I got 4 CDs today. none of which caused me to open my wallet, which rocks. right now i'm listening to the new Fleming & John. I'm trying to like it, and musically i do, but Fleming's voice grates on me a bit. And it's probably no surprise that the best track on this album is the one that Mr. Folds co-wrote. it's called "Ugly Girl" and reminds me a bit of the arrangement used for "She Don't Use Jelly." i also got this great CD from Hightone Records (Big Sandy's label) called The Hot Guitars of Biller & Wakefield and I looove it! it's nice and mellow. sort of jazzy, sort of twangy. i guess the best way to classify it is western jazz, if there is such a thing. oh how i love the slide guitars! i'm working on getting to Amherst. fingers crossed. i have to get up in the morning. ick. ~Courtney The Sultraness of Swing "Hume Cronyn? Anyone who has been keeping track of my blunders in the romantic world (award yourself 50 cool points just for being able to follow it without going insane) should remember that both my ex and her current are still attracted to me. Well, last night I found out that there is another one of my ex's friends who is interested in me..... and her boyfriend. So the ties go like this: I like my ex and her friend. Her friend like's me and my ex's boyfriend. My ex likes me and her boy friend. Her boyfriend likes us all. Didn't Robert Downey Jr. star in this movie? Anyway, for all of you who worry about not having a love life, take mine, please. ;) Laters all. Hail Eris, 'cause I know she's watching. I heard/saw the new album. It rocks. I think a lot of people may pretend to like it at first listen because it's BF5 and maybe that's a good thing because then they will wind up listening to it enough to like it and "get it". It is certainly a masterpiece... although not what everyone's expecting to hear. I believe Ben said it would be out April 27th (20th maybe?) but the first single entitled something like "Joining the Army" (but referred to as just "Army" last night, so I'm having trouble remembering the actual title) will hit the airwaves in early April. "Break up At the Food Court" is NOT on the album... Alrighty, that's all. Enjoy - -Anoop Ben Folds Five Return with 'Reinhold Messner' Only on a dare would someone read The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner, but every disaffected hipster here and abroad may soon find himself listening to it. Provided the legal eagles behind the eccentric brain trust of Ben Folds Five can garner the proper clearances -- presumably with the nebulous Mr. Messner -- that will be the name of the trio's forthcoming album. Set for release on April 27, the tentatively titled The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner will be the band's fourth album (including the odds-and-sods compilation Naked Baby Photos). According to manager Alan Wohlmark, the band will begin a tour to coincide with the record's release. The new album will consist of eleven tracks, including "Narcolepsy," "Break Up at Food Court," "Magic," "Lullabye," "Mess," "Regrets" and "I Thought About the Army," the first single. Wohlmark says the album's sound will consist of a "wider array of instruments than [in] the past ... but still no guitars" -- a BF5 no-no. Guest musicians include Ken Mosher (baritone, alto sax) and Tom Maxwell (tenor saxophone) of the Squirrel Nut Zippers. Of course, the real question -- one that Ben Folds may have to answer more than "why is it Ben Folds Five if there are only three of you?" -- is "who the hell is Reinhold Messner?" Though Wohlmark was not at liberty to disclose his identity, it seems a certain climber who scaled Mount Everest without the aid of artificial oxygen twenty years ago is the claimant of the name. The Austria-born Messner has devoted the last twelve years of his life to dismissing false information about the Yeti (a k a Abominable Snowman), ever since coming face-to-face with one in 1986. Through the years, the oft-considered-humanoid Abominable Snowman, like the Chewbacca-esque Sasquatch (a k a Big Foot) and Loch Ness Monster, have been subjects of scores of books, TV movies and documentaries, both aiming to corroborate and dispel their existence. Last October, Messner came forth at the world's largest book fair in Frankfurt, Germany, and publicly stated the thousand or so Yeti bears that roam Nepal and Tibet are not missing links, but rather each is a "Tibetan bear, similar to a grizzly but with longer hair." Whether or not this is the same Messner who may get name-dropped on the forthcoming BF5 album