So... in the vacuum that has been creted by the dearth of new stuff from BeFeF, I have found myself repeatedly flipping to the "classic rock" stations... and man, I'd forgotten how much the 'classic' stuff kicked my ass! There's just something about good ol' rock-n-roll that allows me to philsophize about being held up in traffic on a gorgeous August afternoon. I had this big grin on my face yesterday as I sat in gridlock for the better part of an hour listening double shots: Rush's 'Free Will' & 'Tom Sawyer', Van Halen's 'Running With the Devil' & 'Panama', Aerosmith's 'Mama Kin' & 'Last Child' and so many more... Damn if it didn't bring me right on back to my formative years in Clinton, MA. Just thought I'd share... Wow! I got a lot of ink in the most recent RF... Thanks much for all the praise -- I am basking in it all! *grin* Lucy: Your dream... where Darren tells you to listen to his records so he can converse with you about them... [cue the chorus of angelic hosts on high] I believe that you have been called... this dream is a portent of your calling for the next year. You are meant to go to your school and force your friends to listen to The Five, and use all of your growing BeFeF conviction to forge new converts to the band. We've all done it... introduced at least one other person to the glory of Ben Folds Five. Yea, and verily we were all as lamps that did not know the resplendence of the phonograph! Markus: Thanks for the explanation of the contraction 'y'all'! You truly are a cunning linguist... Matthew: Ol' Swill... it dudn't get any better'n this. Silk, huh? Hmmmmm... now why does that not surprise me? Actually, I am a big fan of Kheldar and his hijinks... and his eventual comeuppance! As to liking Polgara best... of course I like her best... I *am* Polgara! *smile* As to 'She's Come Undone'... I think you'll enjoy it! I had to keep reminding myself that Wally was a man -- he's that dead-on in his portrayal of women. Finally... so I am 'the voluptuous Annie' hmmm? Y'know, I knew there was a reason I like you best! Jess: Paulsen's Hatchet is great as is almost everything written by (or at least attributed to!) the Bard. My personal favorite of his is The Tempest... Will: There was just something special about your post that made me grin... I think it was your reluctance to take a stand on issues... Ska: Ummmmmm... I've always like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones... probably because I'm from Boston. Skavoovie and the Epitones rock me right down to a nub as well... And I loved No Doubt loooooooong before they became big. Well, maybe not looooooooong before -- but I did start listening to the CD before Just a Girl started getting heavy airtime on MTV. So I guess I'm ska-shallow. I believe that shall be all for this morning... See ya bye! - -Annie P.S. And I forgot to mention another of my favorite series... Speaking of North Carolina (the Cigarette State, as Robbie Fulks put it), as a Greensboro native, I'd be proud to give the Triad portion of the Ben Folds tour at BenCON 98. We could see a couple of venues the boys played in the early days (including the ever-lovin Ziggy's, the best concert venue in NC no matter what the Cats Cradle folks say), Ben's high school (sponsored by R.J. Reynolds, no less)...even the music store where Chuck says Ben used to wow employees with his piano playing as a youngster. And if we don't want to wait for BFF's next tour, I think a Snuzz or Bus Stop show makes a fine excuse for a BenCON...don't you? Books: the best novel I ever read was called "The Day After Tomorrow," written by Allan Folsom. I'm re-reading it now, in preparation for his next book...I won't bore you with plot details, email me if you wanna know more (this sounds like one of those "To Find Out More" segments at the end of educational programming). An absolute thrill ride. But Harper Lee rawks my world as well. And yes, Jess, I'll read the Brock book soon. Must post....must post...must post... Oh man...I hope I can keep this couth...because this is one angry reader... This goes out to Will who blasphemized the institution that is Grant Lee Buffalo. *NOTE: These are just my personal feelings that I feel I should share!!!! Will notes that Copperopolis is easily Grant Lee Buffalo's worst album. I would like to add that nothing could be further from the truth. Jubilee is nothing close to an orgasm and is easily their worst album. Jubilee is repetitive lyrically, way too aggressive