So I bought Elliott Smith's "Kill Rock Stars" album, and i was reading the liner notes and stumbled upon the fact that it was partially recorded at Lesley Uppinghouse's house. Okay, how's this for weird? Lesley Uppinghouse is the woman i worked for when i did the NXNW festival in August. she's really cool... and now she just went up about 50 cool points for being the hostess for an Elliott Smith album. Six degrees in full effect. at the Virgin Megastore last night, i saw that guy from "Jesse" that doesn't talk and i also saw Jack Black, last seen as an icky rasta in "I Still Know." and while we were there shopping, they were doing their big January inventory and the in-store DJ (who just rocks me like a hurricane with his fab british accent) puts on Brimful of Asha, and it was like... something had come over every single person in the store. every one in the store was bopping about happily as they spent too much money on CDs and foreign music magazines. it was entrancing in the same way the Jetta commercial is. but i half expected the entire store to break out with a choreographed dance. alas, it was not to be. i also had the BEST Thai food. if any of you ever come out to L.A. to visit, I will take you there. it's called Natalee Thai and the commercials tout it as L.A.'s "most rockin'" thai, and indeed it is. the chicken satay with peanut sauce was like sex on a fork. yummmy. Yesterday i listened to the S/T CD for the first time in ages. i felt giddy and stuff. i feel like i should build a shrine and chant for a mini pre-album tour. I can't stop listening to my Jet Set Six CD. Stacy knows what I'm talkin' about. did you know that the girl in She's All That, Rachel Leigh Cook, is the same annoying-as-hell girl with the frying pan in the heroin commercial? I speak the truth. How do you think Samuel L. Jackson would feel about being referred to as Jedi Funk? ~Courtney The Sultraness of Swing "His dad owns Harrison Ford." "The Actor?" Donnell" Subject: People who love dogs Maybe Im crabby, but my sister is totally of the breed of People who Love Their Dogs. These are weird people; people who have their dog's pictures taken professionally; people whose relationships are defined by their shared dogs. People who go for insane amounts of walking and who wrestle with their dogs. No offense to those who see themselves here- I know Ill get that gene someday. I JUST DONT UNDERSTAND THE URGE!! Maybe Im cranky, it has been an ubershitty day, but when I get home, I like to have ten minutes to myself to eat chocolate nd read and I do not need a dog at my heels! Its so annoying! On a happy note, I need happy thoughts sent out. Big Harvard interview tomorrow. I just want to be witty and charming! Also, we want my friend to email me. Because he is lovely. 1st-bitching about catholic school. Does this make me evil? I think the resident Father at our school is this dickhead hypocrite. I fucking hate him a lot. And I wish people would start treating me like a 17 year old, not an eight year old. The guy teaches theology and he wants to give me a bad grade just because he doesnt like me. He only likes the so called popular kids, and its so blatantly true. Anal teachers suck. He can climb off of a cliched, fake inspirational funny tree for all I care!!!!!!!! ~Elisabeth "Im not a player, I just crush a lot" ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Feb 1999 13:51:57 PST From: "Markus Kamp" Subject: But What's Markus Listening To? I know you were all burning to know, so here's my top 10 CDs of the week, in alphabetical order (+ the reasons I'm hooked). If you're interested in some new listening material, there should be @ least 1 CD here you don't have: Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes (still her best) Bliss (Various Artists) (ah, tranquil international music) Terry Bozzio - Drawing the Circle (he's reinvinted drumset so that non-drummers can bear to listen to it) Jeff Buckley - Grace (a mainstay, to be sure) Cake - Prolonging the Magic (will stick in my head long after I go all alzheimerish) Panthalassa: The Music of Miles Davis 1969-74 (Remixed by Bill Laswell) (some of Miles's worst work made thoroughly enjoyable) Plus From Us (Various Artists) (if they're good enough for Peter Gabriel, they're good enough for me) Sidney (an ambient Seattle band & a kicky bunch a fellas) Sinforosa - Deadly Faerie Tales (um, duh...I just like it for the cute drummer) Star Rise: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Remixed (Various Artists) (if you've never listend to Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahib, it' way past time you've begun) Markus Kamp - Percussionist Sinforosa ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Feb 1999 16:51:09 -0700 From: Stacy Lynn Subject: I have a show tonight Just letting you know you can catch my show tonight if you like http://kamp.arizona.edu 10pm Mountain time. If I remember correctly, today (Feb 2) the new Built To Spill album comes out. It's called Keep It Like A Secret and I seriously recommend checking it out. I've had an advance copy for about a month now and I just can't get enough! Doug Martsch has an indie-pop voice to die for and the guitar and songwriting skills to go with it. If you liked There's Nothing Wrong With Love, this album does everything that one did and more. Get it!! And in the next few months we get new albums from Bloodhound Gang, Fountains of Wayne, Rage Against The Machine, and of course, Ben Folds Five! It's a good time to be a music lover. Freestyle Walking: Yes, it's old news, but it's coming back and I never wrote about it before. If you buy special freestyle walking shoes, you're missing the point. The idea is that you don't need inline skates or a skateboard or a bike--you just need your feet! I can pull some mean 540's off a Brick wall with just my 26 Red's and a bit of courage. Take that all you boarders! Rushmore: Okay, the incessant ranting has gotten to me. I'll go see it this weekend! And last--Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds tonight at the Beacon Theatre! Let's hope it doesn't get cancelled. Rock on with your bad selves, Leigh 13 ------------------------------ End of The Rockford Files V2 #55 ********************************
