Some of you may have noticed(this will be me not being modest) that I own a hell of a lot of cd's, I'm sure someone owns more, but my 530 is more than the average person...not to mention the 180 records...I have a thing for jazz on vinyl...jazz must be on vinyl...anyway this is going somewhere. The only I like more than music is literature. I will read anything. Well, almost anything. Regardless, I feel the need to say right now, that Girlfriend in a Coma is a very good book...big ups. Douglas Coupland is an incredible author, and Girlfriend in a Coma may be his best...though "Life After God" is incredible. Just read him. Now. I am going to go on the record and profess my love for the following authors...and if you want to talk to me about them I would be absolutely more than happy to talk about them with anybody. Alright here goes...now. Don DeLillo Paul Auster Douglas Coupland Phillip Roth Saul Bellow Bret Easton Ellis Nick Cave(yes that's the singer...he wrote A book...and it rules) Jeff Gomez William Faulkner I should probably stop there...though there are soo many more. Man. Books rule my world...my favorite book ever is probably Paul Auster's "New York Trilogy", okay so it's three books, but it's only ever published as one volume any more and that should count for something. Or Bret Easton Ellis "Less than Zero". And you have to give props to "Catcher in the Rye". Or "Henderson the Rain King" by Saul Bellow which I have read 4 times. WOW. Oh well...not much else on this front I suppose. Elsewhere in the world...Dan, nice top 25 list...definately agree with the singles...some of the hip-hop I wasn't too impressed with...ie the Jay-Z album...Lauren Hill is good, I wish she wasn't so racist. The best thing happened today...well, A: my best friend came back from school today(I've been off since thanksgiving, we're on quarters, and have been alone the whole time...) and guess what he brought with him...B: The promotional video for UNKLE - Rabbit in your Headlights...for those of you who don't know that's the song that Thom Yorke contributed vocals to. The video is soooo AMAZING. It is the best video ever. It is directed by Jonathon Glazer and it is this autistic male walking through a tunnel in England in the middle of the road. The dude keeps walking...and just ranting and screaming random phrases such as "SHIMMER" and such...and is really kewl. People are driving by and swerving to miss him and then cars just start hitting his ass. Nailing him head on, from the side and from behind. Now yes this is very distrubing...and not the best comment on autisms...but he gets up each time and just resumes walking...until the end where he starts taking off his coat...and then stops. Extends his arms as if on a cross and waits for the next car to hit him...as it does...he doesn't budge and the car just explodes behind him leaving him unscathed and that's the end. Freaking amazing. The computer effects are not gaudy...and believeable...the durability of the man isn't, but all that aside it is sooo wonderful. The worst thing about this, is this will be the only place you can see it because Mtv BANNED IT!!! They say it's negative towards autism...but that's bullshit. First, not too many people no what autistic people act like. Second, he can destroy cars!!!! Man, he busts shit up! It's like a blatant statement, of no matter what...if your autistic or what, you can rock anyone's world. Third the cars don't affect him, it's not bloody, he's just shaken when he should be dead in a bloody pulp. Fourth...free speech!!! Ahhh!!! Oh well...hopefully like Much Music or this new netword Access Entertainment will pick it up...but for now...the Mowax promo video is where its at. Damn...sooo good. Okay...that's enough for me...hope I'm under 7000 characters. Is that true? (rock) John "Who made Chili" --Precious Roy I would do anything to hear you speak of it. Why not smile? I have a few books to add that I think are just great...and I feel like spreading the word: (must read through this drivel to get to the BF5 news at the bottom of this post) Vladimir Nabokov - Lolita = This is probably my favorite book of all time. John Kerouac - On The Road = This is an awesome book and I'm sure a lot of you have already read it anyway. Mary Carr - The Liars Club = I bought this on a whim because I was nannying for a family while they were on vacation and the little bookstore in town didn't have much to chose from. It turned out to be a marveloous book and I highly recommend it. Plus, it was more or less a autobiography, which is my favorite type of book anyway (biographies and autobios). Hunter S. Thompson - Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas = It's a great book. And the movie's pretty cool too. I read this a long while back, but I'd like to re-read it in the future, once I get through this stack of books I still have to read (I buy books faster than I can read them.) David Cassidy - Come On Get Happy: Fear and Loathing on the Partridge Family Bus = Okay, so I am a HUGE David Cassidy fan and a huge Partridge Family fan (have the tattoo to prove it) but I have to say, even if you are not, this is a great book. Now I'm going to end it there because now that I put David, I feel like including Barry Williams' - Growing Up Brady : I was a Teenage Greg...and if I include that, then I'd have to include.... Well, you get the picture. BF5: Album in April. As of yet, they plan to tour beginning in May with a month-long small college clubs type of tour that will not be very publicised...which sounds just fantastic to me. Ben sighting Monday night at Havana (restaurant)...he was out with 2 girls who are very very familiar looking, but I *just* can't place them. Darren & Trey sighting at Peppers Tuesday night while the same 2 girls sat at a table and were thoroughly engrossed in what appeared to be strombolis of some sort. Robert sighting last night (Friday) at the Gladhands/Dag show where one of the girls was seen getting elbowed in the nose by some strange passerby just as Robert was saying hello to her and the other girl was missing in action....perhaps not to be seen again until New Years Eve? Boo-hoo. That's all. Signing off..... Sandrella ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Dec 1998 22:48:18 -0600 From: Clayton Smith Subject: care to narrrow it down?? Thanks a lot, Clayton ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Dec 1998 00:01:55 -0500 From: Kristin Klevering Subject: Keep those music lists coming! I have really enjoyed reading all the posts of the "best of the year" musical releases. Makes me pissed off I have to cut my music spending, and all other spending because I'm trying to save up for a house. And a new car. I spent way too much on Christmas this year, again, but now that all of my shopping is done, I feel more in the holiday spirit and can relax a little. Got a bit of Christmas cheer when I finally got to start wrapping my presents. I LOVE to wrap gifts. My dream job would be to work at a department store in the gift wrapping department. Strange, but true. I see it as one creative outlet I'm actually good at. My parents love me for it, since I wrap almost every gift they buy except ones they buy for me every year. I don't have a ranking of what I've really enjoyed musically in the past year, but I do have some favorites. They include Kim Fox, Gladhands, Fluid Ounces, Elliot Smith, Jump Little Children, Ride,Belle and Sebastian, and Lowest of the Low. Most of them were suggested either by members of the RF or the MA. The only thing I've really been dissapointed in buying after it's been recommended by either maillist is New Radicals. I don't dislike it, I just don't really like it much. I also love the "Chef Aid" CD. My boyfriend and I really enjoy that one a lot. We love to laugh at the songs Chef sings on that CD. I had to buy a copy for a friend of mine at work, who has graciously listened to me sing parts of the songs to her since Thanksgiving, since I know she'd love to hear them sung by Chef rather than tone-deaf me! She bought the tape version of the album for her daughter, but it's really best appreciated in CD form, when you can skip over some of the stuff that isn't that great.
