I didi not have a full weeknd of swing dancing. But I shll remedy that next sunday when the Bill Elliot Swing Orch. plays here (Marcus, they're playing in seattle on thursday and friday...GO SEE THEM!). My 4th was boring. I slept late and then ended up going to a BBQ with my dad at his friend's house. too bad we were down wind from the fireworks and couldn't see any of them because a giant cloud of smoke was in our way. and my taste in music was criticized by some annoying 35 year old hippy. i was NOT a happy girl. And i worked yesterday...if you could call it that. I sat in our offices all day and waited for people who had gotten invitations to a screening we were doing and telling them that it was full and they couldn't come. in between the phone activity, i played Free Cell on teh computer and listened to my newly bought London Suede and that dog. CDs. oh it's tough getting paid $8 an hour. And tonight was the Dreamworks screening. It was a rough ROUGH version of the animated (pixar like) movie called Antz with the voices of Woody Allen and Sharon Stone. it was sort of odd because in places where the animation wasn't done, there were just stills of story boarded action. But the stuff that was finished looked really good. And wow...some big studio execs even came. Jeffrey Katzenberg being the biggest of the big....he being the K in Dreamworks SKG. (oooh, yay me..i've been in the same room with 2/3 of SKG. Now i just have to corner david geffen). and Robbie Robertson was there (I guess he must have done some of the music) as was Hans Zimmer (the composer who did the music for the Rock, The Power of One, etc). I was feeling pretty special. saw Armageddon last week. I enjoyed it a lot....Ben was at his Afflecky best and it was pretty funny too. steve buscemi never ceases to crack me up. It was sooooo much better than that piece of crap Deep Impact. I HATED that movie. I came out of it feeling so dirty and manipulated. Kathryn: Why did I not know you lived in the LA area (or at elast i guessed it by your mentiopn of KROQ)? i have a friend from high school called Caroline Yu and i know she has relatives in LA..... you two related? or am i smoking some premium crack? hey everyone! put a lot of pressure on markus and make him come to the Sean Lennon/Rufus wainwright show in Seattle! he says he won'rt because he's a working stiff and has to get up for work the next day. what a pansy;) I'd also like to say that Phase I of my mix tape is done. If you'd like a copy, email me your address and we'll hook it up, yo. Oh! I have a NEW BAND ALERT! if you like powerpop (and I know you do) there's a great band out of LA called Phantom Planet, and they are SO great. They're going to be big. They're signed to Geffen and their album "Phantom Planet Is Missing" will be out on the 28th. And i heard a rumour that Spike Jonze is slated to direct their first video (for those of y'all who don't know....he did the Buddy Holly video for Weezer....and I think he did the Beastie Boys' clip for Sabotage, though I could be wrong on that one). Oh, and I'd like to coment on what good taset in music that john Boyer has....i remember back in the day on the MA (my ass) where he would always mention a lot of good stuff. in fact...i went to elementary school with a john boyer...you ain't from Portland, are ya? Oh, all you Belle and Sebastian fans.... their next album is going to be released on Sept. 7th (the same day as the US release of Gomez's album, yippee!). No name has been chosen yet. And B&S will be touring the UK and the east coast of the US come this fall (no freaking love for the west coast! PISH PISH PISH, I say!!!!). And for those of you who just can't wait for new b&s stuff, Stuart David and his wife Karn have a side project called Looper and they have a 7" coming out on SubPop today. call 1.800.SUBPOP.1 or go to www.subpop.com and order it. it's only $3.75 and it's a limited pressikng (only 2000 copies), and the guy I talked to said they were going FAST. so hustle it and get one. oh, and subpop even pays for postage if you're okay with 4th Class. Speaking of SubPop...does anyone here like (or even herad of) Zumpano? They are so freaking great! If you see one of their albums, i DEFINIETLY suggest getting it. they have 2...Look What the Rookie Did, and Goin' Through Changes. "Rookie" is my fave. I think I'm going to see teh rerelease of Gone with the Wind tomorrow... *sigh* i SO love that movie. though some times i fear i'll end up like scarlett. okay, i am exhausted and it's time for me to sleep. I have found a computer and some time to write. So this issue may be Chock full o'Anne! apologies for everyone in advance... First off... a message. Erik & Tina: I sent you a message a while back, and just got it returned to me this weekend with an unable to deliver notice. So I have sent mail, it just got denied at your end! = ( As to my pillow saga: it was not a love triangle involving my husband and my brother! Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! Blech. No... now pay attention. It was that I removed a pillow from the guest bedroom for my poor little noggin for a trip up to Vermont to visit my brother and his girlfriend. Then I left it in my car for beach relaxing purposes (Ahhhhhhhh! The joys of living near the ocean and not having to work!). Hubby was unhappy that I had not returned the pillow. It had something to do with my "irresponsible nature" or something. So I returned the pillow to its rightful place at the back of the daybed. Then it was time for me to go to a BBQ... so that is why it took me so long to get back to y'all. No big finish to the story -- I apologize! As to what I've been up to... Welp. I did drive up to Vermont to see Matt. And haaaaaad to navigate roads with water flowing over them and whatnot. This weather shore is krazy! At least we had a nice weekend for the 4th, anyway! But Mass had only 4 days in June without a drop of rain. Oof. I just hope July is better! Oh yeah! and I am D-O-N-E done with work! Yeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! I am too psyched for words! (Anne? Wordless? Hardly!) OK, OK, so maybe I am reallyreally psyched, but not quite too psyched for words! Anyway. I'm prepared to take off the rest of the month. *grin* I've been offered one job, but there is sort of another I'm holding out to hear about. I should hear today or tomorrow whether or not I made the cut to the finalists or not. And then i have to make the big decision of whether or not a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Y'see, the job offer I have expires on Thursday. And if I am a finalist for the other job -- I won't hear about the actual job itself for another week or so. So Anne is in a bit of a quandary. But I'm not letting it spoil my time off! *grin* I've already gone golfing more this year than all previous years put together. And later this month I start lessons. And the beach! Ahhh yes... there is always the beach! I hit Rye Beach, NH yesterday -- hey, didja know that New Hampshire has the least amount of coastline of any state bordering an body of water? It's true! See? I realize now that my letter before was just TOO spunky.... I'm really not like that at all.... Yesterday, it was POURING down rain in Jackson Mississippi.. REALLY. And I was going home with my dad, when we see at this intersection this extrememly old man crossing the street. In the rain, for heavensakes. Well, I guess the previous day, all the partygoers had left a flag lying on the side of the road. And not only was it on the GROUND, it was WET. That's doubly bad you Americans. So this old man braved the rush hour traffic in the pouring rain to get this flag that he and his friends had DIED for. It almost made me cry......... And if you can't feel a LITTLE bit of Nationalism from a story of an ancient veteran getting a tattered flag, I feel bad for you.... I'm going to Chicago soon. It might be the week before August, or the second week in August. I have found only a couple concerts, and if anyone could help me, it would be appreciated! Clayton informed me yesterday that SFTD was played on 120 minutes... I stayed up just for a similar occassion. BUT, I turned it off JUST as they began playing it. After some terrible Sean Lennon performance (I know a lot of you like him, but personally, the kid has no talent), I figured hope was lost. The 4th of July in Minneapolis was a beautiful day in the neighborhood (as opposed the 'hood in St. Paul which had 6 murders in 5 days). The fireworks over the Mississippi were good, but a little long. It was kind of like Titanic, I kept thinking "When is this damn boat going to sink? Hurry up already!". I just noticed Courtney's mention of Phantom Planet. May I just say that Sam from Phantom Planet is a really nice guy. He's put up with all my e-mail to him, plus he's a Mongolian Funk fan, so he can't be bad. I'm assuming that Phantom Planet is really good, even though I've never heard them. But they seem to have a very good collective taste of music. I have the Independence Day concert on tape, along with every other performance from Ben Folds Five from the past 20 years. (No kidding, some of it is on Beta?) Including the C-NET interview. Sessions, and everything. Someday when I'm not a Ben Folds Five fan, I'll