thanks to the collaboration of the ex-Tonic bassist, and just lacks the groove supplied by Paul Kimble's production on all the previous work. I would like to add that Grant Lee Phillips has already dumped that bassist, and picked up a new one, who is much, much more talented...though he looks like death. Copperopolis lyrically is quite possibly the best album ever penned save possibly "Five Leaves Left" by Nick Drake. Brilliance, I say, brilliance. I don't see how anyone could think it is their worst album. Sure it doesn't have a single, but in my mind that is a good thing. Now I am not one of those pundits who hates bands that get big, but the lack of a single preserves the album integrity...it allows me listen to the 'album' and not just a collection of songs. There is a big difference. Oh well, I don't expect to win this argument, just don't want Will to be the only influence out there on the millions of young GLB fans via the RF. Blah. BTW, Belle and Sebastian do rule, I was literally the first person to include them in a post to the MA, professing their brilliance to the entire list...my B+S collection is now quite large...I have all the EP's, two live radio concerts..."The Peel Sessions" and the "Radio One Sessions", Tigermilk and of course the newer album. "The Boy with an Arab Strap" comes out September 8th, and I have already pre-ordered my copy from Music Boulevard. I can't wait!!!! Elliott Smith new one arrives next Tuesday, August 25th...precisely the day I get to see my beloved Cubbies in Cincy!!!! My, I've become quite the little topic-setter recently. Didn't quite expect the response to my ska thing, although I am quite sick of all the trashy ska out there, but oh well, as the surprised oil worker says. I had an opportunity today to perform the single most disgusting job ever devised. At work, there are two box makers: a newer, 10-year-old one that's about 40 feet long and must have cost a BITCH to ship from France (where it originated) and an old, probably 40 year old thing that defies description. At any rate, I had to clean the old one. I was given a pile of rags and some very basic instructions. Then it came time to climb into the mouth of the beast. Which I literally did...the box maker for some reason is full of jars of odd chemicals and bellows and strange metal tubes that go to what appear to be medium-sized Coleman lanterns. I guess they power them. To cut myself short, I was bent in half for two hours dusting the thing and by 2:00 I was covered in my own filth. Ecch. Don'tcha just HATE that?:) Big Pun? Oh, I'll give you Big Pun. Big Pun is the single coolest-looking rapper I've ever seen. For the three of you out there who haven't seen him, he is an ugly, pasty-skinned, 400-pound Puerto Rican who really can't do much in the way of movement. He can do the hand jive, basically. And rock back and forth slightly on a motorcycle that looks as it it'll break at any moment. But oh, is he covered with women. And the song, needless to say, is catchy. As for the scrawny little Joe guy, also ugly, who he hangs around with and "crushes" with, let's just say you wonder how they got all those girls in the nightclub in the first place. Fear of Pop info (as best I can tell): It's done, for one. The tentative release date is September 15, although we know how record companies can be. William Shatner has a spoken-word track on it, no word if it's Star Trek Shatner or Rescue 911 Shatner. The album should be cool though. All the Propellerheads comparisons have gotten to me, since, shock of shocks, I really like Propellerheads! Good book: I recommend "Rule of the Bone" by Russell Banks. This book just rawks. I knew Dr. Banks when I lived in Saranac Lake, NY, and this book is just the coolest thing I've ever read. The Jamaica thing is iffy, but the scenes in Upstate NY are all real and you get a good representation of what life is like up here in the woods from it; bikers, poverty, etc. So if you ever want to know about the area I call home but also to read a damned spiffy book, go this route. My all-time favorite. Classic rock: TOM SAWYER!!! Can I just say that early, goofy Rush is awesome sweeping music? Heh. Free Will isn't as good, though, Tom Sawyer definitely has a better rhythm guitar part. Don't even get me started on classic rock...Tom Petty, anyone? Oh yeah... I'm not taking sides on the issue here, it's just weird that Polk is the last guy from the Volunteer state to 'head' the executive branch.
