Damn could the weather in Ohio get any worse? I love the snow but this ice sucks. It better clear up by tomorrow, it's College ID night at Howl at the Moon! :) Anoop: The Robot from the Future is doing a speaking tour. Contact the Shrub if you want to have him speak to your class ;) I haven't been able to bring myself to read the MA lately. I think a better post should be "How can anyone pay money for a CD when they have only heard one song on the radio over and over again and not bother to listen to the other songs on the CD?" I watched that same show, m'dear, and what you neglected to mention is that the mob was being controlled by HANSEL AND GRETEL! What was kinda cool was when it looked like WIllow was responsible for killing two kids. I almost gained respect for her. Was I the only one deeply moved by the Evil Vamp Willow episode? ;) As for She's All That, it's simple, it's formulaic, and it stars really cute teens. It should make a bundle. Can you hear the sheep being herded already? It might even take some money from Varsity Blues, which I have to go see, just for the football scenes. Really. The rampant sex has nothing to do with it. Anyway, since Markus is off doing great things with his life, I guess I should start working on starring in films soon, just to catch up. If Markus gets his model girlfriend before I do, I'll be mortified. ;) I'm off to pay the bills, though. Laters all! It's called Cubist Blues and I'm sure it will be damn hard to find. The band is a supergroup containing Alex Chilton, Alan Vega and Ben Vaughn...it's experimental/blues/space/crazy stuff. It's kind of like Alan Vega doing his Nick Cave impression over Mazzy Star tracks. It's really good...especially loud with the lights off and your eyes closed. It's soooo good. You must get it. Must. Must. Must. Must. I have come to this revelation recently. The album is on Thirsty Ear/2.13.61 Records. It's probably hard to find...I found it in a bin at our radio station. Lucky me. Here's what the liner notes have to say about it. Beyond the superhighways of the commercial music business there remain backroads and byways where ramblers can ramble and explorers can explore. These alternate routes have been separately traveled for decades by three extrordinary artists: Alan Vega, Alex Chilton and Ben Vaughn. With this album, their paths converge. For two nights, they met at dusk at a building a block and a half from City Hall in lower Manhattan. Dessau Studio occupied the second floor. (It was named for an earlier tenant, The Harold Dessau Manufacturing Company). Each session went until dawn and proceeded practically in the dark. Interviewer: "How could you see what you were doing?" Alan: "We couldn't" The control room was a dead ringer for the office of Phillip Marlowe, private investigator, complete with smoke provided by chainsmokers Alan, Alex and engineer Drew Vogelman. Reformed smoker Ben was the odd man out. Ben: "Is this bass in tune?" Alex: "Is that a rhetorical question?" The idea was to capture the moment, to let it happen, to trust in their combined years of experience to record without a net. All the songs were created as they were performed in the studio. For precedents, one must look to the tradition of jazz improvisation or the films of John Cassavetes, who allowed his actors the freedom to portray life in all it's unpredictable unfolding. Most rock musicians, on the other hand, are not comfortable with this sort of unstructured approach; spontaneity is only taken so far. With this album, it was taken to the point of controlled chaos. Alex and Ben played and recorded all the instrumental tracks in whatever manner they pleased...to hell with perfection.(Listen for example to the drum sound the inadvertantly innovated on "lover of love"...call it compressed leakage through a piano lid). But the centerpiece of the project is the voice of Alan Vega. It's a unique instrument...the more you listen to it, the more you're going to hear. So dim the lights, sit back, and inhale the atmosphere of Cubist Blues. --Dan Marcus This is such an amazing record and I urge you to set out and find it right away. You better enjoy it too. No one dares defile the album that is Cubist Blues. Damn. That's it for today. Stacy...go get it now.
