I'll do it in two parts. This here is part one, albums 1-15. Part two will be 16-25 and the singles. Enjoy! I can't stop at 10 albums; so here's my Top 25. 1. R.E.M., "Up". Possibly the most startling album of 1998, in terms of it coming from an established band, it nonetheless redefined their sound, provided what will likely be one of 1999's most memorable singles ("At My Most Beautiful"), and showed that you don't need to have a drummer to be a successful rock band-and you don't need to tour, either. 2. Belle and Sebastian, "The Boy With the Arab Strap". This album only served to evolve the band's sound from their previous efforts, and make all the albums more listenable. "Dirty Dream No. 2" is a glorious Motown homage with a haunting bridge, and "Simple Things" is a brilliant minute and a half of pure love at its best. 3. Tricky, "Angels With Dirty Faces". Truly, the man can do no wrong, and his current steps toward creating a new fusion of drum n' bass and trip-hop show how far ahead he, and the whole British electronic scene in particular, is ahead of the time. 4. Beastie Boys, "Hello Nasty". The sort of album you rarely hear: one the beat boys and frat boys can dance to, and one whose moments of gleeful name-dropping circa Chubb Rock and Run-DMC might serve to show Puffy exactly what sort of "1989 rooftop scene" he's looking to create in people's minds. Let's face it: Sean Combs may be dreaming of it, but the Beasties have been chilling there for twenty years. 5. Elliott Smith, "XO". However close this man is to killing himself (depending on whose account you read, it's either inevitable or getting there), Elliott Smith right now is so adept at mining his pain for great songs that mix happiness and despair in insane, roller-coaster-like swings that he deserves to be lauded and listened to. One of the unsung masters of our generation in a time when commercial pop is cloying and aggravating. Elliott Smith could front fucking Third Eye Blind and make it listenable - and realistic instead of a self-parody. 6. Beck, "Mutations". If it was hi-fi, frantic Beck, it would likely be trite and a disappointment. But Beck is _low-key_, now, kiddies, and his folk album is a pleasant refrain from the funkiness. 7. Lucinda Williams, "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road". If this is where modern country music is headed, I may be along for the ride...a beautiful, memorable album that oozes sincerity from every pore and aches to be listened to. 8. Jay-Z, "Vol 2...Hard Knock Life". The single coolest man on the planet releases an album of party beats that scream "Mix tape!" and don't stop ringing in your ears until you start singing the chorus from "Money Cash Hoes" in church. 9. Lauryn Hill, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill". Lauryn Hill is simply beyond funk, bringing to female artists the same sort of excitement the Fugees brought to rap two years ago. 10. They Might Be Giants, "Severe Tire Damage". The perfect TMBG primer, and one of the best live albums I've ever heard. There is nothing that comes close to the silliness of TMBG, and to honour them more I will not mention the Barenaked Sellouts on this list. 11. Air, "Moon Safari". French techno-pop with a cruel twist: it's actually something Americans can get into. 12. Kahimi Karie, "Kahimi Karie". Japanese candy-pop with a cruel twist: it's bearable and very musical as well. 13. Pulp, "This is Hardcore". An emotionally jarring, musically complex piece of music that solidifies Pulp's position as the Brit band Oasis wishes they were. Hear that, Oasis? Huh? By the way, no one gives a hang about your damned masterplan as it is... 14. Afghan Whigs, "1965". Greg Dulli may be a lousy drunk, but he's a lousy drunk who makes great music. Dig it. 15. UNKLE, "Psyence Fiction." A chaotic, brilliant masterpiece of an electronic album. Beats, rhymes, etc...and Richard Ashcroft at his least annoying. Part two to follow soon! - -- Dan Cohen Network Techni-whatever, Retail Flunky, Cable Modem Bee-yotch, Part-time Jigga PC Solutions, Inc. Hole, "Celebrity Skin". Yay! Courtney isn't grungy anymore! Melissa Auf Der Maur...mmm...! And possibly the best pure modern rock song of the year, "Malibu"! 17. Spiritualized, "Live at the Albert Hall". Spiritualized is one of those bands that brings out an obscene amount of emotion in you. This is more of an experience than a CD. 18. Soul Coughing, "El Oso". Funky, uh. M. Doughty can turn a straightforward song into a steaming slice of groove pie like few others. 19. Sunny Day Real Estate, "How it Feels to be Something On". Emo that's not pretentious, overtly egotistical, and actually heartfelt, the way it was supposed to be before it got commercial. Good stuff. 20. Liz Phair, "whitechocolatespaceegg". Ah, Liz Phair, in love. Marraige and adulthood have made her wiser and more mature but not less of a musician, thankfully. She may not be talking about "fucking like a volcano", but the alternative isn't that bad itself. 21. Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello, "Painted From Memory". Two legends of music, two different sounds, two generations, one hell of an album. "Toledo" is utterly gorgeous. Nothing more to say. 22. DMX, "It's Dark and Hell is Hot". More a portrait of a troubled soul than a regular rap album, DMX's debut nonetheless manages to entertain while provoking. "Ruff Ryders Anthem" along with "Faith" by Limp Bizkit may be the two most adrenaline-inducing tracks of the year. 23. Money Mark, "Push The Button". While it's hard not to love a guy named Money, the Beastie keyboardist actually pulls off a good album, using instrumentation and beats galore to make himself a name in the scene. I think I convinced Court to actually buy this one some night on IRC; I never found out if she followed through. 24. Tori Amos, "From The Choirgirl Hotel". OK, so it's Tori Amos, and I don't really have a choice. She rocks. But her album is full of more yummy female angst and stories, as well as a pervading feeling of troubled sexuality that serves to show _every_ wannabe diva and ghetto-girl how it's done. 25. Sean Lennon, "Into The Sun". Do I have a weakness for whiny-voiced celebrity children? Not really. But dammit, Sean Lennon is talented! And he's pretty fly, for a, well, half-Japanese guy. And now, the singles. Picking the best single of the year is hell; I like songs that aren't even released to radio or haven't been yet. I look for a well-rounded, catchy number that keeps its flavor; it's REALLY hard to hear "One Week" by the band whose name I swore I wouldn't say a few times without wanting to plunge one's hand through a car window. I've got five finalists. First, let me introduce the four runners-up, in no particular order: "My Favourite Game" by the Cardigans: More than just a controversial video, this song is a perfect showcase for Nina Persson's lilting voice and the band's unique sound. And if it can be played at Best Buy over the PA, well, then, that's good enough for me. "Still Not A Player" by Big Punisher and Joe: Yeah, you gotta love the following line: "I'll ram my dick through your hooters, I'm slick, they couldn't measure my dick with six rulers". And did I mention he's a painfully obese, fugly Puerto Rican guy who can barely stand on his own, let alone bust a move? "Dirty Dream Number Two" by Belle and Sebastian: Motown and Scottish pop fuse together for a bombastic, big-sounding song which shatters Belle and Sebastian's usually quiet facade and exposes them for the bunch of free-thinking tramps they really are. "Baby Britain" by Elliott Smith: The closest thing to a pop song Smith may be capable of creating, it lit up XO with a life of its own (moribund, brooding, foreboding...semi-catchy!...dark...disturbing....quiet...), unrecognized as it was within a largely unnoticed album. One of those songs that sticks with you for a long time. And the winner is... "At My Most Beautiful" by R.E.M. No one I've spoken to, upon hearing this song for the first time, hasn't been moved by it. It combines lush harmonies with what may ultimately be some of the most sincere, beautiful sentiments expressed in REM's lyrics. And it wins the big prize by being able to be heard over and over again with no degrading of its beauty. And, just because I'm feeling frisky... The Worst Single Of The Year. (tie) "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)" by The Offspring "One Week" by That Band I'm Not Going to Name These are the songs that make you want to move to Vanuatu or Tonga, the songs that make you long for the simple pleasures of Vanilla Ice and All-4-One. I will not comment on their awfulness, except to say that they do nothing for mankind whatsoever. My stupid list continued. David Sedaris- Genius. Genius. Genius. Able to truly capture the pathos and humour in everyday life. 'Naked' is a classic book, and I would read excerpts to my english class last year, and the boys would be excited because of the title. Only a man such as he could title an essay 'Dinah, the Christmas Whore' and end it with "the phrase 'ho, ho, ho' took on a different meaning...and our family could appreciate it in our own clannish way." Buy Holidays on ice (8$, price of XO by Elliott Smith) and then Naked. Barrel Fever is also funny, but its more uneven. Lenoard Cohen- Due to Jeff Buckley, Im a fan of his poetry. Reccommended book-Stranger Music, which compliles together all his great ones and weird ramblings about sex. YOU MUST buy the compliation 'Im Your Fan' which was out in 91 and has rem and James, its so good. Gives you lenoard cohen songs with out the lenoard cohen voice.