But I need a new personality, so we'll call it a push. Here's some Ben/RF-tent---for ALL of you. Ben Folds Five. Cool Band. Neato guys. Swell Tunes. That is why you probably joined the MA. The MA *is* the band's official maillist (as far as I am concerned). BUT, to have manageable digests with all the subscribers, Frank needs the posts to remain on-topic. When some of us were members (long time ago), we DID NOT post on topic. This is what led to the RF. If we know something about something, we post to the MA. But for everything else, the RF is a place to hang out and not necessarily post about Ben, Robert or Darren. As most of you can see, it is just fun. Period. Now what I am about to say, please take the right way. Please don't expect to open the RF every day and see Bentent. That is what makes me open the RF every day--the hope of non-bentent every-now-and-then. Break from reality. I, for one, have been sucking in Ben Folds Five since early 1996. So I sincerely apologize if us Fjords don't supply you enough bentent, your daily dose. I have run out. But, along the route of the Ben Folds Five highway, I have met many swell people and most hang out here. So the RF is a way for us old-timers to pass time until the new album and subsequent tour. THEN, the Bentent will flow and flow. But I also extend a welcome mat as large as Texas to all of you to join in, post off-topic (in good taste of course), or whatever. We love to hear about new music, new sexual enhancement drugs, and Markus loves a new friend. So please just remember what the RF is about and you won't be disappointed. Cubs. Rhymes with Duds. I hold out for hope. I close with actual Bentent. Or, rather, a BenThread... If Ben, Robert or Darren came to your house for dinner, what would you serve? Hey, look at me, I'm posting... I'd serve them all fettuccine alfredo, 'cuz it's yummy, and I can make it! Yum yum. I'm not sure if Darren eats chicken, but if he does, I'd throw that in there, too. Hard Rock Live was neat, eh? I dig boys who stand up while playing the drums and make funny faces at the camera. They make me laugh. Yes, Susan Park (who grew up w/Ben & lives in Seattle) was the MC for a battle of the bands (who could all care less, I suppose) on Saturday. We finished 3rd...out of 200, so we're happy. We beat out some pretty well-established local bands (w/only our promotional CD single, into which we put exactly no effort!) to be picked as an alternate for the finals. Then 1 of the top 6 bands canceled when their drummer quit (silly drummer, quitters never win!!!) & we stepped up to fill in. Sure we didn't beat a blues band (a sure crowd-pleasing bet, even in this intellectual part of the land) or a Celtic/Punk/Ska band (which was my personal favorite...except for us!) & didn't get the $500 1st prize, but we did win $100 for only a half-hour set! Now, our CD will only cost us $1900!!! We played another battle last night (Sunday shows SUCK!). There were only about 10 people there, but 7 of 'em were there to see us. Considering the winner of this one was to be selected by audience balloting & assuming our friends all voted for us (those bastards...ya can never tell w/the likes of them!), we should be declared winner of that, too. All in all, a winning Sinforosa (Winforosa?!) weekend & y'all missed it:-(! Oh well, guess you'll hafta wait till we're on the MTV Video Music Awards, selling out 1 of our songs to Puff Daddy & joining him on stage to lip synch to his bastardization of our music! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Aug 1998 12:21:31 EDT From: Sandibrady@aol.com Subject: Barbi's here Yay! Barbi's here! I just wanted to write a quick note to welcome her. And also to welcome little Kate into the world...sorry I'm a bit late Erik. And Barbi, I am living in Kentucky right now (no Tennessee for me), but am moving in less than a month! Yippie! But I'm sure you will still be able to catch me at the Ohio shows...after driving with Calvin to Texas for shows, nothing seems far anymore....not even NC...which, by the way, will no longer be out of the question for shows...Jump Little Children on the 9th, right Ginger??? woo-hoo! That's all for me... Frock on! I haven't really even been all that busy...well i guess I've been working a lot. whatever. I am a bad bad bad NXNW stage manager. the festival starts in a week and a half and my project for today is to call all my bands. i'm the biggest slacker ever. oh well, they gave me a phone card, so maybe i can abuse that. Went and saw Snake Eyes on friday night.....I thought it kicked arse up until about the last 10 minutes where you could tell the ending was tacked on to appease the MPAA. The opening shot though, was amazing. almost a 20 minute take, no