Re: daylight savings now people.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 26 Oct 1998 02:15:24 -0800 From: Big Red Truck Subject: that extra hour has done me good (REALLY LONG) ah well, i've had a really great weekend. i completely ignored studying for my 3 midterms this week and focused on having F!U!N! Friday night i was supposed to go see Swingerhead, a really great band from Florida, play in Redondo beach. but some wires got crossed and my name was not on the guest list. so instead of plunking down money i don't have, i talked my friend into taking me to a friend's party in the midwilshire area (like a 30 minute drive from Redondo). it was great fun. there were good cocktails, great music (we did a lot of dancing in the living room to Indigo Swing) and i didn't feel out of place in my 50's cocktail dress because Lauren, the hostess, was wearing vintage too. i also got a chance to meet a few of my fellow Barflies (people from my swing list) and that rocked. i swear, Barflies kick as much ass as everyone in the COF. saturday evening, my friends had gotten some free passes to a test screening of "A Bug's Life" at the El Capitan theatre (it's on Hollywood Blvd. across from Mann's Chinese, and it's an old fashioned movie palace and - i think - former vaudeville theatre--- absolutely GORGEOUS inside). the movie was freaking hysterical. 10 times funnier than Antz! i loved it! you all HAVE to go see it when it comes out. plus it's Pixar, so of course it feckin' rocks. after the movie we went to the Virgin Megastore and shopped. i listened to the new Cardigans and Jon Spencer and also heavily perused the jazz section but was too indecisive to make a purchase. got home and i headed to a party at my friend's apartment. sat out on the balcony most of the time and after a few hours the drunken hunger set in and we made some DAMN good mashed potatoes. so today we went to santa monica and strolled around teh Promenade. i sold back some crappy cds i had gotten from some labels and picked up the new Jon Spencer (which was filed under Punk). the guy at the counter, who is pretty cute, says to me "what's a nice girl like you doing listening to Jon Spencer?" i have to say, that's about the funniest thing anyone has ever said to me. what a pick up line. i laughed all the way out of the store. i also went to Muskrat (faboo vintage shop) and score a silver clutch purse that will match the shoes i was planning on wearing to Indigo Swing later in the evening. so we go home, i pop in the new CD and bust out the ironing board and get my dress ready for Indigo Swing. i spend way too long trying to curl my hair under and of course had trauma with too much hairspray. but in the end it all worked out beacuse i looked like Donna Reed. word. lauren gets to my place and we head off for the Palace. we get there at 8:15 and the band is supposed to go on at 8:45. it's damn near empty. we spot some list people we know and sit down at the table. William (the piano player) walks by and we chat for a bit, then Josh (guitarist) comes by and we talk for about a second. and later i'm finally introduced to their PR woman, melissa, wuith whom i played a wicked game of phone tag this past week. but she rawks because she put me on the guest list on really short notice. a ton of my barfly friend were there and it was a nice haning out with them, and i also end up meeting a few more Barflies and they kick much ass, as expected. the band goes on and oh man, i danced more than i ever have. it's all about having a good lead. i was spun and spun and spun around so many times, i can't even keep track. i think it was the most fun i've had at a swing show as long as i've been going. Indigo are fabulous to watch, believe me, but they are so GREAT to dance to. it heightens the experience ten fold (Folds? bentent? sure, why not.). so that was my weekend in a nut shell. oh, and PLEASE everyone be sure to tune into my show this week because i'm going to have in studio guests, teh Jive Aces. all the way from the UK, these guys rock. (sure i'm a bit weary that they quote L. Ron Hubbard in one of their songs, but i can get past that). so make sure to listen, and even better; call in and ask them some questions! time to hit the hay. ~Courtney The Sultraness of Swing "Really Skip, the keenest? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Oct 1998 08:51:17 -0500 (EST) From: Eric Patton Subject: The Morning After Dan, I will put the smack down on you or anyone else in Tekken 3 with Eddy. I have a dirty little secret: it's a lot easier to play a character when you've both studied the same martial art. ;) Anyway, my weekend. Oy gevalt! I drank like a dirty monkey on Saturday. I went to my friends Halloween party. The theme was Hell, and you had to drink your way out by going through Purgatory and facing the Seven Deadly Sins. Lust was Blow Jobs (the drink, for the uninitiated,) Pride was Kamikazes poured directly into your mouth until you gave, Greed was Goldschlager, Sloth was make your own drinks, Gluttony was Mind Erasers (or so I've been told,) and I can't remember the others. You see, after drinking a fair amount on my own, I made a fatal mistake: I told my friend Sean that I'd drink whatever he made me. Now, Sean can outdrink a football team and still walk a straight line. He poured me another two Mind Erasers (I remember the empty cups of ice, and that's it) and sent me on my way. Well, to save myself further embarrassment, I'll end the story with so I had to clean the carpets the next day. ;) But I had a blast and no one was permanently damaged, unless you want to count memory loss. Anyway, I gotta get back to work. Laters all! Anne is back! I just finished reading through my backlog of Fjords, and can I just say one more time... You guys rock me right on down to a nub. I had such a big grin on my face! So before I mention any of my good times in HOT-lanta, I will comment... 1.) A *Frumpy* Sandi -- God forbid! I think that that may just be impossible! And Sandi... how is it that when you help guys on the side of the road, they turn out to be in rock bands, and when I pick them up, they turn out to be chainsaw-wielding psychopaths? (thank goodness he forgot his chainsaw in his trunk! *grin*). All I can say is... You go girl!!! I'm rooting for ya hunny! 2.) AC/DC -- Thanks Eric! It was indeed a welcome tune to hear in my head... plus I always associate that song with Halloween, so it was doubly delicious! Hail Eris! 3.) FL's Truisms -- I hear, ya, E... I hear ya! I agree with all of what you said (although you already knew that!)... but I truly had to laugh out loud when I read "sink or swin"! I'm thinkin' that that should be the slogan of BENcon '99!!! I could go all Freudian on you and say that you were mixing "swim" with "sin" -- but I won't (well, actually, I just did. So sue me. *grin*). Actually, come to think of it... maybe our slogan should be "sink or sin"... Mmmmmmmmm... sin. 4.) Dream Annealysis -- Anytime you are ready Ginger... I'm here! 5.) Bacchanalian Rituals -- December 4 - 6 you say? You are in need of Bacchantes for your ceremonies you say? Hey... any activities identified with the god of wine and ecstasy are for me, even if they are suggested by lurkers... I say... Bring on the euphoria-filled revelries! Tell me more. 6.) Romper Room! -- E! Thank you for confessing to your desire to hear your name called throught he magic mirror! I thought I was the only one!!! And you'd think with fairly common names like Anne and Erik that we'd have heard them... all I remember is that Anna seemed to be called, but never Anne (plus even if she did say "Anne" -- she'd probably mean "Ann" anyway!!!). Thanks for the grin, E!!! Now... onto my trip. Day-amn! Talk about Bacchanalia! Free beer and Anne do not mix. Or rather, we mix much too well! On my first day back, I ended up taking a three hour nap because I needed to catch up on so much sleep! I met two new partners-in-crime and the three of us painted the town red. Thursday night especially... We went to this party at this cool renovated theater (the name of which I can't remember because I was too plowed when I left!) sponsored by some company or other. Free food -- free booze -- great band (lots of funk) -- what more do I need to say? Actually, it was very funny, before we got there, my two partners-in-crime (Mike & Ed) and I were all talking about how ravenous we were since we hadn't eaten all day and how we needed to hit the buffet as soon as we got there. So we did... we found the food... which just happened to be right next to the bar and the next thing I know, it's midnight and I have consumed only 4 tortellinis but was able to down about 8 or so drinks (Captain's & Coke or beer... whatever was handed to me, I wasn't picky!) Apparently, when you are hungry and you are faced with the choice between free food and free booze... you can indeed exchange drinks for food on a one-to-one basis. Or at least that is my hypothesis... I may need to do more research on that. I can safely say that a Good Time Was Had By All. And that will be all for me for now. Except for this... Emily???!?!!!??! Where are you??? I haven't seen hide nor hair of you on the RF is waaay too long. Join us in the Fjordian lounge please for cocktails soon!