give it to Sara. (The fox with the lox!! :P) My uncle was entertained by the banter between Bad Idea and For All The Pretty People. I don't know what he thought of the music. In his opinion everything produced after 1979 is crap. Yes, it's true. Even if it is good stuff. Wait, he's a Phil Collins fan, so anything that didn't COME from the 70's is crap. Trivia question!! Now in the UK and most of the world, Monday's are normal release dates for albums. But for the US, Tuesdays are the most common release date. So I would imagine that the cd would not be available here until the 8th. But I could be wrong. ** = The date that I found for "Fear of Pop" is a tentative date. Meaning that this date is not carved in stone and could change. As soon as I hear this date is confirmed and solid, I will let you know. Or you can check out www.icemagazine.com next week. They are usually the first to post and announce release dates. Well, those are just some of the titles I think most of you would be interested in. On a personal note: I have just got done listening to some of the new material that will be on Fleming and John's new release, and I must say you must buy this record. It rawks! I do not know for sure who played on their new album, but I wouldn't be surprised as to see Ben Folds, etc. as a guest performer. Ben played drums and sang background vocals on some of the songs on Fleming and John's debut release "Delusions of Grandeur", which is a very good record if you don't own it. Also, Scott, Ginger, myself, etc. are getting ready to premiere a new website that I think all of you will enjoy. One of the big features of this site is that their will be a live real audio radio show done once a week, where we will play for you Ben Folds Five rarities, interviews, live shows, etc. The site will also feature all the latest BFF news, tour dates, highlights from previous tours, a faq, a visual discography, lyrics, audio archive, picture archive, etc. I will let you know when it is up and running, and you (people on the RF) will be the first to know as to when the radio show will premiere. Well, that is about it. I hope you all are having a good day. Oh! To clear up the confusion from this past weekend about the ABC independence day concert here is the low down. On most ABC stations on the east coast, they did air the concert at 11:30pm [EST]. But not all, showed it then. The reason for that is because local stations have the right to change their schedule and play things later if they want. So in some places the concert did not air until 2:30am. And for a few others, they did not air the concert until Sunday Night/Monday Morning around 1:30am. Anyways, if you did miss it, do not fret. I have checked my local stations listings, and my station will be rebroadcasting the concert this weekend again as well. So check your local listings, you may have another shot to catch the show. Well, have a good day. Talk to you all later. Toodles. Sanders ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Jul 1998 15:43:02 -0400 (EDT) From: Anne Lyons Subject: Finally! Some Bentent from Anne... Hey all! Three on a match is bad luck... but how about three in a digest? Well -- I'm pushing my luck. But this time it's for some Bentent! What do you mean "It's about time!"??!!?! *grin* So here's the story. I told you all before that I roadtripped up to Middlebury, Vermont. vor those familiar with New England... Middlebury is about 45 minutes away from Burlington. Which means it's about 3 and a half hours away from whereI live in Massachusetts. So I had some alone time in the car, to say the least. Well, on my way home on that Sunday -- I decided to do something I had never really done before -- listen to BFF's music library in order start to finish without stopping. Yes, yes... I know it's a bit of a stretch to call three albums a music library... but hey! It's what I'm working with here. While I was listening (and singing and banging the meaty part of my hands on the steering wheel, and bobbing my head, and generally scaring the wildlife in upstate Vermont) -- it came to me. Right there, in brilliant neon lights -- it's The Ben Folds Five Broadway Experience. It's all still a bit jumbled in my head... but as it becomes clearer, I will share my vision with all of you. Right now, I really don't have the dialog ready -- what I do have is some basic story line and the song and dance numbers (some of them, anyway). I will probably submit the dance numbers one at a time... Consider this my contribution to BeFeFanFic! *grin* In the interest of actually being able to post... I am going to oput the opening to the story in