is pure speculation, but leave it to Folds to bring some obscure mountaineer into the hipster lexicon. We'd expect nothing less. BLAIR R. It's set for 11 tracks, as follows: Narcolepsy Don't Change Mess Magic Hospital Song I Thought About the Army Redneck Past Your Most Valuable Possession Regrets Jane Lullabye Apparently 'Break Up At Food Court' was either dropped or renamed; it still remains to be seen. I thought it's interesting that 8 of the 11 songs on the album are of the same title as tracks by other recent artists. I guess in this industry, it's bound to happen sooner or later! TUBORM. So, I had to go to the Student Union and run sone errands... I get to the Union and hear the most amazing music... a guitar, a double bass, drums, and an accordian... and this amazing pop sound was coming from them... I parked my bike, went to get a closer listen, and i was just floored. I write a note with my email address and stick it in their money hat so that maybe I can get them on my radio show or something... I start talking to their friend with the CDs, and I shell out 10 bucks for one... I'm listening now, and it is simply amazing. They are from Victoria, BC in Canada and are called Nicely Nicely. They use folk instrumentation to make the coolest pop sounds! Its just great. Here is their website: http://www.cyber.ii.ca/nicemusic Check it out! Rest assured, you will hear these guys on my show on monday!! apparently, they were forced to leave... The UA protects the free speech of any weirdo who wants to claim that he is god, or that you are going to hell and whatnot, but if you are playing good music that people are enjoying, dammit, you must leave. Crazy. Anyway, another band that I saw someone compared them to was They might be giants. I see the similarity, though I'd hesitate to go so far as say that they remind me of each other. They also seem to have some sort of "jam band" feel to them, not unlike Domestic Problems or Dave Matthews Band. Hey hey, I've had all this on my mind all week, but I never bothered to type it up. Last weekend was pretty crazy. On Saturday night I went to see Sloan and Local Rabbits again, this time at the Bowery Ballroom. Rey was there, and it was great to see him for the hour before we got separated. That sort of thing always seems to happen to me at shows--although I dont think all that Corona helped things. Thanks for the beer Rey :-) Okay, it's a given that Sloan and Local Rabbits rocked. If you haven't heard Local Rabbits (if you're not from Montreal, you probably haven't) you should definitely check them out--they're a great pop/rock band. Before the show, I was talking to their guitarist Ben and I told him he should do more metal-style finger-tapping. So during his solo what did he do? He reeled off the amazing pull-off riff and pointed right at me with his free hand. I thought it was pretty cool :-) Okay okay. The BEST part of the night was way before the show though. I went into the Waverly diner on 6th Ave to get some dinner, and who should be sitting in the first booth? Michelle Williams, better known as 'Jen' on Dawson's Creek! I totally freaked when I saw her--I guess I'm not numb to seeing celebs like Courtney must be out in LA. She was sitting with a female friend, smoking cigarettes. I waited for a break in their conversation and I asked, "Michelle?" I introduced myself and we talked for a few minutes, about NYC and her show and some other things. She was an incredibly sweet girl, and looked GREAT in person, by the way. Skipping back to after the show--I hit what was possibly the world's deepest pothole while driving through Jersey City. To make a long story short, I spent over $100 to get my car off the sidewalk and I was stuck until 5am in 20 degree weather--all about 100 yards from the Holland Tunnel. It wasn't much fun! I was determined to make Sunday better. I met up with Rey at Maxwell's in Hoboken and we went to see Ben Lee. The opening band was definitely a pleasant surprise, a power pop group out of NJ called The Selzers < www.selzers.com >. Ben Lee--well, you probably already know how intense the guy can be. His band was terrific and he really spoke to us all, literally and figuratively. At one point he stepped out into the crowd and sang without the microphone. It was such a personal moment--just Ben and less than 200 fans. Unreal stuff! So it was a good weekend on the whole. Thanks, Rey, for coming along and for a great time! - - Leigh 13 ------------------------------ End of The Rockford Files V2 #72 ********************************