cutting at all. Whew! and oh how i love nicolas cage. the man can do no wrong, really. mrrow! saturday i worked...it was shitty. the place was totally dead, BUT a sorta cute guy who works at Tower who I've chatted with before and is WAY knowledgeable about swing (he impressed ME, so yeah) went out of his way to come over and talk to me twice. boo-freaking-yah. too bad i leave in less than 3 weeks. tscha! then saturday night, i think i could have given sandi a run for her money as list lush. a bunch of friends from high school had their annual fiesta and we did a solid seven hours of drinking. i was partying like a rock star ('cept without the heroin and hookers). and lordy me, i did not wake up even a smidge hungover. Bentent? not really. I missed Hard Rock Live on friday because I forgot about it. I got home at 7 after the movie, sat down to watch Seinfeld as usual and after it was over i was flipping channels and saw the last half of SFTD. i smacked myself, but went about my business. it repeats tonight. I'll catch it, yo. So marcus, I may be heading up to seattle to catch Indigo Swing at the Century Ballroom (or whatever it's called) on friday and saturday. If'n i do, i'll give you a call and convince you to spruce yourself up and come out and be a swinger for one night. Sara, great Rufus story! everyone should go see him if they have a chance, and he's going to be on Conan on the 19th! yippee! 10-4 good buddy. ~Courtney The Sultraness of Swing "What is this, Noel Coward with hockey?" ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Aug 1998 15:58:16 -0400 (EDT) From: Ginger Nance Subject: Re: Barbi's here Yeah Sandi! Sandi's *only* news is that she's gone blonde? Oh no... that is not nearly enough information Little Miss Shortcake. Is it still a very short style? IS it just blonde at the tips (a la Jason Priestly) or is it the Full Monty (a la Pamela Anderson [formerly Lee])? [Actually, I guess Pam's 'Full Monty' is something else entirely, isn't it?] But I digress... Besides, Sandi -- I want to know more than just your coif du jour!!! Give me more, Sandi, more!!! As to you Matthew -- you know I love you too... and not just for your quarter dollar vocabulary! Hey... welcome to the Prozac Nation... the Immigration and Naturalization offices are to your right and Customs is to your left. I was crying, man. Sorry for the bum review... And Markus-me-boy... the Bumbleshoot Parade through downtown Seattle sounds like a blast... if I had a million dollars I'd meet you there (right after I bought myself a new green dress). And I really like Harvey Danger... there's just something refreshing about them -- I can't explain it. Guitar players: I don't play guitar and never will. Actually, if you paid me a million dollars and gave me unlimited lessons for a month, I'm pretty sure I still wouldn't be able to play anything more than the opening chords to Smoke on the Water. And that prowess, or lack thereof, would probably extend to any other instrument... sure, I can play Do-A-Deer (Do, Re, Mi) on an out-of-tune piano, and I used to boogie down with the fifth grade band to the strains of "A Merry Bridge"* on my cornet until I quit. But give me a dance floor and some music and I will dance my legs off. But I digress... My point was simply this: am I the only freak who can't play worth a lick (now, now, people -- minds out of the gutter if you please! It can get a bit crowded down here... and some of us are looking at the stars)? Or are there other musically inclined but instrumentally challenged RFers out there? Just a question... OK, here goes... it was another wonderful day at work. 100 degrees out and hotter inside. I operated a 400 degree glue gun for six hours. I feel like death now but I must go and get the 'fro cut off. I'm a bit afraid but since it's nearly school time anyhow, I might as well. Didn't catch Hard Rock Live. I was in a boat getting a nasty sunburn which caused me to get exactly 2 hours of sleep last night (and wake up at 6 for work? Pssha...). I heard it rawked, though, or, according to some people, it sucked. I dunno. If Emaline is the next single things could get interesting. I just realized today that 400,000 teenage girls know the song "Lightning Crashes" by Live but don't know the song "Lakini's Juice". Can you say (pause for nasty, unnecessary cliche) "Brick II"? I can see my sister, top-40 listener that she is, wondering who plays the guitar. She knows Brick, which is kinda scary. Her CD collection is more in the Usher vein. Ah well, enough bricking for this paragraph. I'm going off to buy some interesting shirts. I'm not sure why, but I may end up with a pair of cargo pants and/or a new hair color before the night is over. Work should be fun tomorrow.
