Question for those in Australia Magic-tent Re: Magic-tent ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 13 May 1999 11:13:06 -0700 From: Stacy Lynn Subject: So I was at the CD store... Yes, its always a bad thing when I say that... as far as my wallet is concerned anyway. I guess as long as I have enough for rent and car... I can go without food. =-) So I was at the CD store, and lo and behold, what should I find used but XTC's Apple Venus Vol 1. Now I had already fallen in love with it when I found it at a listening booth at tower in phoenix and stood there listening to it in awe until my friend Eric (who I love dearly, but likes absolutely nothing musically that I like) dragged me away. So I bought it and I am now a much happier girl. This album is going to go on my fave lists very easily. Track 7, the controversial "Your Dictionary" is my favorite so far, although the 1st track gets me every time. Now, both Colin and Andy do singing, right? who sings what? What else did I find at the store... well, I finally got the live sloan 2 disk set. I'm very excited about this!! I got a really cool Posies EP thats really good, and a matthew sweet one too. Also 100% fun which I didn't have before but loved... I would play a track of it on my radio show every week. Lets see... A few days ago I went to the other CD store, and it was very cool. The guy there (Fred is his name - the general manager) used to live in Chapel Hill, NC and knows of my *ahem* obsession with Ben Folds Five. He was on the booking committee of a festival that Ben's old band Mojosha used to play, so Fred has some Mojosha memorabilia he is going to give me. Also, he got only one import of the Army single in and he saved it for me (awww, how special!) and he gave me a couple promo posters. I love nice people. Oh, and in the overstock bins, I was very dismayed to see, not one, but 2 used Owsley CDs. =-( And in the regular selectoin, yet another used Owsley CD. =-( What is wrong with these people? One of my favorite albums so far this year, and people have it and then get rid of it!!! Its just very sad. Well, I guess it means its cheaper for me to buy music... but still. You all know who Owsley is? Correct? I've extolled his virtues on this list before.. Sandi, Ginger - you've seen him right? And if nothing else, you should like Owsley before he was in a band (called The Semantics) with Ben Folds. I got the position of assistant director of a concert booking organization at the University of Arizona, so if any of y'all are in bands and want to do a college tour, I'd be the girl to talk to. =-) I am so excited, I've already got some stuff up my sleeve. Its going to be a fun year. I start working on it as soon as finals are over. This XTC cd is just blowing me away, I love all of it so much. I love the stereo effects in Easter Theatre (track 3) So Ben Folds Five is playing Phoenix on June 7. I cannot wait. Its odd though, cuz I've only seen them in clubs. This is almost like a concert hall type venue. Assigned seats... Its a round stage, with 360 degree seating, and the stage rotates. I was there for the warped tour last year and the warped tour had several stages all outside, and then you could go inside if you wanted to, and there was music on that stage as well. It was a great show and a lot of great bands were there, but it was Phoenix, Arizona... in June... 120 in the shade... and we were in the sun on blacktop for the mjority of the show... Thats enough to phase an arizona native-and I've only lived here for 6 years! Anyhoo... My radioshow is done for the semster... I'll see about getting one for the summer, and I'll let you know. Thank you to anyone who ever tuned in. I will let you know when my new show is this summer or next fall. I guess that is all for now. Since I know there are a number of you on this list from Australia, I thought I'd ask. A while ago I bought like 62 cds for the smashing price of 25 bucks..total. One of the CDs I bought, I bought for no real reason, just kinda threw it in with the other ones because it caught my eye-normally not a way to buy cds, but when you just fill up boxes with CDs, its a cool way to discover new bands. Turns out this band is from Australia. They are called The Blackeyed Susans, and looking through the liner notes, some of the people who played on the cd, their names seem familiar. An initial listening to this album, I can definately imaging myself digging it. Just wondered what you all thought about the band... if you knew of anything else about them... the cd is called mouth to mouth.
