You asked for it, you got it. Do you think Medeski, Martin & Wood's Combustication is an example of where jazz is heading, or is it simply the after-effects of the general malaise that's been affecting modern music for quite some time? If the latter is true, where are we heading? If the former, what will happen to the influences of the "golden era" of jazz? Will they disappear for a few years only to be brought back in a rush of sampling a la Puff Daddy? Seriously, consider that we're in a dry period for music right now. I like the Rockford Files and dammit, Jordan, I like hearing about our parallel lives. :P ~Dan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Nov 1998 17:06:34 -0600 From: "Anoop Ranganath" Subject: yup, yup, yup I've got to go with Dan on this one. I kinda like the fact that Dan and Jordan basically keep a journal on the RF. I always enjoy reading their posts and usually learn a little more about my own behaviour because of them. Anyways, on the other hand, we are in a dry spell right now music wise. but 9 more days til Fear of Pop, and that should trigger a deluge of posts that will at least get us through Christmas. What else is new? Nothing much. I guess it's time to take a Poll. Maybe that'll make things more lively. 1) What do you think Brick is about? 2) What's your favorite song by Ben Folds Five? 3) If you could be any member of the band, who would you be? You guys and the Pit are part of my general creative outlet. It's coincidental that Jordan's and my experiences are so similar. > > Anyways, on the other hand, we are in a dry spell right now music wise. but > 9 more days til Fear of Pop, and that should trigger a deluge of posts that > will at least get us through Christmas. > Oh yes...I cannot argue with you there, Anoop. OK, I'll stop. In journal news, I'm not going to go into my weekend of pain and nastiness with a certain girl named Emily Ward, since I've run the story into the ground (and also since I'm not sure how many of you actually appreciate my rambling yet), but let's just say I'm down again. I did, however, get to drive on the interstate for the first time tonight, propelling the family Dodge to nearly 70 miles per hour and making my mom pass a stone in the process. Heh. It was a blast and the countdown until permit day is now at 57 days. Yay! Still haven't received Scott's parcel...it will probably arrive tomorrow. And I withheld $15 for you...shame, shame. Jesse Ventura is on the cover of Time magazine this week. I find that amusing and very cool. Beck's Mutations is amazing. Simply put. I can't say this enough...go and buy all the copies at Sam Goody/Musicland/Media Play or wherever you buy records for yourself, because it merits veneration. Make a shrine to Mutations in your closet. I'll shut up now and go eat dinner... Quote of the day: "That is stupid. That's stupidville." -me...I have no idea where the hell "stupidville" came from...besides the fact that I am a dork. Hung out with psedo-rockstars Friday night thanks to Ginger....pure excitement I tell ya. Anoop ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Nov 1998 19:28:08 -0800 From: flames on the side of my face Subject: one early mornin', as i was walkin' I met a man. went in the tavern to get a few nips but all i had was One Mint Julep was the cause of it all ahh.. i love Sarah Vaughan. i want to be a Diva like her.then i could wear those wonderful swishy dresses and sing into one of those old fashioned microphones. men in pinstripe suits would fall at my feet. wouldn't it be wonderful? well let's see.. i've had a pretty uneventful weekend. Friday night i was supposed to go see Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums in Redondo beach, but my friend who was supposed to go with me (as well as drive) completely disappeared. i have a feeling she decided to go up to SF for the weekender, and if i find out that she did and didn't even bother to call me, she is SO on my shit list. so instead of seeing Steve and Carmen, i stayed home and watched Buddy Faro and Nash Bridges. Buddy Faro is one wierd ass show. it's all like.. supposedly swingin', but then it's so NOT. but Frank Whaley is cute and Dennis farina is kinda funny. Nash Bridges on the other hand... big thumbs down. i was never fan of Don Johnson's. not even in the Miami Vice days. so then saturday i spend most of the afternoon not wanting to do reading for my stupid Hitchcock paper. then my friend Erik calls to tell us that "It" is on and Seth Green is in it. so i amused myself that way for 4 hours. then we head out to Century City to catch "Elizabeth" and then "Velvet Goldmine." Well, "Elizabeth" was sold out, so we just saw "Velvet Goldmine." well, i liked it, but it was really whacked out. Regardless of whether or not he has his tounge down another man's throat, Ewan McGregor is still walking sex. sorta scary how spot-on his whole Iggy Pop thing was. then today i put on my Uberdress and went to help my friend out with her film. it was a '40's Noir, so of course she called on me. and i sat around there for a few hours. did a bit of flirting with the gaffer, who was wicked cute... then it turned out she needed me for less scenes than she thought, so i got to takeoff early. then we decided to try to see "Elizabeth" again in santa monica. that didn't happen. it was sold out. but i was on the Promenade and ran into a bunch of swing dancers i know who come down every sunday and Lindy on the promenade. it's cute. saw Carlos Leon AGAIN (you'll remember him as the father of Madonna's baby). this is the 3rd time we've seen him. and all afternoon he was front-following us. it was annoying. and he REALLY needs a haircut. now i have to do scads of reading for two classes. of course this will all transpire after the new Simpsons, that 70's show and the season premiere of the X-Files. man, i love That 70's Show. i think that Topher Grace kid is adorable. we're going to a taping of it one of these days when we round up an army of 10 people together one friday night. rawk. i'm gonna try and pick him up. well, me and my tartliness are going to go watch TV now. ~Courtney The Sultraness of Swing "I've been discovered!"
