901402 AOL IM: CourtSpork Laugh until you wet yourself; read The Shrubbery. http://www.theshrubbery.com Listen to my radio show, "Swing and the Single Girl" every Tuesday at 9:30pm PDT live in Real Audio at http://kscr.usc.edu. ************* ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 14:29:18 -0400 From: "Dan Cohen" Subject: Re: Leather Jacket Really. When I first heard this song (actually, on an mp3 which Leigh made for me the day before Amherst, and two days later on the Army single CD itself), I thought it was actually one of the strongest B-sides the band's done. I really like the chorus part and the neat (and, admittedly, almost Air-like) opening chords. I don't see the abject commercialism in the song; it was written, I suppose, before the Kosovo relief situation was a big enough international deal to merit a tribute album...it's just a love song. I dig it. And the No Boundaries disc looks really strong as well. I'll probably be scraping up $13 or so tomorrow and heading down to get it. At any rate... I've asked this question before among other circles so I guess I'll give it a shot on the RF. I work at CompUSA. I had originally posted for this weekend off so that i could go to the DC show. I was told I could probably have it and then told that I couldn't. So I asked for that Sunday off and instead was given 6/13 and a veiled muttering about Father's Day being a big sale day and the need for 4 people at the Upgrade Desk. Now. They already screwed me with this Saturday, which was my good friend's prom I was to attend, so what shall I do if my manager tells me that I can't have Sunday off? Be a trouper and work it, be Mr. Assertive, grouse about it, or otherwise? I really do need some input. - -Dan - -----Original Message----- From: shirak@umich.edu To: rockford-files@smoe.org Date: Monday, June 14, 1999 1:26 PM Subject: Leather Jacket > Okay, my intrepid adventurers, as you may or may not know, there's >a benefit CD for the Kosovo refugees with our Beloved Boys doing a track >on there. Fleming & John played first. I had never heard anything of theirs except the crappy little audio samples they have at Cdnow. They were playing w/out their band, because Fleming said that they were arrested last time they were here and weren't allowed back. Oops! I really enjoyed them, and the crowd seemed to dig them too, for the most part. The two idiots behind me kept heckling them and I know thy had to have heard since we were right up front. Mind you, these were the same people who kept trying to cut in line, after i had been waiting for two hours, and who kept bumping up against me the *entire* time. I just held onto my place on the gate and said, rather crudley I know, "I swear, if *someone* doesn't get off my ass *right now*, I'm gonna cut a mean fart." Hey, it did the job. :) So anyway, Fleming was adorable and they sounded really great. They even came back and Felming sang the string parts in Plans and John played the horn. Ben Lee was next, and they were *really* good. I'm gettin' that CD ASAP. Ben jumped into the crowd (a good 4 feet down from the stage) and started crowd surfing *with* his guitar and his mic. The security guards were *none* too pleased with that. Not to mention I almost got kicked in the head. But it was cool. So after like, an hour, Ben and the boys came out and started with Plans. I won't even begin to describe how awesome it was. They actually seemed like they were having *fun* (wow), Robert shook his butt many a time, they talked to the audience and went nutso at the end, just like olden times. I was going pretty nutso myself. I mean, usually I'm pretty cool about these things, but here I was, like 2 feet from Robert's ass swaying in my face, and they sounded so awesome. I thought I was either gonna hyperventilate or cry. Ok, now I have a question. For the past 3 shows I've gone to, I've been pretty much up front. And every time it seems like Darren is staring *right* at me. I don't knoiw if it's because I'm in his line of sight, or what. But I swear, I made eye contact with him like 9 or 10 times last night. And my boyfriend and his brother were all like, "Damn, he kept looking at you." Now is this like, a common thing? I know he pretty much looks at everyone during the shows, but I was starting to feel weird (in a good way). I'm not bragging, just curious. So OK, after the show, we were gonna wait around until they came out, but our feet hurt *really* bad (I have about 12 blisters right now) and we were hungry and had to pee. So much for devotion. So we're walking to the parking garage, and as we walked past the Hotel Pickwick, I swear, Ben and Frally just pulled up, got out of a car, and went to go into the hotel. Of course, there were about 10 or 11 fans there, including us, so he had to shake hands and stuff. He was so cool about it. I mean, his pregnant wife is standing there in the freezing cold and fog, and he's just shootin the shit. Gotta love it. So that was a *very* pleasant surprise. Ok, so I'll stop now. Almost -- you *have to* *have to* *have to* go see The Blair Witch Project when it comes out in July. I saw it Saturday night in the pitch black around 3 a.m., and I almost peed myself. Oh. my. God. Scary stuff. OK, for real now, bye. Then I remembered, my 21st bday is in 2 days! I'd be able to get in all by myself! Well, except for the whole being in LA part. =-) So last night I saw Joan of Arc. I saw them before and I loved it, so I drove all the way up to phx by myself to see them play again. For anyone who is not familiar with this band, there are some ex- Cap'n Jazz people in here.. and Cap'n Jazz is like a legendary emo band. Well, so thesre are some ex capnjazz members, and its sorta emo music with some beeps, and clicks, and other computer noises ecvery once in a while... It is really really good. So I went to that, and after the show, I talked to the guys in the band, it was so cool, because I've got me a nice little crush on Tim Kinsella. Its funny, like I love Ben, Rob, and Darren, but there are so many girls who have crushes on them... I don't. But Tim Kinsella. =-) I tried telling them how great the show was, but my words were just so inadequet that I ended up just talking about how I saw them at CMJ in nyc. They were just the nicest, humblest bunch a guys. very cool stuff. stacy The best things in life don't make any sense -Odds "The Best Things" Stacy Lynn stacyf@u.arizona.edu http://www.u.arizona.edu/~stacyf icq: 7641939 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 14:41:29 -0700 From: Stacy Lynn Subject: Re: Leather Jacket This is the track that is an army b-side.
