This should be interesting. I guess his dad asked him if he could prescribe some tranquilizers for his mother as she's already freaking out about family issues, and the guests aren't starting to arrive until today! Thank God we're staying in a hotel. I'll just sit there and smile and try to look like I'm a sweet, nice girl. I don't want to show them my true colors until after I marry into the family (hehehe). But we're getting there pretty early before the wedding. Why? My boyfriend had some delusional ideas when he booked our flight about spending some quality time with his family. Lucky me, I get to fly out the day after the wedding (Sunday), but the poor bastard is stuck there until next Wed. because of his wishful thinking. He's already fighting with his brother, and he hasn't even arrived in town! But we're going to get to check out Chapel Hill. I was so geeked like 2 months ago when we booked our flight. Then I find out that Ben is spending his time in Australia now. Oh well. I can't wait to see if there's any more BFF stuff in the record stores out there. Yeah, I know, it's probably just like any other college town, but I have my dreams. I figure getting questions from fans is far better than me dreaming up things that I want to know. Just because I'm the first to hear new music LAST, my copy of Deadly Faerie Tales is winging its way to my home with all alacrity. I finally get to bask in the glory that is Markus' drumming. Allah be praised, whoever that guy is. ;) Anyway, nothing interesting on the home front. I really have to get over this habit of helping out the women I was once in love with. Tonight, I get to help out a girl I'm madly in love with's boyfriend. Why? Because she volunteered me. Sometimes, being born without the asshole gene really sucks. Anyway, that's all from me. No more lack of posting from you guys! I don't care if it's just inane chatter (like most of my posts,) tell me something! And I'm still waiting for Anne to make me her boy-toy! ;) Laters all! ERIC ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Mar 1999 06:42:14 -0700 From: Stacy Lynn Subject: innane chatter You want innane chatter, you will get innane chatter. I just like the sound of that. Innane Chatter. Kinda like the word psuedo, esp when paired with sorta. "My psuedo-sorta boyfriend" or what have you. Sandi, Ginger, the next time you see Jason, say that. Psuedo-sorta. He'll know who you've been talking to. =-) Lets see... How about some musical quotes from our musical friends? "The song, "It might as well be you" was written while riding a butcher's bike through the streets of Northampton in 1976. To this day the squeak of the saddle springs and the rattle of the heavily laden iron basket, sausage links flapping, are clear in my memory and discernible in the rhythm of the piece itself. " Justin Currie - Del Amitri "Music to me is so divine. It is the most amazing form of expression that I can think of because it's immediate and it doesn't require anything but talent. It doesn't require writing it down, filming it, painting it, you know. You just play it and it's so incredibly communicative and can be so incredibly personal and that's beautiful to me. That's what I'm trying to tap into" Jason Falkner "I record in a house so you get outside sounds like birds and lawnmowers. That goes into the record." Beck "I have to work out to write a song because it's such an event. Sometimes it can take 10 days, sometimes a half hour." Brian Wilson "If you take a Fender bass, a piano or a Rhodes, and a mini-moog, you can make albums for a thousand years. You need nothing else. And instruments we hate? I hate accordion - I am French, so you can imagine - - and I hate saxaphones, except in jazz. Saxophone in pop music destroys the song like poison. You will never hear any saxophone on an Air album." Nicholas Godin - Air "This is a terrible thing to admit but I was looking for a very classic record with "Whatever and ever amen". Not in a way that makes it a great record but a record. Something like Van Morrison's Moondance or Fleetwood Mac's Rumors. Some standout album, where every song has impact and it sticks together." Ben Folds - Ben Folds Five "We just write the lyrics and we send them to this address in Nashville. They come back a couple of weeks later with a catchy tune attached to them." Adam Schlesinger - Fountains of Wayne There ya go. I know there are some Beck, FOW, and I think there might be one or two Ben Folds Five fans on this list. So hope you enjoyed that. CD purchases. Um, I just bought a whole heck of a lot. Ugh, when will I learn? I walk in, tell the cashier "don't let me buy anything unless I *really* want it, and God bless him, when I brought my 9 CDs up, he asked me "Now, you sure, you *really* want all these?" Thats all for now. Innane Chatter, I like that, Eric. In the Navy, Band on the Run... and Army! Sorry -- just being a goof. I heard Army for the first time last night. It was strange... I was flipping stations and I heard about three notes of a song and I thought to myself... "Now if that ain't Ben Folds Five, I am the bastard son of a monkey's uncle." And since I did not immediately turn into a male chimp* I leapt to the correct conclusion that this was indeed Army. I liked it. (Are you really surprised?) It definitely had an AM Gold type of groove to it. You know what I mean... you've seen the commercials... "Remember when songs were fun? Listen to these snippets of "Sunny, "Windy"**, and "The 59th Street Bridge Song" and tell me that life wasn't more simple then -- and besides, everyone was high, so all we ever wanted to listen to were the mellow sounds of AM radio..."*** Back to BFF: So, in my unlearned opinion, Army has that mellow 70's groove to it that makes you think that the song is an upbeat, feel-good kind of thing... but then you listen to the lyrics and DAYAMN!... there's that Ben Folds Five you've come to love! It's a story with a bite to it... laid over a charming melody and some really nice percussion (not to mention the horns and a bit of fuzz bass...). I'm looking forward to hearing it in its entirety, actually. One thing I haven't seen anyone else mention yet is Ben's singing... Is it my imagination, or has Ben grown a bit vocally? His voice sounds stronger to me -- he seems to be reaching less (if you know what I mean). Well, I just wanted to weigh in with my .02 on Army. And to tell San to quit kicking @ss in backstreets and alleyways! *grin* And where's the love, people? It was good to see a post from Sandi and one from Courtney... and Eric seems to be taking up some of that slack. But I haven't seen Ginger in a while, and... Carrie? Matthew? Markus? Jay? Spence (oh-so-silent Spence)? What's going on, people? = ) - -Anne P.S. I picked up the RUSHMORE soundtrack. It is RAWKING me. Right down to a nub. Anyone who likes a little British Invasion mixed with some engaging snippets of jazzy, keyboard-laden incidental music should grab this CD. [Markus -- you need to buy it simply for the percussion of "Piranhas Are a Very Tricky Species".] And oh yeah... the movie rocked as well. = ) * Yes, I know that monkeys and chimps are not the same thing. Thanks for asking. ** Can you tell me why all the songs were about the climate? *** Well, I guess they don't actually say all that on the commerical. But I think it's implied... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Mar 1999 14:50:56 PST From: "Elisabeth Donnelly" Subject: Rushmore sundtrack Oh my, that soundtrack is soooo good. Devo boy, Mark Mothersbagh, is a fun composer. Its worth it just for Creation, but many of the songs are loovely. He owns a suit... 2) Im crusing in the friend zone with a fabulous school friend. I kinda like him, but I do not know if I want to amp it up. We get along great, I can take him shopping, and our roles in the school play, he and I are often touching in wacky physical comedy. Any opinions?
