When Ben Folds Five's introspective single "Brick" broke big in 1997, the events that followed "made it obvious that I might have a career if I'm lucky," says singer/piano man Ben Folds. "At the same time I went dark. I did some thinking about life, death, love: the big ones." With that, the trio entered Los Angeles's Sound City studio to record the as-yet-untitled follow-up to their platinum Whatever and Ever Amen, due this spring. Among the new tunes are "Narcolepsy," a "musical haiku" about male emotional shutdown, and "Break Up at Food Court," which tackles "how sad it is being in high school and learning about heavy emotional stuff against the backdrop of some cheesy mall." "I love to make fun of myself," Folds says. "Things are more sad when pitted again humor." JESSICA LETKEMANN There's a small picture of Ben, writing at the piano with notebook and pen in hand. He looks a bit pale, and his bald spot and receeding hairline are very visible, as well as a bit of a beard. That's about it. Hrrrmmm... Elliott Smith...playing in a tiny pub here in Melbourne. I am so annoyed...I love Elliott...and I can't see him because I'm 9 months too young. *grrrrr* and I also miss out on seeing Buffalo Tom because of the same reason...and the Manic Street Preachers. So yeah...I'm feeling a little peeved right now. But things could be worse so I won't subject you to my complaining anymore. but I do have a funny lil story that I've already unveiled on the M(ostly) A(ntagonising), so I shall share. I'm in this band thingy that Geoff Harvey (that guy that kicked Our Boys off the Midday Show...) conducts. During some of the rehearsals, I'd wear some of my BF5 tees just to see if he'd say something about Our Boys. During our performance on Carols By Candelight, the pianist guy kept fainting, as it was soooo hot, so Geoff had no choice but to take over and play, and not conduct us. So after the concert, Geoff walks by me and says something like "we could've used that Ben Folds tonight"!!! so yeah, I thought that was cool... anyway, have a spiffy day tomorrow, ~Kel "Your diary's looking like a bible with it's versus lost in time" ~Mayfly - B & S ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Jan 1999 08:42:27 PST From: "Markus Kamp" Subject: Deadly Faerie Tales We picked up the CDs last night...they look/sound even better than we thought! I'm as happy as a little girl:-)! Did anyone else see the review of Fear of Po(o)p in the new Rolling Stone (Beastie Boys cover)? It was mixed, just like everything else I've heard about it. Just wait till the Sinforosa review...yeah, right! Well, here's to 1999; may it be better than 1998 in every way & may all your wishes/resolutions come true! Yeah... I feel so rejected right now. Im doggysitting, and my sister's dog is looking out the window, in a state of utter and complete sadness. Like my sister leaving is such a big deal. But Jessee (Ben tent typo!) is in misery. I dont understand my sisters. They are the type of people who adore their dogs, who spoil their dogs, who treat their dogs like children. They get professional phographs with their dogs. The worst thing is that this gene is inherent in my family, and I think Ill probably feel the urge soon.... Does anyone have the Pleasantville soundtrack? Ive heard a wonderful song by Fiona Apple on there. Also, does anyone have the McGarrigle hour? And if anyone saw Liz Phair on Sessions, could they tell me what it was like? That was supposed to be the highlight of my day, but my family was watching The Wings Of The Dove. Yes, it was a loser day. Thank god the holidays are over, and my life can achieve some semblance of normality. ~Elisabeth "Im thinking dance steps. For those of you who are not in the areas where "The Music Monitor" is distributed (mag available for free at the local Record Exchanges), I thought I'd quickly type up the funny review of Ben's latest masterpiece... **begin** by David W. Jackson I have a theory about Fear of Pop, the "side project" masterminded by Ben Folds and featuring producer Caleb Southern and John Mark Painter of the band Fleming & John. It's an inside joke, surely enough--in fact some of it is so bloody awful that it can't possibly be serious--but it's the kind of not-funny joke that you tell at a party just to see how many morons will laugh really loud and pretend to understand it. "Look, there's a song called 'Rubber Sled'," you will say, "and the reason that's funny is because there's a guy called Robert Sledge in Ben Folds Five, and this I know because I'm a fan." Check it out, William Shatner is on the album doing that cockamamie sing-speak thing, and he still doesn't realize he's being openly made fun of! How hilarious! I haven't laughed this hard since I didn't exactly "get" Devo's Are We Not Men? And the best part is--it doesn't sound anything like Ben Folds Five! He's funny, and he's multi- faceted! Well, duh. Even the bubbleheads at Entertainment Weekly have figured out that Ben's a uniquely talented songwriter, and his band are stellar musicians to boot. Heck, whoever's operating the various instruments on Volume 1 has clearly spent some time honing the ol' chops as well, sample-heavy and gimmick-enhanced it is. There's experimentalism galore here, a la Neu! Faust and all the other Teutonic twiddlers (I'm serious), amidst the dorky phunck and addled spoken- word speiling, and the reason you can tell Ben & co. are experimenting is that it hardly ever works. Sometimes it sounds like the blaxploitation soundtrack Earth Wind & Fire were never invited to make, other times it sounds like (yipes!) Soul Coughing or Cake or all those other bands where the guy doesn't exactly sing, but the one sound that remains consistent throughout this record is that of Sony's money swirling rapidly down the drain. And that's the funniest joke of all. **end** Alright. I think it is a marvelous review and the best one I've read on the album so far. I think this: <> describes about 90% of the people who have claimed to like this album. I laughed outloud when I read that part... And this: <<"Look, there's a song called 'Rubber Sled'," you will say, "and the reason that's funny is because there's a guy called Robert Sledge in Ben Folds Five, and this I know because I'm a fan.">> I find just hysterical because I can see more than half of y'all doing that. ta da. ------------------------------ End of The Rockford Files V2 #28 ********************************
