WTF?!?!?! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 15 Aug 1998 01:02:07 PDT From: "Courtney Knopf" Subject: i'm so cool i rock my own face Oh man, I've really enjoyed myself the past two days. Indigo Swing at Music Millenium was merely a hint of what was to come last night. first off, we spent all day before the show shopping with Josh (the guitarist) for vintage gear. 'twas much fun. it's sort of odd to hang with a member of a swing band and see him in jeans and a t-shirt. of course his jeans *were* pegged, but the curious george t shirt sort of threw me. so yeah, we all went shopping and i found two fabulous dresses. one that i actually wore to the show later. josh got a tie and we talked him into a red jacket. touring with brain setzer rubbed off on him..he's going rockbilly-ish. but the sideburns are cute, so who am i to judge? So later we went to the show (good to be on the guest list when the show is sold out). It was wonderful. they tore teh place up. the dance floor at the Crystal ballroom is amazing. of course i can only east coast swing. i have yet to truly learn how to lindy. but if you're a good lead i can follow. Anyone who doesn't have their first s/t cd...well you're pretty much SOL unless Hepcat (www.hepcat.com/records or 1.800.404.4117) has some extras sitting around that they forgot about. But definitely pick up All Aboard as it kicks much arse. After the show we hung out and let them pack thier stuff up and then we went out to eat. and then drove around expecting to go to Tyler's friend's house (Tyler is the band's road manager or something equally important) but she wasn't there and neither was anyone else so we just started driving around and Josh and Angela (my friend's friend) bust open bottles of cider and it was SOOOOOOO ghetto i had to laugh. but there was a total love *thang* happening between Josh and Angela. i won't be surprised if they come back from seeing them in Seattle and i hear naughty stories about the two of them. OH! and have I mentioned Tower Boy? Well it's sort of a waste because i'm leaving town in 14 days, but he works at the Tower Records right by where i work and hello, he's cute AND knowledgeable about swing and YO, he shows up randomly on my swing list! But he'll be at Brian Setzer on tuesday, so woohoo! and i may get a tattoo there too. i'm mulling over it. Okay, i'm going to shut up and go watch Everyone Says I Love You on Encore right now. ~Courtney The Sultraness of Swing "Is that portentous or merely noteworthy?" ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Aug 1998 11:34:35 -0400 (EDT) From: Eric Patton Subject: Ethnicity: A Point to be Made Anoop, just want you to know that there's someone out there who feels your pain. Y'see, I am one of the very rare Black Geeks in the world. On top of that, I'm a Cool Geek, the rarest of that breed. So finding a place where I fit in is a very difficult situation. For the most part, I hang out with people who like what I do, and they tend to be white. Now, to my white friends, I'm the token black guy. To my black friends, I'm the token sell-out. For the most part, though, I don't even think about my race. It's what I was born, not what I am. I made the decision a long time ago that I wasn't going to let anyone stereotype me into a corral, and that includes people in the "same group" as me. Okay, being serious for that long hurt. ;) Anyway, I'm going to a wedding in mere hours, and ladies, you should see me. I mean, people get paid to look this good, and I'm doing it for free. Anyway, I need to get on my merry way. I love you all. Well, except for the FL, he's a Cubs fan. ;P Hail Eris! Oh well time to get to the point...NO BENTENT! Last night the Beasties/Tribe Called Quest and Money Mark were in town. But not being a big enough Beasties or Tribe fan(it also sold out quick)...I was sad that I couldn't see one of my favs, Money Mark. Until I find out that Money Mark was playing a midnight show with Mix Master Mike from the Invisible Scratch Pickles and the Asian sensation, Kid Koala. So off to the Grog Shop I go! The GS was one of my favorite little venues, but not anymore. They picked up TicketMaster, and are getting all trendy and kewl. They take themselves way too seriously now! Either way, when we got there the show was freaking sold out! Damn advance ticket sales!!!! At this point my two friends and I had two options...we could either leave or find a freaking way in... It became obvious that to get in we had to talk to the man himself, Mark Ramos-Nishita(Money Mark)! That is a tall order. Somehow we managed to catch him as he got off the bus...no one else even knew who he was, but we reckognized him and started talking to him. You know, trying to impress him with all the knowledge we had of his music, then saying oh yeah...can you get a few big fans into the show? He looks us over then goes to see what he can do...flashing a peace sign as he left. After about 20 minutes, with the doors about to open we began to lose hope when out comes Money Mark! "these three and that's it." He let us in early and we get in free 10 minutes before everyone else. For his efforts we bought him a beer. Either way the story continues to be great as the show absolutely rocked!!! Here is the set list... Insects are all around All the People Maybe I'm Dead Pinto's New Car Trumpet(moved to end) Pretty Pain Rock In The Rain Tomorrow Will Be Like Today Cry(by my request and he even dedicated to me!!!!) Hand in Your Head (encore) Maestro Sometimes you gotta make it Alone Great set, great show...enuf said. Just thought I would share my good luck...oh and he did this cool thing which is called 'Trumpet' which involves him blowing up a balloon and sticking it on the end of a trumpet and using the balloon to play...tryit. it was soooo cool. Oh and I got two setlists...no I wasn't being greedy...the first I got was covered in bubblegum and ripped...then when no one was standing around anymore, I spotted another, and got Kid Koala to grab it for me. Rock on. Oh well. Time for me to get an afternoon nap. I work this afternoon. I'm rather excited, as in my family, that is *the* year for females. Maybe it's a universal thing, but I'm looking forward to a long year of irresistibility. My mom went ahead and got my present -- a fantastic olive loveseat (above which will go a more obscure Salvador Dalí print), for which I bought a gorgeous thick soft den-of-pornography zebra-patterned rug. My roommate Joy and I are going to live in a palace built for debauchery and sin. I am a Wednesday's child, full of woe. I finally turned pen to paper again, and it's horrific and grotesque. Why does this seem to be my gift? I can write the inane, the beautiful, the desirous, but it all comes back to one of two things: violent hallucination and sexual despoilment. "Carrie" means little other than being a derivitive of "carole" -- French song. "DeAnne"? "Of Anne," I would guess, although Anne is not my mother's name. "Shanafelt" comes from the German "Schönefeldt" (sp?) meaning "beautiful field". For the curious. So Bentent. I love 'em. ConBENtion '98 part II (The Revenge)? I'm all over that. Hopefully it will fall remotely near Ohio again... We Ohioites should get a van. *That* would be awfully kickin'. We should put a sign on the side reading "First Baptist Church Youth Group" and throw beer cans out the windows. It would be very cool to meet some more of you froods, and to see those from that happy Chicagoan event again... *ahh!* Maybe we can have Erik attempt "Brick" again? I'll bring my guitar and we'll dual. (I'm getting really good at "Dust in the Wind" -- JEALOUS???) For those of you who haven't met Matthew and Anne and Tina, they are a lovely bunch of bedfellows... Keep in touch, guys. I leave for school the 21st, and I will then be regular about posting. More fiber up there! I got the CD for Flagpole Sittah, and the rest is quite strong. two tracks on particular (Private Helicopter and Wooly Muffler) are very much in the same vien as F.S. - there's a really neat song all about the movie Vertigo, and a bunch of other wonderful lyrics. I recommend it. not everything is as peppy as the radio single, but in the long run that's probably a good thing. - -Hannah _________________________________________ http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Cafe/1094/ your Ben Folds Five resource center online since 1997 _________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
