Saw Elliott Smith tonight in Columbus, and let me say how excellent the show was. It was Elliott, a bass player named Sam(NOT COOMES OF QUASI) and Paulie the drummer. The set was quite short, but not lacking surprises and wonders. I had the joy of hearing FOUR new songs which I will highlight in the set list. The highlights of the show included the opening of the Ballad of Big Nothing from Either/Or in double time. Also, Bottle Up and Explode was wonderful. Love the drumming in that song! Independence Day was also wonderful. 14 songs in the initial set, then 3 in the first encore, and 2 in the second encore. The show went a little over an hour, not counting time backstage in between sets. The set went as follows(thanks to the sound-dude who hooked me up with a set list to add to my collection): Ballad of Big Nothing Independence Day(awesome bassline to compensate for loss of organ!) Speed Trials Bled White Son of Sam(NEW SONG! My favorite of the new songs) Waltz #2(XO) this was much better than I thought it would be. Cupid's Trick I can't Answer You Anymore(NEW SONG!) Baby Britain Stupidity Tries(NEW SONG!) Sweet Adeline(much faster than on the album, very nice) Flowers for Charlie(NEW SONG! Also quite nice) Pictures of Me(Much better than expected) Bottle Up And Explode(So nice!) Encore 1(Elliott by himself w/ Electric Guitar) Say Yes(as always beautiful) Oh Well, Okay(elliott cut off ending saying he was tired of singing it. Harvest Moon(yes a neil young cover that was absolutely beautiful. he said he was bored of singing his song and was going to cover someone. At this time someone yells Smells Like Teen Spirit, and evokes the only emotion from Elliott all show long, a chuckle.) Encore 2(Band back on stage) Christian Brothers Division Day(this was sooo good, and it seemed that many were hearing this for the first time. It's a b-side on the ballad of big nothing single, and a 7" on suicide squeeze and is my favorite elliott smith song. Soo good live.) This was a tough night for me, with opening day, push kings and elliott smith all on the same night, but I got to see plenty of baseball. The only thing I regret is having to miss the push kings. Damn I bet they're good live. Oh well, can't win them all. Seeing Poole(SpinART pop band) on Thurdsday. Should be great! Ciao, Ciao! John Set list collection: Money Mark, Sonic Youth, Ben Folds Five(2), Elliott Smith, Kim Fox, Caedmon's Call, Elf Power, Olivia Tremor Control, Pulsars, and Starflyer 59. Not bad, and I'm 3 for 3 in 1999 so far. Now just gotta get me some Built to Spill in May! "I still like to be in the dark. At least sometimes. It does me good, I think. I'm sure you have all heard about this new promo interview disc called "Truth & Rumors with Ben Folds Five." I have been trying to find a copy for a few days now, and out of sheer luck I found one at my favorite indie record store for just $3.99! Well, you all know how I love to share the wealth (well, you probably don't know that, but I do) so I posted the audio portion of the interview on my web page. You can listen to it at: http://members.tripod.com/ex13/bff/ You'll have the best luck with Internet Explorer 4 or 5 and Microsoft Media Player. The clips are encoded at 32kbps/22,050kHz mono using MPEG Layer-3 compression. They all have the .WAV extension (Tripod won't let me upload .mp3 files) and should play right from your browser with little trouble. - - Leigh 13 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Apr 1999 05:41:29 GMT From: "tavia -" Subject: and then there were three foldses that is. just caught up with the news I have, having been out of the loop for such a loooooong time. back from the netherworld and i feel good. (like i knew that I would... hee hee) anyone here get the melissa virus? nasty girl that. been busy in my own little world, done a bit of teaching, had a bit of a social life (i could get used to this) as someone noted a while back: analyse this is pretty funny I enjoyed cruel intentions, crappy title but gellar has style, a fairly faithful remake of les liasons dangeroosuses (ah why bother spelling it right) avoid reading the origanal book of letters, very dull, none of the fun you get with teh screen adaptions saw the boy from oz, for free (hee hee love being a teacher o drama) very good balcony seats. saw long days's journey into night and it was long baby, but good. robin nevin is a good actress, props to the lady for I have maligned her much. john bell was a very charitable man, supporting those crappy boys so much and the maid was a girl I was in the same year in at uni. good golly and she is a lucky lass. brisbane is actually quite pretty I am learning. now that I know the dates of the shows in oz I can plan my movements... anyone want a guest in august? :D (my most charming smile) for surely I can lend a bit o matress or floor to those who come up to brissie. plus we can party afterward. leaving home is a good thing, oh yes. I have a great desire to party to bff music, but none of my non-net pals are into bff, this is a great sadness. waiting for the album like there's a fire in my belly for rip roaring music. which there is. kisses to you all taves now living inner city baby whoa yeah Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of The Rockford Files V2 #117 *********************************
