The time has come for me to define emo. I've been getting lots of questions about it lately, so I figure I'll just define it here. Easy enough? Ok, first off let me start listing a bunch of emo bands... Braid, Sunny Day Real Estate, Mineral, The Promise Ring, Joan of Arc, Jets to Brazil (could be argued that JTB is not pure emo), For Stars, The Gloria Record, Built to Spill, Jimmy Eat World, Jejune... How did I become an emo-kid? 2 things happened. Back in November or so of 1997, I heard an interview with Ben Folds Five where they said if they could be a Built To Spill Cover band, they would. I thought to myself "Hmm, good enough for Ben, good enough for me." And I went out and bought 2 BTS albums never having heard them before. I really loved what I was hearing, it was really unlike anything else I had ever heard before. I didn't really have the words to describe what they were like, but the closest thing i could find was punk. They were like punk, but a brand of punk I'd never heard before. A kind of punk that focuses on melody and intesity. Skip forward a couple months to march. This guy from the radio station was pushing an album by a band called Braid. I played it, and loved it. Shortly after that he pushed Joan of Arc, again, I loved it. By September of this year, I was a full-fledged emo-kid. Now, a history of emo. In the 80s, there was a stright-edge hardcore band called minor threat. One of the guys from it left and formed fugazi. This was kind of the start of emo. People called it "emotional-core" to make fun of it for not being hard core, and then the name shortened to emo or emo-core. Emo's changed a lot since then, but its still highly emotional intense music with its roots in punk and hardcore. For example, one of my fave emo bands ever is Jets To Brazil. They formed from members of the bands Texas is the Reason, Handsome, and Jawbreaker. They are all more hardcore than anything else. The thing is, with modern emo, you really wouldn't know that it comes from hardcore! Now, how to describe emo... Well, the same friend that helped introduce me to emo has a radioshow and his little advertisement said "Listening to my show will make you a more sensitive man. Chicks dig crap like that" =-) And most people do say that its sensitive type people who dig emo. Lets see... how to describe emo. 1st of all, take punk, and slow it waaaay down. Take pop and make it hardcore. Make it focus on melody. Nothing gratuitous. Just melody, intricate drumming, and the singing which is highly intense and emotional. I am not much one for hardcore, but in emo form, it is highly palatable for the average listener. This music really makes you feel something. Its just amazing. I didn't know the extent to which it did that until I listened to Built To Spills new album. I almost (and I am NOT KIDDING) had to pull over the car as I drove because it was just so intense. It hit me that hard. Another little fyi, my 3 fave genres of music are emo, college/indie (I group them together) and powerpop. I love tons of other stuff, but those 3 are at the top of the list. And remember how I said that this will be the year that emo finally gets recognized? Well, I got the new Jimmy Eat World album, and I took it to my parents house to show them what I listen to. I put in track 2, and my sister says "oh my gosh! I know this song! Its on the radio ALL the time!" That was very cool for 2 reasons... some emo is getting commercial airplay! And number 2, I had no idea that it was on the radio, yet I loved it. It just goes to show me that I do not need the radio to discover new music. I listen to what I listen to because I like it, not because it is on the radio. Sometime I find a band that the radio loves, and sometimes I don't, but it doesn't matter. =-) I like that. Ok, this is my post about emo. Now I want you to all go out and buy some good emo music. I reccomend Sunny Day Real Estate to the non-itiated emo-kids out there. =-) enjoy!
