You said it, Beastie boys kick severe ass. Actually, this is going to sound really blasphemous, but I wasn't the biggest fan of some of their older stuff, but this newer album changed all that. Not only do I love the new album, but it's give me a new appreciation for their old stuff. I'm hoping to catch their show in Atlanta on September 2 (if anyone wants to come along, my friends aren't too partial too them). As for cool lines, that whole album is just a bunch of cool lines. I'm glad I'm not the only person who disapproves of Wal-Mart. The super wal-mart they opened in our area shut down two mom-and-pops almost immediately. And I live in a bigger city, I can't imagine what they do to the really little guys. - -----Original Message----- From: Jessica Brandt To: rockford-files@smoe.org Date: Tuesday, August 11, 1998 2:45 AM Subject: I'll stir fry you in my wok >Who else here totally thinks the Beasties are awesome? Light in your head, and dead on your feet Well another crazy day You drink the night away And forget about everything Hey all! Yay! What a great RF I got today! * More tidbits from San! Always a bonus... * A gentle lecture from the FL! Sweet... * Sinforosa news! Boo-ya... * Posts from Courtney and Ginger! HELL-o! What an RF!!! What a jackpot! Basically I'm writing in to say that I'm an idjit! I completely forgot about Hard Rock Live -- not once, but twice. Oh well... can I use my rapidly advancing Alzheimer's as an excuse? I also wanted to congratulate Markus for Sinforosa's third place finish in the BotB in Seattle! That is truly aws, dude... I believe you all might be on your way! Especially since the two top finishers are not exactly in your category... I see good things coming for you! Which reminds me... any news on a ship date for your new CD? I can't wait to hear more! Guess who's coming to dinner? Ben, Darren and Robert! And Anne will be serving her world-famous veggie lasagna (OK... so maybe it ain't world-famous... so how about town-famous? Works for me!). Mmmmmmm... chock full of spinach and artichoke and low-fat ricotta cheese! (And you know the extra ingredient will be love...) *grin* As to tattoos... My bro-in-law and I shall be getting them later on this year, I do believe. I've wanted one ever since my freshman year in college - -- but as tattoo parlors are illegal in Massachusetts (as is oral sex -- go figure) I was never able to convince anyone to go with me to NH or RI. Damn blue laws! But I digress... Anyway... by the time I was old enough to go off and do it by myself -- tattoos were SO popular that I didn't want to be seen as "jumping on the bandwagon". So now I feel like it is time... I just have to decide what I'm gettin' where... I'm leaning toward either the small of the back or the ankle for location... and the design will probably be Celtic. Unless I go with my original plan (from 1988) and get a purple shamrock. This post was filled with uninteresting extraneous information by Inspector #6. Just struck me as odd. If the guys came to my house for dinner, since I don't cook, I'd take them to Abe's, my favorite local coney island. We could eat amongst the group home set. Hell no, you're all WAY too boring & lifeless, & yet still I post about it. Does that have anything to do w/BFF? Hell no...well, it SORTA does, because I did mention how they CONSTANTLY SHUN ME & THE REST OF THE NORTHWEST, right Courtnay?! We're all united in bonds of Benship, but we like to share our other deviations as well. Frankly, I can't imagine posting/reading about BFF every day! I mean, what would this list be w/out Sandi's drunken posts about cuteboy, Eric's joygasmic celebrations of Eris, Annebling/Annealysis, E's Kate updates, Spence's unselfish love of Craiggers & Beth Littleford (she's mine, you bastard!), Carrie's gummy worms, Tina's firemen, Courtnay's swing-a-licious-ness, Matthew's militant protection of the Folds/Fjords, my blatant & shameless self-promotion...?!?!?!?! I don't usually make promises, but I swear on my mother's grave (& she's not even dead yet!) that this CD will truly be something to behold. Anne mentioned the whole being into music, but not being musical personally.... thats exactly how I am. I can't read music, I can't play music, but I love all kinds of music. I rented and watched Dead Poets Society last night, it was just a fantastic movie, I highly recommend it to anyone. Naked Lunch is the next movie for me to watch, and for the uninformed, not a porno but it's based on a classic book by William S. Burroughs. I don't really have much to say besides that. So I will return to lurking. Kathryn, post, post, post and post some more, you have the best posts in my opinion. - --John "I went into the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I though Emaline was done really well, so yeah it should have been there, but on Dwarf the sound was all messy and weird, Brick just sucked... which is a shame because the first take they did of it was really quite good. And I didn't really want to hear Dumped again. If they had cut dumped, they would have been able to fit two other songs in it's place, I thought there were better moments during the concert than what was put onto the airing. If Ben Folds Five came to my house for dinner I'd serve 'em all cheese and crackers, and maybe some scrambled eggs with ham in the middle, well that would be an omelette but that would do. sean ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Aug 1998 15:03:56 -0400 From: "Lyons, Anne" Subject: It's always been wait and see... So... no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't understand some of Elliott smith's lyrics. So I headed off to the International Lyrics Server to check to see if they had the lyrics... and sure 'nuff, they did. Then I clicked on the "buy/listen" link near Smith's name (my curious nature) and I was whisked off to "CD Universe" where I could buy his albums. And then I noticed a nice little feature... CD Universe includes a list of "people who buy artist A also buy artists X, Y, & Z". For instance... people wo buy Elliott Smith also buy Built To Spill. You can guess what's coming... so I searched for BFF and interestingly enough, CD Universe does not sell BFF's albums... but they do have about 5 or 6 singles available, including imports (just in case you care). Finally - -- here's the list of "other artists bought": People who buy Ben Folds Five also tend to buy these artists: They Might Be Giants * Blondie * Boz Scaggs * Nancy Sinatra * Tim McGraw * The Blues Project * Bread * Neneh Cherry * Steve Goodman * Grateful Dead * Joan Jett & The Blackhearts * Steve Miller Band * David Olney * Renaissance * Indigo Girls * Radiohead * Smashing Pumpkins * Herb Alpert * Rory Block * Edwyn Collins * Tanya Donelly Nancy Sinatra and Joan Jett on a list together... hmmmmmmmmmm... Canadian pop scholars, Sloan, have a new album out too on Murderrecords who last time I checked to not distribute to america very widely. So look hard...you may have to special order it, I found my copy at a Best Buy in Cleveland, where Sloan is actually kind of big. They are also coming to town soon...for one of the few stateside dates. Elliott Smith's new album "XO", due out on Dreamworks today, has been pushed back to a August 25th release. Woe is me. Should be great and more upbeat than ever...some see it as a return to Heatmiser form which certainly is not a bad thing. Belle and Sebastian's new album is due in stores on September 7th internationally and September 8th in the US. "The Boy with the Arab Strap" is all new material and will be on Matador Records domestically. That is all the record news that I can scrounge up for now...back to the vaults... Read Don DeLillo's "Great Jones Street" now! It is the best book about a musician I have ever read...well maybe not better than James Baldwin's short story "Sonny's Blues" but damn close. Adieu!
