My theory on Fear of Pop is that it's secretly a solo album by Darren, who's playing all three instruments at once and singing and songwriting, too. Ben and Robert are just showing up to be pretty for the camera and give him the occasional rubdown. ;) Okay, I'm in need of a new sig quote, and I can't really think of one. First person to give me an original quote that just kicks ass gets 50 cool points and my everlasting gratitude. Previous quotes are: "Oriental my ass! This tastes nothing like a real Oriental!" "Fate has kneecaps too." "Women's minds work on a complexity level somewhere inbetween Quantum Mechanics and God." So, I'm starting the contest today. Winners are chosen simply by me, so you can either send me the personal e-mail or send it to the list. Oh yeah, and as the lone South Side boy on the list, I'm obligated to say that the Cubs still suck, even if Sosa kicks ass. ;P Laters all! Hail Eris! Listen to some Prokofiev, Mike Oldfield, Aaron Copland, Danny Elfman, or Philip Glass...yes, some of that (Elfman) was composed only for films, but so what. Good stuff, Maynard. As far as girls go, communication is the only way to go. If you don't know this girl well enough to "flat-out ask her" yet, don't worry. If you're meant to, you will. Patience, my good man, patience. On to the swing craze...as a longtime jazz aficionado & former "top high school jazz drummer" in the US, I'm tickled a girlish pink by the recent surge in the popularity of swing. Sure, a lot of the new stuff's crap (anything w/"Daddy" or "Daddies" in the title!), but some of the old stuff was crap, too. Sure, it's become really commercial, but it was even more commercial 50 years ago. It's the music industry, ya know?! There's a reason Brian Setzer & SNZ are so damned good @ it...they're just damned good musicians who approach everything they do from a musical standpoint, not a commercial one. As w/any other music, buck the trends when necessary, find what YOU like, & just stick w/that. You found BFF, so obviously your taste is better than most people's! ERIK: GO SOSA!!! Frankly, as a non-baseball-aficionado, I couldn't care less about the Cubs (except for the fact that Chicago is my 2nd favorite city in the US), but I really respect Sammy. Yeah, McGwire's alright, too, but I really wanna see Sosa take the HR title. All this reminds me of one my NY friends' (a Yankees fan) t-shirts..."THE METS ARE POND SCUM". COURTNEY: A Django Reinhardt reference!!! You feckin' rock, kiddo! Folks, listen to this girl...obviously when she finds something she likes, she looks into its history. Django is one of the most important musicians of our time but, sadly, few people even know his name. Bonus points for you, little chickie:-)! Next, you're gonna be pullin' Jelly Roll Morton, Baby Dodds, Sidney Bechet, & Bix Beiderbecke outta your arse...though that might hurt! Markus's Advice, part 657: I've said it before & I'm sure I'll say it again...just be yourself, PROUDLY, and be open about it w/other people who matter. Found this article on AOL at SPINonline...thought it was very interesting and I didn't remember seeing it here before, so nyyuh... <<----------------------------------------START COPY---------------------------------->> BELLE & SEBASTIAN ELLIOTT SMITH Shepherd's Bush Empire London, England September 7, 1998 For such a lot of people, Belle & Sebastian don't make much noise. Not half as much as the wispy-looking crowd, who incongruously but merrily heckled their late-arriving heroes. The ornate, high ceiling of this appropriately opulent venue (it still has red velvet seats from its days as a theatre) might not have been reverberating with rock noise, but the room did swell with sheer joy and an overwhelming desire to sing along. Occasionally B&S lead singer/guitarist, Stuart Murdoch, was grateful for such intrusive accompaniment--when he forgot the lyrics to the delicious "Seeing Other People," several bright sparks were ready to prompt him. Despite a reputation for shoddy musicianship on stage, the eight disarmingly geeky Scots managed to play about three instruments each, and they displayed enviable flair on them all, keeping the set moving without a hitch through painstakingly faithful renditions of album tracks and singles. The biggest surprise was a dark and raucously thrashing dance number replete with warped chords and growling, sampled vocals. The magic of a Belle & Sebastian song is you don't know what's going to slip in next: they have violin, cello, kiddie xylophone, a proper piano, trumpet, clarinet, gentle drums, and three guitars, all whispering their own eloquent and hopelessly romantic phrases, drifting in and out of the fray as if these were real orchestral symphonies rather than pop songs. Skipping through "Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying" (and the Belle & Sebastian theme tune), they sparkled with a breezy charm and angelic loveliness that was bewitching. Other heavenly delectables from their shoe-in for best album of 1998, The Boy With the Arab Strap, included the near Motown sounds of "Dirty Dream #2," the up tempo, good vibrations of the title track, and the wispy "Is It Wicked Not To Care" featuring cellist Isobel Campbell's idiosyncratic vocals atop Murdoch's glockenspiel(!). Such a cherubic band had to have someone equally cute in support, and the impish, woolly hatted Elliott Smith was perfect. He was completely dwarfed by the massive stage, which even threatened to swamp Belle and Sebastian, but his beautiful guitar playing rippled and shimmered and filled up the space admirably. His singing voice lacks dynamics--even the word f*** sounds like baby talk coming from him--but his lyrics ricochet with a sadness that cuts deep and would be perfect to wallow in on a lonely, rainy night. <<------------------------------------END COPY------------------------------------------>> New Scooby Doo movie...I have rehearsal for "Me and My Girl" tonight at 7...I really think "World domination, of course. So I'm glad a lot of you caught Ally this week. :) I have to say I laughed my ass off at the part where the Biscuit introduced his horse...quite amusing. Nice name for a horse. I told you (Em, Cal, Ginger, Katie & whoever else happened to have listened) she's big in all the wrong places...much like a horse...and this just reinforced my theory (actually it was Roger's theory, but I borrowed it). Anywhoo, Yes Anne I am still enjoying Elliot Smith's XO album. My favorite track is definitely Baby Britian....wakes me up while driving. And my fave Baby Britian line thus far is "the radio is playin' Crimson and Clover". Gotta love it. Ginger and I are off to see him Tuesday. Woo-hoo. I already bought tickets and everything. Robbie Fulks is Saturday night, as long as we can get tickets...nobody at SchoolKids knows what's up with presales, so I'm hoping it won't be sold out at the door. And guess who I'll be seeing on Monday? The great and mysterious Doug-ster. Crazy, crazy, crazy. Someone to sing some Dee Snider with. Yaa-hoo! Very clever observations about Fear Of Pop being non-existant, but I have to say, I was in Bloomington while it was being recorded and even heard some rough tracks. I went to the studio, met the engineers, met Caleb, went on nice walks, hung out with friends who later became quite the contrary, the whole bit. If it's non-existant, someone went through a lot of trouble for me to see it "in the works". Yikes...I have to get dressed and eat and tons of other shit before work and it looks like I only have about half an hour. Ta-ta. Sandi Ps. Nice to finally see an Emily Brown post.
