Sorry this is so long, but I never post, and I wanted to make sure to get all the details. First up on Friday was Fleming & John. They played well, but I am not sure if the crowd was ready for them. The bassist and drummer ran onto the stage wearing the school's womens cross country uniforms -- it was quite humorous. Next up -- Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. They played for an hour and half, and they blew the crowd away. If you haven't seen BBVD live, you must. I don't care if you hate the swing revival or love it; BBVD puts on the best show I have ever seen. They are really amazing. This was the second time I saw them, and they were even better this time. BBVD Set List: Usual Intro; King of Swing; Comin' Back My Way (new song); Minnie the Moocher; Mr. Pinstrip Suit; Jump with My Baby; Maddest Kind of Love; Jumpin' Jack; I Wanna Be Like You; You and Me and the Bottle Makes Three; Swingin' on Nothing (another new song); So Long, Farewell, Goodbye (ending included a quick 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' interlude -- very cool); ENCORE: Go Daddy-O. Of course, Ben, Darren, and Robert were excellent as well, but BBVD stole the show. This is partly due to the fact that Ben had a cold, and partly due to the fact they were playing the new music which is far more mellow, but still excellent. Even though, the TUBORM music is more mellow, the boys still put on an energetic show. They played for about an hour and 45 minutes. Ben had hid usual piano as well as a Baby Grand -- they were keyboard to keyboard with Ben in the middle. Robert had his upright bass as well as a keyboard and organ for the more jazzy sections on TUBORM. Darren had a huge percussion set including tympanies for Magic. They also had an elaborate 70s-style light show -- violet circular lights with a fog machine during Narcolepsy and different lights around Darren for each drum head he hit during his solos. Very cool. BF5 set list: Narcolepsy; Battle of Who Could Less; Philosophy; Mess (even better live than on TUBORM); Steven's Last Night; Event Staff Improv Jam (in praise of the security staff -- very funny); Don't Change Your Plans (guitarist from F&J played the horn section -- I thought it would be BBVD, but it wasn't); Magic (very beautiful); Hospital; Army (same lead in as on TUBORM); Robert Takes a Leak/Sgt. Pepper Jam (Robert had to run to the bathroom, and, at first, Ben and Darren didn't know what to do. Then they started this hilarious jam about Robert's unfortunate problem.); Underground; Redneck Past (far better than on TUBORM); Fair; Jane (also better than on TUBORM); One Angry Dwarf; ENCORE: Lullaby (outstanding!); Emaline (slower than usual); and lastly, Song for the Dumped. Overall, an excellent show -- one the best I have ever seen. Best of all, it was free. For that, I have to give special thanks to my girl Keri for getting me into a students-only show at American University. It was my 7th BF5 concert dating back to '95. One of the odd things I noticed is that in every show I've seen (except for HORDE which was unusual in many ways) they have played Philosphy, Underground, Steven's Last Night, Song for the Dumped and Fair. They were playing the latter three live long before the Whatever album ever came out. Brian ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 15:06:01 +0100 From: Jay Reddick Subject: Woo-hoo! A hot tip for those without special access who want the album early: Wal-Mart. Apparently at the one here, the workers were too lazy to look up the actual release date and just put the new CDs out when they get their shipments. So I got my copy Friday night/Saturday morning. It kicks so much, I can't even begin....well, yes I can. It's much more mature, but it still has some of the humor of the last one. And Ben's piano playing is better and more intricate, as if that's possible. New faves: Lullabye, Don't Change Your Plans and Mess. Anyway, enough out of me. Just visit your local Wal-Mart. Take care, Jay ------------------------------ End of The Rockford Files V2 #137 *********************************