=) Ellen Gilchrist-I cannot get you close enough- I am IN LOVE with this author. Anyone else? In the hands of a lesser talent, her work could come off cheesy and soap opera like, in her hands its glimmering, incandescent poetry. She really takes experience and fits it into the absolute perfect words, especially in this book. Its sooo good. Itd actually make a pretty good film, too, but thats a different story. She inspires me to write, even though her stories are populated in the south, which I know nothing of. still waiting for disappearing boy to email me, dammit! David Foster Wallace, _A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again_ As my friend Spiff says, DFW is god. This book, a collection of essays, is a little more accessible than his 1000 page _Infinite Jest_. He still has pages and pages of footnotes, but that seems ok since it's not fiction. He tackles topics like the strange world of luxury cruises and the Illinois State Fair, playing competitive tennis as a kid and a really intellectual piece on the implications of television... but what's not coming across is how damn funny he is. It's not the easiest read, but it's also incredibly rewarding. Douglas Coupland, _Girlfriend in a Coma_ This came out in March, oh well. It's another of Coupland's looks at Generation X (he named it, after all), but it kind of reminds me of the works of some modern spanish writers for its mystical realism... it's a look at why we don't question some of the major tenets of our culture that maybe should be the only thing we think about but instead just accept... but again, it's also an entertaining read and rather affecting. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Dec 1998 01:30:26 -0500 (EST) From: Ginger Nance Subject: yeesh, lots of lists My head hurts from all of these top 10 lists. Wonderful must haves like The Eels, and then nods to stuff that no one else has mentioned yet. Thats what I like to see! Ok, what else have I to say? Some fave books. I just finished this book called The Vagabond. It is by Colette. Its a wonderful wonderful book. I highly reccomend it. Its about a lady of 33 years who has been married before to a very controlling man. She is an actoress. She has an admirer who a mutual friend introduces to her, and one thing leads to another and they fall in love. Then she goes away to tour with the company, and well, you have to read it to find out what happens. It isn't what you think. It isn't a romance either. It is more a story about women's psyches. Like I said about a week ago, why girls freak out when a guy falls in love with them... Carrie, I think it was you, then had a list of do nots for guys in new reltionships... well, this book shows that. This guy has little experience in love and is just head over heels for her, and she ... well, read the book. Also written in a very readbale style. nice and fast reading. took me 2 days. Nobokov is my fave author. I reccomend Pnin, about a portly russian professor in the United States... a humorous, yet bittersweet novel, and The Defense, about a chess player who makes it his life. litterally. VERY good. Emile Zola - Therese Raquin is the novel. Its also fairly short... it goes very quick, a real page turner. Its about ghosts people create for themselves when they do very bad things. Thats it for book reccomendations. Job update - one more week. Wow... but chances are I will get rehired. I hope so. Cuz I've been looking for another one and I still can't find one@ Some people can't believe that I would give up my job to go on a trip, but how often do you get to go to NYC? And when your boyfriend lives there, its that much more special, you know? And it may take time, but I know I can find another job. They have been putting me in a different dinning room the past couple nights at Canyon Ranch. They only send people there that they really like, so I feel special. The only thing is dinner is much shorter there, so I am jsut not getting enough hours. =-( My CD habit... well, I used my super CD buying skills and got Rialto for only about 5 bucks. I rock at the CD buying thing. Thats the whole problem. I can get CDs for 5-10 bucks, and so I say "wow, thats such a great price I should buy more" and then of course, I am still spending 30 bucks. At least I get 3 or 4 CDs with that. But Rialto is the last CD I can buy until I have 1) a solid job again and 2) I have saved up enough money so that I'm not paycheck to paycheck... SCHOOL IS OUT!!! YAY ME!!!! And yay to all of you lucky cats out there that have no more finals either. Hopefully, that is all of you by now, and if not, good luck! Happy last night of Hanaka (so I can't spell...) and Christmas is a week from today! (yesterday?) so happy holidays tout le monde! I am in such a holiday mood. I move home tommorow, but I think I told you already, my parents are wonderful so I can borrow my dad's account on my cmputer so I will still have email etc. yay dad! And, Courtney, I love you!!