the next e-mail... See ya then! - -Anne ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Jul 1998 15:55:57 -0400 (EDT) From: Anne Lyons Subject: The Show. The general story is this: three young people from a small mill town in Massachusetts (replete with small town values and small town minds) graduate with high expectations from a school that expects nothing from them. The show follows them through their trials and tribulations to their (will it be triumphant?) return to their 10th high school reunion. As I said... a lot of the details have yet to be fleshed out... but for now, these characters are: Chris Lear; a witty member of the high school's glee and drama clubs. He is a well-liked and popular member of the senior class, and is expected to follow in his older brothers' footsteps. He'll be working in the local minimum security prison or the local mill before long. But he dreams big dreams... His better half is: Summer Branwen; a young lady of charisma and class. She is the high-spririted president of the drama club who maintains a certain distance from almost all of her classmates -- they are easily disturbed by her candor and passion. Her onlly desire is to get out of Carter, MA. Jack Connolly; the self-described "King Geek of Carter". He loves D&D and SciFi, plays a lot of chess and becomes completely immersed in books. He gets along better with adults and fish than his peers, who call him "Jackie" while cheating off him in chemistry. He is more amused than distressed by their behavior, though... but still feels like there is something missing in his life. Our story begins as the three main characters are about to graduate from high school. The stage is split into two areas: Stage left is a basement tv room -- grungy is the operative word here. Stage right contains a mock-up of a fast food area of a mall. [Lights up on stage right. Summer is sitting at a table with several other teenage girls. The girls chatter and giggle about inane topics at a rapid pace. Summer tries to start several conversations of a more elevated nature, but at the most she gets a blank stare. Lights down on stage right. Lights up on stage left. Chris and a few teen boys sit are bathed in the blue-toned glow of a television set. Eddie Walker sprawls on the couch laconically changing the channels with the clicker. There is no sound other than that issuing from the tv. Chris seems a bit restless. Lights down on stage left. Lights up on stage right. The chatter is getting more and more fast paced and high-pitched...we're getting to the point of bird chittering here. Summer just sits back and looks incredulous. Lights down on stage right. Lights up on stage left. Again... no sound except the regular chirp of the remote control. Chris begins to look incredulous at his buddies. Lights down on stage left. Repeat lights up and down on stage right and left twice more... each time the girls get a bit more like a flock of birds and the boys get to be a bit more like inanimate objects. Lights up on stage right. Summer stands up knocking over her chair-- no one notices. Piano intro...] Summer sings: Do you not hear me anymore I know it's not your thing to care I know it's cool to be so bored Sucks me in when you're aloof It sucks me in, it sucks it works I guess it's cool to be alone Will you never rest Fighting the battle of who could care less Everyday you wake up late Sometimes I wish I was That way [Lights down on stage right. Lights up on stage left. Chris stands on the arm of the couch... one guy turns to glance at him briefly and then turns back to the tv.] Chris sings: And you think Rockford Files is cool But there are some things that you would change if it were up to you So think about your masterpiece Watch the Rockford Files Call to see if Paul can score some weed Do you never rest Fighting the battle of who could care less Unearned unhappiness Well that's all right I guess [Lights down on stage left. Spotlights up on Summer and Chris as they walk downstage. They sing toward the audience:] I've got this great idea Why don't we pitch it to the Franklin fuckin' Mint Fine pewter portraits of General Apathy And Major Boredom singing Whatever and ever amen... [Lights up. No change in atmosphere on either side of the stage. Chris and Summer look at each other, shrug and sing:] Oh well, maybe not, I'll try again Well this should cheer you up for sure See I've got your old ID And you're all dressed up like the Cure You never rest Fighting the battle of who could care less Unearned unhappiness You're my hero I confess ________________________________ Well -- there it is... the opening number of the show.
